Great list! Love seeing people post Joe Byrd stuff. I work at a natural foods Co Op in Humboldt County. Joseph Byrd is a regular customer. I found his USA album back in the late 80's at Ear Candy in Van Nuys. Thirty years later, I'm friends with guy. Life is strange. Joseph always seems genuinely pleased and surprised when I tell him he still has fans. Hell, he probably has more now than he did back then!

Hi Richie, I was waiting for this one. Great stack of psych here, enjoyed em all. I am going to do a list myself. Been reading the comments to this and as always people don't read the title. "My" favorite 60''s psych albums! Nowhere on that title does it say "Your" favorite 60's psych albums! LOL, and in reality, it would be so hard to narrow them down to precision. My list will be my favorites also, the psych albums I always go back to for psych enjoyment. Thanks Richie!

Hey Rich, Enjoyable psych faves there along with your outside insect ambiance. I never see any Donovan, yes underrated. Jug blowing in front mix?? Nice Tomorrow and Pretty Things. I'm with you on stereo psych preference. Superb Floyd pick. Great Hendrix including cover art. Great Beatles choice. I like about 5 of their albums equally, but for sheer psych focus it's 'Magical...' and 'Sgt. Peppers' minus a few songs that I don't care for. Thanks for sharing. ~Jeff

Thanks for watching. That 13th Floor Elevators doesn't just have jug blowing but amplified jug blowing. I'm glad you liked the video. I frequently watch your older videos. The last one I watched was your Pink Floyd vinyl collection.

The mere thought of amplified jug blowing makes me cringe. I can tolerate coffee percolators or Jews harp but amplified jug? I love psych but don't own too much though my want list is huge. I enjoy your videos and commentary as well and plan revisits. Again, cool stuff for me to look into as some of it is new to me.

Great video Rich and some fine choices. Good to see Spirit's first album make the list. The summary of the jug content of each Elevators song made me chuckle. United States of America is right up there for me as well - Cloud Song is my stand out track. A bold and refreshing number one album - MMT has so many great tracks and the LP is hardly ever mentioned in the UK. Going to get the Peanut Butter Conspiracy and Tea Company albums one day... Cheers.

Hey Ritchie! The title made me click instantly and I am not disappointed :) What an intriguing selection - some I know and really love (Kaleidoscope, Crown Of Creation - that's easily one of my top 3 records ever, Pearls Before Swine, Chocolate Watch Band, 13th Floor Elevator! Wooohoo! Haha my husband had the same sentiments about the record, I loved it from the start but he was annoyed by the noise first as well, The Dead, Pink Floyd, Jimi) some I always wanted to check out (Spirit, Tomorrow, JK&Co, The United States Of America, The West Coast Pop Art.. and I actually haven't heard the whole Beatles album, but know the Strawberry Fields... and Walrus songs of course) and some I am not familiar with (Harumi,) and one I am hunting for for so so long - The Tea Company! So hard to get here, never see it pop up in the wild. That is a quite unstructed comment, sorry. Just have fallen out of bei after a long night :) but now the ones I want to check out are definitely added even more to the wantlist. Thanks for sharing. Much love, Diana

I think there were at least for bands with that name. I seem to recall there being one in S. America. I also agree that the "love jug" ruins most of their songs. Roky used to live about 5 miles away from me. One day, about 15 years ago, his brother, who was a local concert violinist, decided to move him to Texas with him.

Hi Richie, well I was drawn to the '60s Psych' title like a moth to a flame. I love Psych stuff but don't have a great deal, so about 2/3 of your selection was new to me, which is good. I've never heard of that Donovan album for a start, and thanks for clearing up the Kaleidoscope conundrum as I didn't know there were three bands going by that name - let's face it, it's an obvious choice for a psych band. The Traffic and Jefferson Airplane picks are particular favourites and what I've heard of The United States Of America album and West Coast Pop Art, they sound right up my tree. It's good the way you've titled your videos - makes it easier to pick out ones to watch - and you clearly have an eclectic taste - and a neat turn of phrase; "..elephants at the door" :) Cheers for now, Ian

There are some psych classics on there, but Paul's vaudevillian style of writing sometimes makes me think he fought the change in sound direction of the band for a lot longer. It took him too long to embrace the tune in, turn on, and drop out sound that was happening around him. Great choices on your list (saw quite a few I need to pick up). Axis is my favorite Jimi album. Usually listen to that about 3-4 times a month. Classic record.

Vinyl Richie I agree. All three are amazing, but Axis sounds like the most complete work of the three. All of the Alan Douglas produced albums are crap as far as using session musicians and bad production goes. I do like the new releases with Kramer back in the board though. As a Hendrix fanatic though, I buy it all because I'm a sucker for anything from him.

Eleanor Rigby might not seem like a psych song, but watch the sequence that features it during the Yellow Submarine movie. It's the most mind-bending set of visuals you can imagine, but the song doesn't seem incongruous.

Good list. A lot of artists I haven't heard of. I'd go for Anthem of the Sun or Axis: Bold as Love as my favourites from the list. Donovan is interesting: even in the 80s he still seemed popular (his 60s music I mean) but he seems to have been lost along the way. Suprised to see the Beatles there. As for Harumi, I'm keen to check him(?) out and not that it really matters too much, unless you come to Japan, but it's ha ru mi : 3 syllables, short vowel sounds, said flat with no accent and quickly and not ha ROO me : ) Btw, my Japanese sucks but you can trust me with the pronunciation.

