This particular lens is so underated, when in actual fact its an excellent two in one, a normal 50mm focal range and also a macro. It could focus as near as 2 inches to your subject is really remarkable! Yes its 105mm sibling may be superior due to additional coatings but this small and nifty 50mm is good to the task. Its affordable and the image quality it renders is top drawer in my opinion

You're all sorts of right. Nikon's current lineup is absolutely the selling point for me. I picked up a z6ii for all-around perfection at its price point for my niche interests and Z glass is some of the nicest I've seen in reviews and quality tests. I would still consider also buying a Z fc for nostalgia and portability. Nikon is really doing many things right. (was also hailed for some of the best nature cameras back when I first showed an interest many years ago and a scout buddy praises his D50)

Haha sounds good. It's a great lens and 50mm has a great balance for focal length. Haven't tried the ES-2 yet. I can imagine that'd be a good nostalgic trip down the memory lane 😃

Thanks mate! Z MC 105 is a beast of a lens. Love the sharpness, VR and the sweet bokeh 😃 But i must say the MC 50 wins in the versatility 🙂

Thanks for your great review. I'm trying to decide between this one and the 105. The size and weight definitely interest me as the 105 is huge. I photograph recipes and finished projects for my blog and I like getting close ups which I achieve currently using a magnification filter with my 35mm. I think having the macro capability will make those cupcake pictures 100% improved over the filter. I love the 105 but it's SO BIG. And I think I could use the 50mm to film my youtube videos as well which would be useful for me as well. The 105 would be a beautiful telephoto but I don't think I have the space where I film to take advantage of the focal length.

I LOVE the Z 105mm, beautiful lens too, and it has VR. And you are totally correct, the size and being very niche are the drawback. In your situation, i think Z MC 50mm works the best. You will benefit from the size, the weight and the versatility. 🙂

Hi Donna, the short answer is 'Yay' and it will produce fantastic sharp result. Although me personally prefer to use 105mm to shoot food, so i don't have to come too close to the food. 105mm have the Vibration Reduction too in case it means something to you. However 105mm is more niche, larger, heavier and more expensive. With 50mm, you have that extra versatility to use it as day to day lens as well. Just like many other photography genres, the key to good food photography also lies in the good lighting technique. Hope it helps :)

Hey that's a good point Jen. Now that you mentioned this, I should've got this covered/mentioned when making this video. Too late now, lol. To be completely honest, I didn't try this in low light environment. However, again .. being honest here, macro lenses are generally a little slower to focus in comparison to other prime lenses. So if you shoot a lot in low lights, you may wanna weight up your priority and choose between good allrounder with macro which is this lens, or faster lenses without macro which is the Z 50mm f1.8. Both are fantastically sharp. Hope it helps! 😃

Lol, at 16 seconds in you hold the lens up to the camera and over half of the lens is blacked out because you think your lighting is cinematic. Buddy if we can't see over half of it there's no point in holding up for us to see. Probably goes a long way in explaining why you only have 1.6k subs and 8k views.
