Thank you, I’d be interested in a comparison between the 105/2.8S and the 85/1.8S. I won’t be replacing my 50/1.8S with the 50 micro but might replace the 85mm. So would be good seeing those side by side.

Great video, as always! I'll be interested in this lens to replace the F-mount 60mm Micro that I currently use (with an FTZ) for copying slides via the ES-2. I'd be interested to know whether the ES-2 mounts to the Z MC 50mm f/2.8 without needing any additional adapters, and whether it can copy a 35mm transparency at 1:1. Many thanks!

When NikonUSA offered this lens for $400 as a refurbished, I got it. The ability to use it with the ES-2 was the key feature for me, but now I'm using it every day on my nature trail walks and I love it. I find a new wildflower every day. I wish my old Z7 would connect to the internet and identify the flowers I'm finding through Google Lens. Wouldn't be great if Nikon adopted Android for their camera OS.

Hello Ricci, I"m very happy that you did this review. I currently have the Nikkor MC 105/2.8 S with your samples and the water droplets, are you spritzing those plants, or is that natural dew? So, would having both just be redundant? Or, is there an advantage to adding the 50mm? I'm on the fence.

I use my 200-500mm on a D500 and rarely on my Z fc. This new lens really is attractive and should draw lots of birder photographers back to Nikon or to upgrade their Nikon to mirrorless. Now we wait on a DX pro mirrorless, more efficient than the z50 or z fc.

I just love the tiny sea life footage you shot with this lens. It offers almost complete self-explanation for its use and quality. I've been drinking in commentary from all corners of the internet about this lens (I photograph retro furniture, where I need to visualize that old, sometimes worn objects have skin, character, and a past), trying to visualize and imagine its differences from Nikons 105 macro (both the Z and the F mount) and third party macro's. I keep coming back to this one. Its silly, inelegantly protruding barrel has been a show stopper for me, but that beautiful sea life footage of yours does reverse what is actually silly.

I'm also curious to see how well it does with portraits, street, and bokeh. It is not an S lens, but it is half the weight, over an in shorter, better than f-mount 50mm's, and it isn't going to be half as bad. ;) I expect it to be a better option than the compact primes. Just don't tell it that I'm going to use it as a street lens too!

yes, good suggestion, and it looks fantastic, if this video is anything to go by, the bokeh on the rock& snail video was like looking through frosted glass, beautiful, subject isolated perfectly and a non annoying out of focus background, be nice to compare ALL the 50's together, see what each apature gives you in terms of BOKEH, iso noise, etc. and compare the macro's too, as the 105 looks like a beauty too :-) BUT I have seen the 105 close up, it is NOT as big as it looks in these comparisons!! ( NOT as big as an S line 70-200 mm, which it looks like)- this is most likely due to the camera angle!!! (sheimflug principle, used in large format cameras; the size is different due to sensor plane angle to subject, like the rear standard tilt in a 5x4 camera, controls image size/shape).

@@RicciTalks I'm seeing a lot of magenta in horizontal high contrast edges. It is wider than correction can handle. Focus engine seems slower than my other Z lenses. While smaller than every other Z prime, it is not compact enough for the IQ over 6' IMO. It also is NOT f2.8 within 6', but it isolates well enough. I don't know if I shoot enough macro to justify the cost of this one. Having previously owned a 50f1.4 for $300 which the 50-S did not replace; for my use. Closeup images from the 24-70F4S are decent, but not macro.

There is no comparison! In my opinion the 50mm 1.8 S is five times the lens this (nikkor 50mm MC 2.8) will ever be. The 50mm 1.8 S is way, way, way sharper, better quality and although it is NOT a macro (if you have to) you can shoot very close with it.

Hi Ricci. As always thanks for the very informative videos. Quick Q on both macros. As you can’t use extenders on the lenses do we assume that you won’t be able to use extension tubes either? Traditionally with closer macro work you’d always manually focus, so how good is the AF at the closer focusing distances and can you in camera focus stack/ bracket with them? Thanks. David.
@RicciTalks
@RicciTalks 3 жыл бұрын
They can use extension tubes as they just move the lens further from the sensor just not a tele converter. I switched between both manual focus and autofocus and found I enjoyed using both the autofocus was very useful even at very close ranges especially with pin point but manual focus is still a great option and you get lots of accuracy too. Both lenses work with in camera focus shift shooting but you would need to be aware of the breathing and compensate for that in post

