at BP in Edinburgh you get self-service wash with selection of power foam, soap brush and wax so I guess it depends on the station the services it provides

Oh damn, you are really lucky. Here in London self-service is almost non-existent. For me with a black car, hand wash services don't really work nor this garages, they scratch the paint / clear coat.

Lucky for you. Where I live (10 mile radius) there are NONE. Only automated car washes
