My family’s livestock guardian cross had Lyme as a younger dog. He just turned 13. He moves a bit slower now due to age but still walks 1-3 miles a day. Toby’s got a lot of good years left.

My dog is 7.5. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with Lyme. He had recurring joint pain that would put him down for days at a time. I switched his food to a higher protein, grain free, with added glucosamine chondroitin dog food and it made a world of difference. He hasnt had any pain for over a year now.

I talked to friend who runs cattle years ago and he told me about how much his cattle’s health improved when he brought in dung beetles to his pastures. Most of the big wormers today kill the natural dung beetles that would manage the waste. He stopped worming unless they saw a problem (then he had a plan to use beetle friendly products) and spread beetles across his pastures. His neighboring ranchers freaked out! They claimed his cows would infect his with their worms because they would be so out of control. He told them he would track worm populations through their common vet and go back to the old way if an issue developed. It has been many years and he has never had an issue much less the other local ranchers. Apparently the beetles not only break down the manure piles, but eat the worm eggs and larvae. In the horse industry we use “fly predators” to deal with the fly problem in a similar way. You buy them by the bag and seed them through the manure areas. They proceed to eat a majority of the fly pupae. Obviously none of these methods are 100% and need to be monitored, but definitely worth some research. The fly predators alone would probably be invaluable to your operation. Just google that term and there is tons of info.

Agree with most of the people here. Dogs can live a good, long life with Lyme. You just have to keep an eye on them and make sure you treat them regularly for fleas and ticks.

I took in a Great Pyrenees at 14 years old. Her owners thought she had gone off to die. They came and got her several times but she would hobble over a mile to come back to this home. People told me she needed put down because she had severe dysplasia and arthritis and was in pain. To which I replied; I've been in constant pain for 54 years and nobody has put me down. She lived another two and a half years with me. She was happy, healthy and very loved. I believe that feeling like she was working here helped her a lot. She was an outdoors 24/7 because it wasn't safe for her to be, but since I'm at home all the time, we were outside together a lot. When we were outside together, she took that standard guardian stance of watching everything around the property. Toby may feel the same about being able to work, even if it's just a few chickens and ducks in his pen with him. It's important, no matter the creature, that they feel useful, from human all the way to dogs. Letting him think he's working maybe very important to his recovery. It will help him avoid depression which tends to come with pain issues. One day, her back end just stopped working. Even though she still had that indomitable happy spirit, I knew it was time. My point to you is don't put anything on Toby. Listen to the medical advice, but look to Toby for what needs to be done. If Toby keeps going it's because he wants to keep going. Don't put limits on him that he doesn't necessarily want. I'm not talking about what you're doing for him right now, I'm just saying to allow him to be as much dog as he can be for as long as he can be it. With my physical issues comes mountains of pain. I allow myself to be as much as I can be despite what doctors tell me. I'm 54 years old and I was told at the age of 19 that I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 30. I'm still not in a wheelchair. I have been told a lot of things that I have ignored because I listen to my body. You just need to listen to Toby he will tell you and show you everything that he needs. I'm sorry about the Lyme disease, but don't let it define Toby. I don't allow my many physical issues to define me and that big beautiful Pyrenees that came here certainly did not let her physical issues define her. Brightest blessings to all of you

I hope Toby gets over the illness soon. Just a little food for thought: antibiotics have a major effect on the intestinal flora, in dogs as in humans, and an intact intestinal flora is important for the immune system (and other bodily functions). Maybe it would be a good idea to restore Toby's intestinal flora with probiotics and prebiotics after the end of the antibiotic treatment?
@DonnaFernstrom
@DonnaFernstrom 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, we don't understand a dog's microbiome well enough to give them any probiotics that would help with that. The people who make products for that purpose, or recommend human products, are engaging in unsupported experimentation. They can do as much harm as good. It's best to let the microbiome restore itself naturally until we have better scientific information.
@HighWarlordJC

For sure. The one time I can recall having to take antibiotics every doctor, and even some of the nurses, recommended some sort of probiotics after I had finished the antibiotics.

@bittehiereinfugen7723 2 жыл бұрын
@@HighWarlordJC Anyone who has ever had to take antibiotics knows that this is often followed by several infections. In the meantime, it is even recommended to take pre- and probiotics during antibiotic treatment. Incidentally, this can also help if you are prone to infections anyway or suffer from impure skin. Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir have a very similar effect as they contain many of the "good" strains of bacteria!
@bittehiereinfugen7723
@bittehiereinfugen7723 2 жыл бұрын
@@DonnaFernstrom This may differ from country to country (if only because of the different approval requirements for medicines), but here in our country even my vet recommends it and has a product. As an alternative or as a supplement, he recommended mixing raw sauerkraut with the food for one of my dogs who had to take antibiotics. And then there are the dogs who take care of this themselves by eating feces...

Generally adding clover to a field would be good for more nitrogen. Since you have cattle you need to be careful. There is a type of clover, linked to bleeding calf syndrome. The enzymes in cattle converted some of the plant enzymes to a type of blood thinner. Good to see that Toby's doing better.