@@RicciTalks yes, it is hard choice, I went with a 105 f2.8 for my D700 & D610, the Ai-s manual apature ring version, fantastic, use it in preference to the 85 end of the 24-85mm f4-5.6 G zoom any day, esp. for landscape/archatecture, car, train & boats too (detail closeup shots); bokeh gets the win, every time!! and also the extra reach it gives, no need to get out a 70-200 ( if you are NOT a wildlife photographer, that is), that is why I ordered the 105, myself; and it is also a cheaper way of getting telephoto lens focal range, $1,700AUD or so pre-order, compared with $3,500AUD for the 70-200 f2.8 S lens!!- and no need for a tripod or gimble head!!!! I managed to get my hands on the ES2 last year after waiting several weeks on back order. Difficulty maintaining supplies of lenses is perhaps understandable given their complexity and the cost of production but Nikon has done an even worse job of maintaining stocks of accessories and I imagine it’s due in large part on their headquarter’s tight fisted management of costs (avoiding overstocking) and their focus on perhaps more profitable items. But it’s really bad for customer relations and push some to seek other solutions to Nikon’s detriment. I currently use the 60/2.8 AFS mostly for slide duplication and optically it’s perfectly fine but its manual focus leaves much to be desired especially for fine focus adjustment so hopefully this lens is much better,

Hi Ricci love your videos as always. I’m torn between the 105 and 50mm macro lens. Now I have to say I love the idea that the 105 has VR and extra function button and internal focusing ( I dont really care too much about the weight differences). My main concern is that the 50mm may actually be a little sharper although its not an “s” line lens (suprising...just basing it on what i have seen from your videos and the fact that its almost the same as the 50mm 1.8 z lens at f8 - would have loved to see how it compared with that lens at f2.8). My main concern is with regards to speed in auto focusing against the 105mm if you want to use it as a standard lens and also usability in video smoothness or any noise such as the 105 has CR and that may cause some unwanting noise. Please help me out here with the above information and if possible comparing them head to head if you had the time and the lenses. Much appreciated and keep up the excellent and hard work that you do.

I rented the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 a while back. Excellent sharpness, but a disconcerting lag when turning the focus ring until the lens actually moved the optics. This made manual focusing very tedious. Looks really nice and seashelves and snails look big. But I think I am going to keep focused on Z105mm. I see you test focus AF-S which is very fast. It is out of this topic, even if we need it for macro, but I recently purchased a Z 35mm F/1.8 and made "proxi photo" at 40cm-120cm at F/3.2 typ and was very surprised making focus on flowers, ... that the AF-S single point (not pin) beep and becomes green at half press while it was out of focus. AF-C single point OK tracking anything (bee, flower,...); i was using a UV filter Kenko PRO1D (30usd) and results seem better with Hoya HDX (80usd) and better without any filter. Not sure 100%. I am aware at 40cm distance, at 35mm F/3.2 depth of filed is 4cm (much more at 120cm) but no wind and, i don't complain about focus but about the fact that Z6ii thinks it is in focus. sometimes half pressing a second time focus perfectly. to be clear, i don't take photo, i half press. photo is similar result.

I'm glad that Nikon has priced these lenses appropriately. They very well could have made the 50mm macro an $800 lens and the 105mm a $1400 lens, but they didn't, and that's a good thing. I think with the exception of a few lenses (like the 70-200 Z and the 50 1.8 Z) the rest of the lenses are appropriately priced in the system. The 50 1.8 (regular, not the macro lens) I would say is probably an exception because it is one of Nikon's sharpest lenses to date, so in a way, I think it does deserve the $600 price tag because of its image quality. certainly better than the 50 1.8G for $200 (although that lens is a good value regardless for DSLR shooters).

I wish they had made the 40mm compact a Micro AND S lens with two buttons. I'd get that much more use out of it. I'd be fine with a larger diameter lens as they are better for manual focusing. I still think lenses with tiny glass openings are ugly. I'm replacing my 35-S with the 50MC. As good as the 24-70F4S is at f4 35mm, I couldn't justify the 35-S (or any z prime) not offering a size benefit as the f-mounts did (especially the 50f1.4G, one of my favorite Nikon lenses btw!) I'm all about smaller size and close focusing these days. That is why I don't own a fast telephoto zoom (getting by with the 70-300E.) Canon's 70-200f4 looks promising, and I hope Nikon matches it SOON. I'm thinking the 50MC will still be better than the 50f1.4G and compact enough. I had the 105 f-mount and didn't use it as much as I should have.

Yeh the 50mm 2.8 will be better than the 50 1.4 Unless you like shooting at 1.4 obviously

Thank you for posting. All things be equal… to sacrifice 1 stop and $50 to gain macro I will jump for any day…. Assuming that the other apertures are apples vs apples like I think it will likely be.

Is the "Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED " Lens the closest lens from Nikon to this "Nikon Z MC 50mm F2.8" Lens? If so, can you make a video comparing the two please as you did for the Z105 and the F105?

Is that right? Very interesting, I'll have to look into that, it would turn it into a x2 micro lens then? did you get it?

Is that "MADE IN CHINA" on the front of the lens or the lens hood or what? I have no problem that it's made in China, but if it looked like that when I took it out of the box, the first thing I'd do is search the web to see if it was counterfeit. Especially when it says "Nikon" instead of "Nikkor".

MADE IN CHINA emblazoned on the front of the lens is enough to put me off. The fact that it’s made in China would stop me buying it.
