I love that your turtles don't even know they are in captivity. They're semi-wild pets. The Mata-Mata wanted to be a movie star. That's why he kept letting you find him.

I could never get my feet in that muck. But my daughter loves it and loves turtles. She found a baby aquatic turtle the size of a quarter and kept her and now she is the size of a dinner plate. She has went thru many enclosures as she grew. I have enjoyed watching my daughter baby this turtle named Miss Turtle.

Karen keeping wild animals? Mhhhh I think not.
@alyssastickels13242 жыл бұрын
I’m glad your daughter enjoys her turtle so much. And I’m not trying to be rude, only informative; taking animals from the wild is generally not a good idea. Unless you are a professional or have the correct permits (and even if it is legal to do so), taking the animals can harm the ecosystem. Your single turtle probably didn’t have a huge impact, however when everyone has that mentality the collective harm can be devastating. Plus, chances are you can find a captive bred turtle to keep as a pet. They generally seem to have similar lifespans (if kept properly), they are much less likely to already have issues when you get them (parasites is a big concern), and you actually know how old the animal is. Again, I’m not trying to say you’re a terrible person by any measure, just that there are other, seemingly better, ways to go about encouraging your daughter’s interests. The only time I’d recommend keeping an animal you’ve caught in the wild, is if it’s an invasive species in that area.

Outstanding. Keep up the good work. While I don't like the idea of casual collectors depleting wild stocks I am all for those who go on to study the animals enough to breed them. I really applaud how zoos trust your expertise enough to send them to you and its obvious you are both well studied and experienced. Keep up the good work!

First Snapping turtle I ever caught I was 12yo. It was at a Golf Course in Boulder Canyon in Black Hills SD. I was standing at the edge of the pond and watched him swim/crawl out of the large drain pipe. He was pretty good size, I just reacted. I dove in after him and grabbed him from the back of the shell. Got him to shore and took him to my grandmothers house up the road. She took a pic of him and we released him back into the pond. The next one I caught was walking down a drainage/run off ditch in Sturgis SD. My mother said I was catching reptiles at 5yo. Miss them days, somtimes I think I missed my calling as a Herpetologist

You don't know fear until you step on a buried Alligator Snapper after losing your croc while wading in the shallows of a local river😅😅😰 Speaking from personal experience. I found out what it was after reaching down to see what it was that shifted beneath my foot and pulling up a surprisingly not too terribly upset baby Alligator Snapper which I promptly released back into the water. No bites and no injuries occurred to either either party involved but it was definitely a wake up call that got my adrenaline pumping 😂 It was honestly great getting to see one in the wild even if it was entirely by accident. They truly are amazing turtles.

I herp for common snappers in a ditch behind my house regularly and the only good way to find them is to step on them lmao. He's totally right though, they don't try to 'snap' until you pull them out of the water. They'd rather just dig into the mud and try to escape.

Rescued a male eastern box turtle in the middle of a highway. So, enlisting my daughter's help, we built him a 4'x10' outdoor enclosure out of 2x10's and put it in an existing flower bed, next to our house. We filled it with a cypress/compost mix, and planted a gardenia and hibiscus. Also installed a shallow pool, and a makeshift hide. Seriously, it looks really awesome! That is, until he escaped on day 3, after getting his belly stuffed with nightcrawlers. So, now I have this great enclosure, lol and no 🐢 :(
