That Godzilla set looks incredible! I did have the video playing at 2X in the background, so if I missed something, my apologies.
@shanerollins37363 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Chungking Express, now OOP, was the very first Blu-ray from Criterion. It was right after the format war ended and just as the final HD-DVDs were trickling out of other studios. IIRC Chungking Express was released in December of 2008. Having never owned an actual Blu from Criterion (I bought Videodrome on DVD by mistake and got the DVDs of The Killing/Killer’s Kiss, Dr. Strangelove, and Something Wild from my library that doesn’t have Blu-rays, I wonder if Criterion had some rusty earlier releases like the other studios had.

I found the Arrow Blu Ray of Thief to be better than the Criterion, the grain on the picture I found to be more natural, also the extras easily are better. I’ve also got Blow Out, Videodrome, Dressed To Kill, The Manchurian Candidate, Diaboliques on Arrow Blu Ray. I’ve also got M on Masters of Cinema, I’ve upgraded Don’t Look Now to the Studiocanal 4K, I also have The Red Circle (Le Cercle Rouge) which I too have upgraded to 4K from Studiocanal. I was also lucky enough to purchase the Criterion edition of The Third Man... however the titles I strongly advice you seek out are... Cul De Sac, Tess (Polanski) Notorious, The Man Who Knew Too Much (Hitchcock) Barry Lyndon, The Killing (Kubrick) Le Samourai, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge (Melville) Mind you The Red Circle is already available on 4K Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Rashomon, Ikru (Kurosawa) Shallow Grave, Heaven’s Gate, Mishima, Tootsie, Dead Man, Personal Shopper, The Hit, Safety Last, Some Like It Hot, The American Friend to name a few. As for boxset... strongly recommend The Lone Wolf and Cub boxset. If you love Lady Vengeance... then Lone Wolf ans Cub is very much worth seeking out.

I rented The Thin Blue Line. It is NOT about a cop killing. It’s about a cop’s murder being blamed on the wrong guy (as we now know) by prosecutors. The filmmakers attempt to exonerate him by interviewing the other side AND the person who confesses to ACTUALLY murdering the cop. It recreates the cop’s shooting with the tone of a thriller indicating that the cop’s murder was a shocking event. Aside from that, it hardly touched on the behavior of police officers and was more a nuanced scrutiny of prosecutors’ hastily convicting a man. Virtually irrelevant to the post-2010’s hysteria that cops are consistently driving around killing innocent people. When they do, it tends to be in Democrat controlled areas, 😂

What a great collection. Thanks for posting this. I have a question about "Nashville," which Paramount is going to release in August as part of its Paramount Presents line. The August release will include a new 4K restoration on Blu-ray, which would be an upgrade from Criterion's 2k restoration. I wonder how much difference you think that would make? I trust your insights into the quality of various transfers so I would love to hear your thoughts.

I noticed you didn’t have two great Deborah Kerr films on Criterion, the first is Jack Clayton’s 1961 film “The Innocents” a great ghost story that still gives me chills. Second is Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1947 “Black Narcissus” a beautifully photographed psychological drama about a group of nuns

What would you say is your favourite Criterion release of the ones you own? Not necessarily your favourite movie, just favourite in terms of special features, packaging, restauration etc.
