A 24-YEAR-OLD woman is so dedicated to her extreme look that she had her eyeballs tattooed blue and was blinded for three weeks. Amber Luke, from Brisbane, Australia, has gone from 0 to over 200 tattoos in under seven years and has even had her eyeballs tattooed bright blue and tongue split. She was diagnosed with severe clinical depression at just 15 years old. But the model got her first tattoo done at the age of 16 and claims it felt like “a release of negative energy” for her. Since then she hasn’t stopped and has recently started getting body modifications such as a breast augmentation and plans a Brazilian butt lift. Generally people don’t bring this much attention to themselves if they feel unattractive. She appears very comfortable being such an attention getter, with her breast implants barely covered under a bikini top and countless photos of her posing etc. She seems very intelligent and believe me, she knows how beautiful she is! She’s so addicted to attention, power and the self confidence that her extreme beauty plus shocking tattoos bring her that she might be developing a personality disorder. Her beauty and appearance is her number one ‘drug of choice’ and it’s killing her! While she is focusing on her addiction, her self worth is deteriorating. Her beauty may originally have distanced her from intimate non sexual friendships, and perhaps she used tattoos to show that she didn’t care, that she’s tough, artistic, and brave. Hopefully as her tattoos sag, stretch, and fade to green/grey, she will find the strength to cultivate a sense of self esteem with achievements, and form an identity based on something that isn’t just skin deep. That’s just my opinion. I don’t know this woman and don’t mean to pass judgement on her. She reminds me of how I was when I was young, although I wasn’t as beautiful or as tattooed. ❤️

She clearly doesn't have any self esteem now (nor ever did by what she's said), because people who seek this much attention, don't. It is quite common for those with low or no self esteem to behave is such an over the top fashion to garner attention, any attention will do. It's just like the child whose parents ignore them, and they will act out to get someone to pay attention to them, doesn't matter if it's punishment. This is the same thing. She's used tatts and body mods (which are self mutilation) as a form of self abuse to cope with whatever the real issue is. She never liked herself and now, she never will. That is terribly sad and she's a shining example of why mental health systems in Australia and all over the world need to be accessible to everyone. Perhaps we should also have a psych assessment before someone can get body mods and extensive tattoos. This is a sad story and one that parents can share with their kids to show them what can happen if they try to shut themselves off from help. There is no coming back from this.

I totally agree with you Abby. Your sight is your most precious gift, and I don't see why anyone would do something intentional to mess it up, possibly for life. There are colored contact lenses available for anyone who wants to change their eye color. I have several different pairs. They are non prescription. I myself had cataract surgery to restore my sight back in 2004. Two weeks between eyes. I hope you get your second surgery soon, and that it goes well. (Jan Griffiths).

I think people should express themselves however the please. But the issue is that changing yourself easily becomes a completely out of control addiction for many people. Some people are more into body mods, some piercings, tattoos, plastic surgery, etc., & then for some it’s the full spectrum, anything & everything. They like to say “this is how I want to look” to deflect from judgment, but it really needs to be said that in a lot of cases, they simply don’t know how to stop and they don’t can’t find full satisfaction so they have to keep adding & changing things as if their body’s always a work in progress. When it gets to the point that you’re literally damaging your health, it’s probably time to wake up & say “wait a minute, is this really about my external appearance, or am I actually compensating for something lacking on the inside?”

That is the problem in social media, they can influence other people to copy them even their intentions are not. I admire their courage to alter their appearance and even there are negative consequences in the result Sometimes or most often regrets are at the end. For people out there, it is your body and you have all rights to do whatever you want to your body but think 100 times before you alter it. Acceptance is better than regret. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. We will all fade and get old, wrinkles, sags, and age spots will be visible sooner or later. Moderation is ok but anything is too much is dangerous.
