Everything in this is so relatable and I think this is the least talked about “dys” condition under the ND umbrella compared to dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.

I was undiagnosed as a child, i was teased and i just thought i was dumb. As an i adult i understood i was never dumb. So eventually the disgraphia mended due to weight training my wrist muscles made it easy to hold the pen in a normal technique 😊😊😊

Just recently in my final years of school I have finally found a teacher that believes me when I say I can't write properly, im now finally allowed to use a laptop in class for notes and tests after my prelim test was illegible. Felt so great to hear that it's not just me and this is an actual struggle people have.

Thank you God I found this video cause I was diagnosed with ADHD and Dysgraphia during my childhood and I think I still have it now as an adult even with dysgraphia cause I have a hard time writing and I have the same thing with holding a pencil and I press hard writing that my hand hurts I have a hard time spelling out words especially big words. So this video is helping me that I'm not the only one with this disorder and this can help me through my long run.

I got an autism diagnosis 10 months ago and the Dr mentioned dysgraphia during the assessment interviews. I am doing open university and am struggling to get information from different places and organise it all into an assignment. Note taking is a nightmare and I also have had untidy handwriting all my life and found trying to grip pens and pencils correctly difficult. This was never picked up on as a child, neither was my autism and now at 33 it's causing me a lot of problems. Thanks for this video I'm glad to know there are others out there.

Thank you for covering this topic. I don’t think I ever told my healthcare providers about this. I did mention my difficulty with coordination, catching balls, posture, etc as a child during my assessment, but not this. My middle finger has a permanent, tender bump on the distal knuckle. It’s been there since I was little from applying so much pressure in an odd position. I hear that a lot of people with hypermobile EDS deal with this too.

this helped me out a lot to understand my son. He still little but I've notice he fits the symptoms of dysgraphia. He prefers using markers for everything, probably because of the traction is has on the paper

Thank you, sir! I'm currently writing a paper on dysgraphia. I was young when I got diagnosed but I still have vivid memories of teachers making me rewrite entire assignments during recess because they weren't "neat" enough. Almost done with my first year of college now and finishing with an above average GPA and my first ever paying job! I'm planning on going into the special ed field myself, so this channel is both helpful and inspiring to me. Thank you for this content! We need more people like you in the world! :)

Hello Loren, this was a great video to find. I laughed aloud when you mentioned the squiggly line towards the end of a long word, I've always done that too. I've been looking into disgraphia as I'm trying to learn how to write better now in my 30s, seeing if i can find little ways of writing well instead of just not writing at all. I've been trying new pens lately but I will try dotted paper next. Thank you!

4:52 lmao that is the exact pen I was going to recommend! Another decent one is the LINC Signetta, although it's maybe a bit too light and the ink isn't as satisfying when it touches the paper. But it does dry quicker than Uniball. Uniball still has the best/easiest glide and ink release, though. I also have always hurt my hand while writing, using way too much pressure both on my grip and from tip to paper. It doesn't help that when I write with a pen, I've always gotten more OCD-like tendencies, having to connect any tiny gaps, and if a word shouldn't be there and it's not an erasable pen ink, I would have to scribble out the word entirely and I would get sort of stuck on that (I would try to cross it out with one or two lines but then I'd look back at it after writing another word or two, and I'd draw circular squiggles over the word, eventually drawing a rectangular box around the word and filling in the whole box like it's a selection on a Scantron) and on the look of the letters/ink for much much longer than I should. And I would always create smudges which was frustrating, and always had this big thing of ink on the side of my hand/pinky (which I usually only saw in lefties).

If you ever have a need to handwrite more often you should check out e ink writing tablets, I have the Supernote and they have an a5 size. You can also change the templates so can have the dots in the background or any background that’s helpful. I haven’t been formally diagnosed but am very sure I have dysgraphia and I find with the Supernote the traction on the surface is perfect and the ability to erase and move around my words is so helpful (I struggle with spacing and writing the wrong letters) The writing to text is also pretty good. I have to handwrite often for work and it has been beyond a game changer

I really want to try one! I’ve tried the iPad with a traction screen and it was good. But I bought my own traction screen but those things are so tricky to attach… I failed. I still have my Apple Pencil but it’s a little too smooth.

Intresting! I also have dysgraphia although mine manifests slightly differently. I think it's because I have hypermobile EDS, my fine motor control is all good but I strain my hands since my joints don't work. I rarely write in full grammatically coherent sentences instead just putting down keywords in a string that will jog my memory to what I need. e.g. Hepatocytes are found in the liver becomes HepCyte --> Hep=Liver. If I do write in full sentences I will skip letters or words, and capitalize random letters or write letters backwards or at incorrect scales. I like larger nib sizes (0.7 - 1.0) and using colour groups like red/blue and green/black to sort information on different topics within the same page/book so I can find info easier. No doubt how I notate is more to do w/ autism than anything else though ha. Had years of being told I'm too lazy to write neatly in school, but now I'm an adult I just do what works for my brain and body.

I struggled with school alot my whole life my parents knew I had some learning disabilities they just didn't know which and coupled with difficulties taking in unclear instructions I don't know what they they thought was wrong. My brother in the medical profession gave me some kind of diagnosis 2 months ago,I am 32 now and i am better at describing things verbally than writing them down. You explaining the pencil thing made me tear up as I generally prefer to write in pencil but can't In formal settings.

I taught my dysgraphia son to type on a keyboard. Now he is learning Braille, which also helps him learn a quicker way to type out words than qwerty. His ipad has a screen protector that feels like paper. Also, he is only required to write out his first and last name.

I'm actually not bad at drawing. I love it but it's slow and frustrating. When it comes to writing omg it's a nightmare. I hold a pen in the wrong way and I write even slower when I'm trying the correct way. I'm always last one to finish a test because it's difficult and painful tj write . I can be precise but inly at much lower speed that others

Anybody with dysgraphia struggle with their mind wondering while writing affecting the symbol you end up writing? Like if I need to write 7 but I glance at X suddenly I’m writing X. Or the words for six and 7 start with S so I often write S instead of those on accident. It’s like my brain-physical connection is so easily interrupted

I have a child with dysgraphia and no amount of practice makes it better. And having to work on a big paper size is overwhelming for those who have dysgraphia. It’s a neuro processing problem that makes the process of putting thoughts on paper extremely slow.

This has been very helpful. My daughter and I are homeschooling my two grandsons. the eldest who is 11 has had difficulty with writing since he began school. He often complains about pain in his arm and hand. It has been an ongoing issue. Homeschooling affords the opportunity to try different things, but my daughter and I would really like to understand more, and learn how we can best help. I am wondering if math was a difficult subject for you? My grand son struggles with numbers, and becomes very frustrated.

Kudos on the video, everything you said resonates with me and my dysgraphia. Have you tried "fat" pens? the bigger, larger the pen's body, the easier or less pain I would have with writing with ink pens. Like literally writing with a tube... I like wriitng with makers better due to this... thought I press too hard and the tip eventually becomes too thick... I mostly type these days anyway