Interesting video. I'm not big on psych generally...mainly because I can never find or afford the records. I like the Chocolate Watch Band. Very cool version of SF Sorrow; I have a reissue of that. It really reminded me of the Beatles' 67. Some of the most psychedelic music I know is purely electronic.The album Abduction by Eat Static comes to mind. I used to trip my nuts off to that. Nice picks though, I'll check 'em out.

Good job. Yeah, the Spirit album is strong. Mag Mystery is really good and Paul and his wanker songs always bother me too. I guess I don't know many of the psychs but I know the Nuggets Original Artyfacts albums. The Dovers were a folky psych band and the one album listened to - which might have been a collection of singles - really was great. Imagine if Hendrix and Lennon got together for "Revolver Haze"

Dude, you don't have the July record? Shit, that's a surprise. That is a fantastic Donovan record, and one that doesn't get a lot of attention. Didn't realize Kaleidoscope was Puerto Rican, I always thought they were Mexican too. That original PB Swine record is a great piece, even though I'm not much of a fan myself. I kinda love that jug on the first Elevators... it's mixed "better" on the second one for sure, but there's something so ineptly endearing about that sound on the first one. Man, there's so much good shit here, I could write a paragraph about every one... except JK & Co. and believe it or not, that Grateful Dead record, neither of which I've heard. And you know, I've always liked the US versions of the Beatles albums more than the UK ones, precisely because they're shorter. I have the UK version of Revolver, and the extra songs feel shoehorned in.
@vinylrichie007
@vinylrichie007 7 жыл бұрын
The only Pearls Before Swine that I like is their first. The July had a RSD release a few years back and a local store has copy that I most likely will get. With Revolver I think they removed the wrong songs. They should have axed the Paul songs instead of the John songs.

Nice list. Glad to see Mr. Fantasy getting some respect. I think Bless It's Pointed Little Head is Airplane's best mind music. Mostly agree with your comments on the electric jug on that Elevators album. I actually like its effect but it becomes a little too much of a good thing after a while imo. Agree 100% on the McCartney comments. Brilliant artist but sometimes a little sparse on substance. What's your impression of the Moody's In Search of the Lost Chord?
@Hippiekinkster
@Hippiekinkster 3 жыл бұрын
If I had to pick one JA album, "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" would be the one I'd go for... "In Search of the Lost Chord" is also on my list. I listened to that on my first (and only) mescaline trip. That trip was my first time for "Happy Trails" by Quicksilver Messenger Service (I know people get all orgasmic over Cipollina's playing, but, in my personal opinion, Gary Duncan was the engine that drove the band. Most people hate Chester's vocals, too, but I'm not one of them. the December 27? 1975 show at Winterland was superb.) It's a Beautiful Day's eponymous LP was also a first that night, and it is, for me, a top five tripping LP. I saw them both around '73-'74, and they were both great shows, but I have to give the edge to IABD. I saw them in Richmond VA at the Mosque, an old-style Arabesque ornate theater at the edge of the Fan District (kind of a mini Haight-Ashbury). About ten or so of us freaks got in for free because Byrd, the head of the VA Commonwealth U. Concert Committee, lived in our brownstone on Grove Ave. The band did two sets of about an hour each (time is funny when you're stoned); Patti Santos, in black fishnets, fuck-me pumps, mini miniskirt... was, uh, mesmerizing. Lights came up, and people shuffled out, except about 40 or 50 of us stayed in our seats... "Nope, we are NOT leaving, this show is NOT over!" After 15 or 20 minutes, the lights went down, the band came out, got their gear ready, and David LaFlamme said, "Now we know who our friends are," and they proceeded to tear it up for another two hours more or less. Bit of trivia: the girl on the cover of IABD's first LP is in the background of Quicksilver's "Happy Trails". BTW, somebody uploaded a Japanese pressing of "Happy Trails". Killer sound.

Good list. I think your Mother Should Know is kinda psych or at least odd enough and is a gap to pause for the rest of the songs. But yeah, I like that album. Check out the newest DVD, The Beatles: Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years. It's a great look back and the crazy Beatlemania years, with updated sound and video. Some of those albums I haven't heard. One that I would have included would have been the Mother's Freak Out. Some say it's not psych, but everyone has their own opinions about what is, and what isn't.

I have yet to find out why people think Spirit was a psych band. They didn't start delving into psych until at least Dr. Sardonicus, and even that was only 2 or 3 tracks. From Feedback onwards, they had MUCH more psych! "California psych sound" = fuzzy guitars and odd lyrics. Traffic, do you have the mono or stereo version. There were 4 different pressings, two here and two in England, each one was different. I'm okay with the Love Jug for about 3 songs, after that, it's QUITE annoying!! Yeah, S. F. Sorrow IS the first rock opera. Part of the reason it was "heavily influenced by The Beatles" was because they were in the same studio (along with Pink Floyd and Tomorrow) all recording their greatest psych stuff at the same time and, The Pretty Things borrowed George's sitar and Ringo's bass drum. Twink was also the drummer on S. F. Sorrow. Right after Tomorrow, he recorded a solo album called, "Think Pink". These days, he's changed his name and has become a muslim! I talk to him on FB every so often. J. K.'s mother, Mary Kaye, was the lead in the Mary Kaye Trio in the early `60's. That WCPAEB album is actually their 4th album. The 5th was listed as being by Markley. Shortly after the 5th album came out, Bob Markley got into a lot of trouble for being a pedophile! MMT WAS released in England, it's just that it was released as the double 7" e.p. that it was intended to be! We didn't do E.P.'s over here and Capitol, out & out whores that they were, had a backlog of Beatle stuff they hadn't released yet, so, they went for a full album and made side two a collection of singles material that hadn't been released on albums, yet!
