Bacall S Language is difficult to acquire after a certain age. And add to that, a language takes years to perfect. Theyd need a lot of time and dedication, alternatively, youd need to actually attend classes to learn ASL. That in it of itself can take years to even master the basics. So the reality is, that with working/busy parents it becomes exceedingly difficult. Its not as cut and dry.

Both my parents were born deaf, I ended up working as an interpreter in the deaf community and for deaf and hearing impaired kids in a public school. I too have some funny stories about my experiences with the deaf. But seriously, it truly is a shame no one in the family took the time or initiative to learn how to talk to a family member, so they would be able to convey their needs, wants and desires. I had students where no one in the family could sign and it hurt my heart for the deaf student. They can't conform to your hearing world, so it's up to family members to to learn to sign.
@loveheals61843 жыл бұрын
That's amazing that your empathy led you to help in school. May you be received with love, respect and support wherever you go. I recognize that the experience of a CODA can have its own traumatic aspects. I've forgotten his name, but there was a man whose memoir was about two deaf parents who followed the societal custom of having him in another room as a toddler. Problem is his cries went unattended because they couldn't hear him.

My first experience to deaf culture happened my first year of college. Everyone on my side of the dormitory heard this screaming and banging like someone was getting murdered. The resident advisor and he thought the same thing, so campus security was called. When the campus police showed up they openned the door and these two were having the loudest, most aggressive sex imaginable. That dude moved to the deaf dormitory later in the semester. I had go to the deaf dormitory on a few occasions and it is government bureaucracy at its finest. Because only the deaf dormitory would have a talking elevator.

It's so sad when no one in the family bothers to learn sign language. As an interpreter I see it so often, and it causes a lot of pain and strife between Deaf adults and their families. At least TRY!! Meet 'em half way. 🙏🏽 Talking to each other is how we connect, how we learn things about each other and the world. Deaf kids miss so much!

I think basics are definitely necessary. Proficiency might be a challenge but I am reminded of inmates during Wars who used a 25 letter alphabet on a 5x5 Grid to tap out messages , one letter at a time. Just to stay in touch.

I had deaf friend's growing up and in grammar school, I made a point to learn sign language and even took ASL later on in school as elective credits. Some of the most laid back, groovy like a drive thru movie kind of people I've ever met and have had the pleasure of knowing, are deaf... And some are nothing but jokes on jokes on jokes, all day every day, cutting up and spreading the laughter vibrations.... If I was deaf, all I'd want to hear is happiness too (and by hear, I mean, see). One of my favorite teachers was my ASL teacher, she was like the first progressive, accepting/nurturing and all around bee's knees person I met. Most teacher's, in their own right, are some kind of hero and those who teach someone how to be bilingual, or to speak multiple languages, are worldly heroes, especially those who bridge a gap, like interpreters.

teletype for the deaf or TTD, it's a type of phone that deaf people can use it's difficult to explain this tech if you're not old enough to remember landlines, but the short version is that basically a deaf person could have a text conversation with an operator, and the operator would relay the message to the hearing individual. The TTD machines are expensive compared to a regular phone so most phones didn't have the functionality, which is why the operator would be involved.

Sad thing is that many hearing people don't learn sign language when there is a deaf person in the family
@kodaspaws4 жыл бұрын
Thx for saying that. It’s terribly tru. I learned ASL just incase, at the time I didnt know any deaf ppl. When I found out how many ppl have a deaf person in their family that don’t sign - I actually got mad. That’s fukt. How are y’all so lazy that you wouldn’t want to talk to your own relative. Seriously?

@@kodaspaws my parents are deaf. On my dad's side his siblings know the alphabet only. On my mom's side though not a single one of her siblings, parents, cousins or nieces/nephews know how to sign

Jimmie James You’re annoyed at them for not learning your language when you could have put in the smallest amount of effort to learn how to order your regular order in their language too. Nobody has to conform to anybody, if you’re in the US, we don’t even have an official language.

I guess they don't love them enough to learn. Same with my family on my diabetes, if I got unconscious, no one would know what to do

kodaspaws I can’t really blame some people, especially adults, learning languages is hard even when you don’t have responsibilities to take care of.
@kodaspaws4 жыл бұрын
@@risharddaniels1762 That is the most self centre response. Don't have the time ? Its your family. Your kid. You don't want to talk to your kid ? Its your kid. You've got time for football, and dinner out with friend - prioritize. I spent about a $800 bucks to learn the very basics of ASL in a structured class one night a week, for 1.5 years. I don't know a single person who is deaf. I did it just incase. Just incase I need to help someone. And you're trying to tell me 'learning is hard' ? It takes too much time ? I'm ADHD asf, w/ dyslexia - and I learned a language that I almost never have to use. Just to be a better community member, and families won't get off their lazy asses to learn a new language ( which is easy btw ) for their own kids ????????? Come on.
@risharddaniels17624 жыл бұрын
kodaspaws I don’t have $800 to spend learning asl and i don’t even have a deaf person in my family. I’m only 18 and i’m learning languages right now and it’s not just something you achieve overnight. Good for you that you were capable of learning asl but not everyone’s brains are capable of learning multiple languages especially like asl. It’s cool and all that you decided to learn asl to be a helpful person but you can’t judge a person who might not.
