My Exclusive Hands-on Preview: Outcast a New Beginning | A stunning Return to Form

Appeal and THQ let me have unlimited hands-on with the Outcast a New Beginning beta code and play and do whatever I wanted. Here are my thoughts so far as an unlimited preview. Unlimited previews are when I work out with a developer or publisher access to a title with no restrictions versus normal previews that may cut off sections or require a ton of agreements on what can and can't be said to get the exclusive. These are usually farther in development when the creators are comfortable with discussing the good and the not-so-good, with the understanding that its early.
Note- Blur is used on any missions with actual data that could spoil a real quest or non-generic mission token.

I've played the original a few years ago. Been genuinely excited once this was announced, then worried when it went silent, especially with all the doom and gloom about Embracer's financial situation. Glad to hear it seems to be doing well, looking forward to your final review. AA games are my favorites, because the devs typically take a lot more creative risks in those- either with the narrative/settings, or with some gameplay systems. Fingers crossed this is one of the success stories.

I actually thought of the first Outcast as very much a AAA game... It was put out by one of the largest companies of the time, Infogrames. It was released at full price and while the graphics were unusual due to the use of voxels for the landscapes and the lowering of available resolutions compared to other newer games it certainly wasn't treated in the magazines of the time when it came out. It was praised for the music, the story and the universe while the system specs were thought of as excessive since a normal gaming PC at the time were only able to play the game at 320x200 and it took a beast to run it at 512x384. The main problem was that the GPU wasn't able to help. So the CPU at the time was the sole way to improve the performance. It was much later upgraded to the 1.1 version making modern resolutions available since modern CPUs were then able to easily accommodate full 1080 resolutions. A thing to keep in mind though is that at the time monitors were CRT which made the resolution a LOT less crucial than it is for modern LCD and OLED based monitors.

Note that one reporter slated it for being lazy and having the "Aliens" speak English... Clearly showing that they hadn't even played the game, where it's explained why they can.

I was 16 when the original game came out. I remember PC gamer had a demo of Outcast, where you could only play the game for 10 minutes. I loved the demo, and bought the retail version as soon as I saw it at the local Electronics Boutique. I loved that game back then, playing it on my Pentium 200 PC. I am 40 now, and I can’t wait to play this, on a more modern PC of course lol.

Ok, so this is one of my absolute favorite games of all time, and I was so sad when they seemingly scrapped the sequel a few years back. Remember playing it in 320X240, but I couldn´t have cared less. Also played "Second Contact" and man did that bring back some memories. Unfortunately most of the jank from the original was still there, which may have turned off potential new players. So glad that this exists :)

the original Outcast was a gem when it came out. It's incredible that we're getting a sequel considering it didn't sell all that well back in the day. I think the Remake of Outcast didn't sell too much either, so I'm baffled , but really happy.

I remember back in 1999 being so angry that my moms pc couldnt play the game good enough :( and never got to experience the full game (only tried the demo) it was talked like it was one of the greatest and epic games of all time back then. Yes, it was crazy hype for it, never seen a game hyped that much beside mario 64, final fantasy 7 and starcraft. I think its time to get the old remake and then get this one as well!

Wow, I haven’t really thought about this game in 24 years since I played thought it one summer, but it was such a funky fun game. Voxels graphics were different, in a fun way, to a lot of the game engines at that time.

Original OUTCAST was my first ever open world games, and is still a stone cold classic to me. This video was the first I'd heard of a remake coming out. So excited.

The first game was way ahead of its time. One of the best games ever made at that point. It's a shame the remake didn't have the budget to really bring it up to modern standards but this sequel looks like a solid effort.

Outcast resides in a very, very special place in my heart, it being one of my favorite games ever. No matter how this turns out, the fact alone that I get to play the sequel that never happened after 25!!! (that's ridiculous to even write down ffs) makes me tremendously happy. May the yods be silent! I can't wait to step into the world of Adelpha again! So glad you covered it as the game needs all the visibility it can get.

For me, what worked with Outcast was the revolutionary voxel engine that displayed that bumpy and almost fluorescent world, the awesome mortar weapons and explosion graphics, and the orchestral soundtrack. Nothing was similar at the time which made Outcast unique, just like the original Unreal stood out from all other mainstream shooters of the time. I suspect this game will not have any of the things that made the original stand out, but I am willing to give it a go for old times sake.

Man I'm so happy to see this... That game was a blast! Unlike many generic games that we love to play but don't hold any memory of it, I still have the scenes and the feeling of wandering in some places of that game printed in my brain. I tried the new remake it was good too, but felt something was missing. It's great that a new, modern version of the game will come up.

Not sure if I remember correctly, but the original in my mind was done with voxel graphics, which meant long draw distances. I remember the kind of peace I would just from walking around due to the way water was represented in game, precisely in the rice farms area. I had never seen anything like that. Maybe it was the combination with the score which used some interesting Persian type music. Will support the team just for keeping this one alive!

I only tried Outcast back in the day for a few hours and just could not get into it. But this game is now in my top 5 of most wanted games for next year. Looks awesome to me, there is just something special about those AA type open world games. They don't usually follow the tried and true formula and tries some new things.

One of my absolute favorite games ever made was the first outcast game!.I remember seeing it in the shelf at the store thinking: That game looks kinda interesting only to be totally hooked on it for a long time.I still have to put on the soundtrack while playing other games just cause the soundtrack is so good! 😍 I really can't say I have waited more for a game in years like I do to this one 😁

Yeah, I don't at all remember anything about this not being seen as a major release from a well known publisher. Their choice of the unusual graphics tech was quite the popular talking point. And while divisive back then, I remember how people talked mostly positively about its versatility and potential. I'm glad they're reviving this IP either way, can't wait to see it with modern tech. The fact it's "Double A" makes it all the more interesting these days.

AA open world games in this space are also typically called "Eurojank" too due to them predominantly coming from European studios and being a bit rough around the edges (Gothic, Elyx, Outland and this all fall into that category)

The original Outcast was so much ahead of its time. It completely blew me away when I played it back then. I admit, it's my nostalgia for the original, that makes me interested in this one, not necessarily how this game looks. But I hope it will be good.

A 3D card wouldn't have helped at all. The game used voxels for most of the graphics and they didn't program in hardware 3D acceleration into the engine due to it being so small a part of the game.