I'm no expert, but remember an episode of Yellowstone where a pasture of cattle was sabotaged by an enemy who threw clover over the fence for the bovine to eat, and that killed dozens of their cows! (gives them intense/fatal intestinal gas pressure?) Believe they burned the field later, to rid of the clover.

just got to 8:12 in the video. Two summers ago, my sister and I went to Polyface Farms for a three day intensive. They use cattle and chickens. They have one flock of chickens that are the good layers. Then, when the hens get a little older they are shifted to out with cattle. When the cattle are pulled off a section of pasture, a couple days wait happens before the chickens are moved onto that section. What this does is allow the larvae to hatch. Then, the mobile coop is moved to the section that has the cow pies with lots of yummy treats... the chickens scratch through the cow pies so thoroughly that the cow pies are pretty much dispersed. it's a super elegant system that works very well and completely naturally.

She did doxycycline and took all her medicine. We lost her this July at 13 years old to renal failure. We of course were devastated. She was vibrant right up until the week she got really sick. She passed at home after a week of sq IV fluids 2x a day, she stopped eating and died 7 days after falling ill. We tried to pull her out of it and gave her 24/7 round the clock care and attention. I slept with her, carried her outside, we cooked her steak, chicken, pork chops anything we thought she might eat. We have her comfort meds but to no avail we lost her. I pray Toby does well.

Some of the long term affects of lyme that I saw were corrected by making sure the dog got a heavy duty dose of probiotics during and after the course of antibiotics. Also, keeping them on colloidal silver in their drinking water was a big bonus. Following the cows with the chickens will help, but you have to have them behind them by about three days. Try, instead of fly paper, those barrel shaped net fly traps/barn fly traps. They work really well...and when all the flies are dead, take them to your chooks for extra protein. You can use herbal fly stuff on your cows that won't hurt them or your ecosystem. You'd have to spray them or wipe them down with it

You have faced some amazing challenges with your farm. I was unaware that Lyme disease was as far north as Vermont. Im so sorry about Toby, he is one of my favorite farm animals. Between Lymes disease and the hunting dog character, you have remained positive and honest. Keep up the vloging, and thanks for sharing.

Solution to fly issue? If you mount sparrow boxes around your field, and maybe on your cow-mobile? Fellow in Australia did this, and the sparrows wiped out the flies on a daily basis.

I heard that feeding garlic to cows help with the flies. Another site uses wasps (tiny insects that eat fly larvae). Good luck! Also, I hope Toby gets better soon and has a healthy rest of his life!

It’s good to see Toby doing better. I know how difficult it is when you have any animal you have a close bond with is sick and in pain. Just keep doing what you’re doing and I have faith that Toby will recover completely. Wishing you all the best!

I'm so happy Toby Dog is making wonderful progress recovering from the Lyme disease. The medication regiment has really helped him and that's great. It's to your credit, Morgan, that you were able to catch it in the early stages. I love this video as you incorporated so many different aspects with all of the animals from the LSG dogs, the Barn cats, the geese, ducks, and chickens, and cattle. It was very enjoyable and well balanced. CONGRATULATIONS on this thoughtful overall view. Your skills as a storyteller and videographer keep getting better and better. P.S. All of your videos are terrific stress relievers. You help us non-farm folks to take the time to "stop and smell the roses," or in this case, the manure. Thanx, Morgan, and don't let anyone say you are not a true Vermont farmer because that's exactly what you are!

For the flies, I’d suggest some Homemade fly spray. I used to use it on horses, and it worked really well. A mixture of water, vinegar, peppermint oil, and some other things is all it is. A lot of recipes can be found online! Toby boy’s incredible, I know he’ll be okay ❤️. Best wishes

Seeing Toby wanting to play brings me so much joy... I can't get over shedding tears for a dog I have never touched. Thanks Morgan! For flies, I use muddled mint in water, spray bottle application. I have heard essential oils work well, but as I have mint everywhere I just use what I have.

I’m happy to hear toby is doing better, recently my dog got Lyme disease and we got him right onto the meds, but unfortunately a few days after he was feeling great and he tried to run but he fell and in the process slipped a disc in his back, Lyme disease is a long road as it is and with a slipped disc is even longer. I love seeing that Toby is doing so good for having Lyme disease, hope he’s feeling 100% soon!

I have mixed feelings about ivermectin too but ultimately chose to use it with my dogs. We don't have that much of a mosquito problem and little standing water, but heartworm risk is real and also really devastating to animals.

Ivermectin is what we use to treat our goat’s parasites. It is good medicine, without it the goats would die of anemia from the parasites that get in their gut. Goats are meant to eat brush and greenery so they will get parasites. We monitor them for anemia and it is pretty regular to need treatments every 6 months. It’s a balancing act.

Hey Morgan! I recommend netting out some titaniam grid patterned metal for the SHADE MOBILE. Itll make the top a lot more light weight and possibly wider in area too. Also, for flies, they make flytraps you can hang around your farm and they work super well! Think hornet trap but no harmful chemicals!
