#17 for me is Billy Cobham. One of the double bass drum pioneers, Billy combined the subtleties of Jazz drumming with the power of Rock. Billy played on Miles Davis' album: Bitches Brew as well as with guitarist John McLaughlin in the Mahavishnu Orchestra “Searching for the Right Door” on his album: Spectrum.

Number 17 is Clive Burr. Famously of those classic early Iron Maiden albums. Three albums with Maiden and three utter classics. He'd briefly played with Samson before joining Maiden and after leaving, joined French band Trust. A bit of a 'huh' moment as Maiden had recruited former Trust drummer Nicko McBrain to replace him. The last time I saw Clive live was the only gig ever performed by Desperado, Dee Snider's post Twisted Sister band in 1988. They played a secret gig at Edwards No 8, a rock club in Birmingham, UK. They were in the middle of recording the album (even though it officially didn't see the light of day until 1996). A very good band that for some reason, just never went any further. Seeing Clive, along with Dee, guitarist Bernie Tormé and bassist Marc Russell on a small stage in a sweaty club was an exceptional event. Sadly, MS cut his life and career short, but he will always be remembered for his amazing playing on the self titled Maiden debut, Killers and the iconic Number Of The Beast. Great topic for next month.

In no particular order, my pick of the day is the great, Ian Paice of Deep Purple. I'm not a drummer, so I'm not going to attempt to get technical, but some guys I enjoy more than others. Ian has such a great drum sound, great "thump," like you're getting popped in the chest or something! Love it. A couple of my favorite tracks are Burn and Hard Lovin' Man. Double stars indicate one of my very favorite drummers. 17. Ian Paice** - Deep Purple (Burn / Hard Lovin' Man) 18. Brian Downey - Thin Lizzy (Fighting My Way Back / Bad Reputation) 19. Charlie Benante - Anthrax (Be All, End All / In My World) 20. Anton Fig** - Ace Frehley Band / David Letterman Show 21. Uli Kusch - Helloween/Masterplan (Falling Higher / Steel Tormentor) 22. Albert Bouchard - Blue Oyster Cult (Cagey Cretins / Subhuman) 23. B.J. Zampa - House of Lords (currently with Dokken) (These Are the Times / Come to My Kingdom) 24. Keith Moon - The Who (The Real Me ; Baba O'Riley) 25. Bun E. Carlos - Cheap Trick (You're All Talk / Southern Girls) 26. Robert Sweet - Stryper (The Way / Caught in the Middle 27. Stewart Copeland I had Synchronicity on cassette when I was a kid and the music sounded mystical to me. As a teenager, trying to play along to Murder By Numbers on drums felt so counterintuitive and difficult. His ride cymbal work and reggae style beats were amazing. But for me, he has one of the most incredible left hands in the drumming world. His windup to hit the snare was like no one else, and he seemed like he had more power and flair than any other rock/metal drummer at the time.

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Fine selection today and can remember him with Black Oak Arkansas. Personal pick today? Again, these will not be in any order and may not know enough for album and song selections, but drummers that have been memorable to me. Today, a less and steady is more selection - Mr. Charlie Watts best known for his work with the Rolling Stones. His presence and then absence from the Stones' most recent studio album was noticeable and he will be missed. His was the heartbeat that moved the band and he seemed satisfied to be more in the back than out front. Some favorite albums? Let's go with Let It Bleed and Tattoo You but plenty more. Some favorite tracks? Sympathy For The Devil, Gimme Shelter, Honky Tonk Women. Thanks, Pete. December sounds interesting for story telling though I may be repeating prior comments. Looking forward to that and also looking forward your next drummer choice.

Hello everyone, hope we're all keeping well. I realised after making my list that it was rather light on prog drummers, and had to admit that, although it's a genre full of names I'd have to consider on a rundown of the worlds greatest or most important/influential skinbeaters - Collins, Palmer, White, Bradford etc - but, as always, these topics are for our favourites, and today my list of favourites and the world of prog finally collide... IAN MOSLEY of MARILLION He joined for the band's sophomore outing, "Fugazi" and has remained there ever since, providing an understated grace to the band's sound, subtle when needed, but capable of some serious power when necessary. A few years ago, had I picked him for a similar exercise, my 3 picks would all have had a very FISHy look about them, but the Hogarth era material, while patchy, is certainly growing on me and, so, my albums are now as follows... • Fugazi (1984) • Brave (1994) • An Hour Before It's Dark (2022) And, for a highlighted track, plenty to choose from, but I'll go with: • "Incommunicado" from Clutching At Straws

I've never heard anything from "Straws," but looking forward to fixing that soon (my fellow work mate Harry says you've got extremely good taste, "Brave" is his favorite). Glad you've got the car back on the road. Hope you had a magnificent Thursday.

Tony Allen Mainly known for his time with Fela Kuti where he was not only drummer but musical director. Soul, jazz, funk, afrobeat. A polyrhythmic wonder. He was drumming until his death 4 years ago and I'm here to say his last releases were very good. But his time with Kuti in Africa '70 was often outtasight.

For day #14, my pick goes to 17. CHRIS SLADE, ex- Manfred Mann's Earth Band Chris' musical activities started in the mid to late 60s, when he was recording and touring with Tom Jones. Manfred Mann asked him in 1972 to join his band project "Earth Band". Chris played on their first 8 albums, then decided to leave at the end of the decade. Some stand-out tracks from this time period are "Spirits In The Night", "Blinded By The Light", "Davy's On The Road Again" and Chris' own composition "Drawning On Dry Land". In 1980, Chris joined Uriah Heep for the album "Conquest" and for their following tour. Their line-up disbanded the year after. Later on, Chris joined Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers for the super group project "The Firm". He also supported solo activities from David Gilmour, and was briefly part of Gary Moore's band. Later on, in the 90s, as well as after 2000, he helped out AC/DC during the times when their drummer Phil Rudd was not available, due to different reasons. Pick number 17, Milić Vukašinović, drummer in bands Čičci, around a year in Indexi, also around a year in Bijelo dugme, the largest Yugoslav rock band. Later on he formed Vatreni poljubac, power trio playing hard rock with folk touches but that time he took a role of guitar player and singer (not very good at it). I suggest an album by Bijelo dugme - Eto! Baš hoću!, band’s third album released end of 1976, the only one Milić played drums on. Balads are the best songs on the album, Loše vino (Bad wine) and Sanjao sam noćas da te nemam (Last night I dreamed that I didn’t have you)

Pete, I was preparing for the traditional favorite new releases of the year for December. Will we do our 2024 favs in January? Or will we do our traditional 50th Anniversary albums then? If we are not going to do 2024 new releases at all, I can pepper them in as a bonus after my album story next month.

Yeah, got me wondering too. I'm hoping 2024 faves in Jan then starting in Feb the anniversaries. And if no 2024 then I'm stealing your idea and throw 'em in after my album stories. Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is JEFF PORCARO. drummer for Toto and prolific session musician. Albums (that I bought): Eric Carmen - Boats Against The Current (1977). Jeff shared drum duties with Nigel Olsson from Elton John's band. Toto - Hydra (1979). Probably the band's proggiest album, and Jeff shines on the title track. Toto - Isolation (1984). My favourite Toto album - a real 80s rock flavour here. Showcase track: Jake To The Bone. A stunning jazz fusion instrumental, which is really a showcase for everyone. From Jeff's final album with the band, Kingdom Of Desire, before his tragically early death at 38.

My #17 pick is an English musician who has been the drummer of the hard rock band Def Leppard since 1978. He overcame the amputation of his left arm in January 1985 and continued to play with the band, which went on to its most commercially successful phase. He is known as "The Thunder God" by fans.[1][2] He is ranked No. 7 on the UK website Gigwise in The Greatest Drummers of All Time list. I'm talking about Rick Allen as I call him the one-handed drummer. On the afternoon of 31 December 1984, Allen was involved in a car crash with his then-girlfriend, Miriam Barendsen, on the A57 road in the countryside a few miles west of Sheffield.[8][9] A car in front of theirs deliberately slowed for him to catch up, only to speed up as he tried to pass. This went on for several miles until, in frustration, he accelerated to finally pass, at which point he lost control of the left-hand-drive Corvette C4, which hit a dry stone wall and entered a field. His left arm was entangled in the seat belt and severed, remaining in the car while he was flung out.[10] Doctors initially re-attached it, but it was later amputated due to an infection.[11][12] Initially Allen felt '"defeated" but, buoyed by "family, friends and hundreds of thousands of letters from all over the planet",[10] he decided to continue playing drums with Def Leppard, and adopted a specially designed electronic drum kit.[13] The band took a hiatus from onstage performances until 5 August 1986,[14] (Rick Allen's first live performance since losing his left arm)[15] instead doing a small run of public rehearsal shows in Ireland in advance of their 16 August 1986 Monsters of Rock festival performance at Castle Donington.[16] He has since re-adopted partially acoustic drum kits depending on the setting. Allen has used custom-manufactured cable routing by Whirlwind. He uses four electronic pedals for his left foot to play the pieces he used to play with his left arm, which from left to right trigger sounds of a closing hi-hat, bass drum, snare drum, and a tom drum.[18] In 2009, Yamaha announced the addition of Allen to their artist roster. He plays Yamaha Oak Custom drums with a matching subkick.[17] He also uses Remo drumheads (usually he has coated Ambassadors on his drums and a clear Powerstroke 3 on his bass drum), Zildjian cymbals (mostly K customs, Z Customs and A customs), an Ahead drumstick and an LP rock cowbell.[19] He previously used Ludwig Drums, Paiste 2002, RUDE, and Sound Creation cymbals. Albums- Hysteria Pyromania and High N' Dry Song- Rock of Ages and Photograph( yes I picked two because I didn't know what to choose by him. So I went with a Mulligan today either or is a great song.)
