My Favorite Albums!!!

Picking a Top Ten was impossible so I am going with my Top 15 Albums of all time!!! These are simply my personal favorites. We’ll do 16-40 next week!!!

My number one progressive rock album has been the same one since it was released in 1970. McDonald and Giles. Still my favourite listen 53 years later.

Just had a first listen to the whole Mcdonald & Giles album....Thanks!!! My ears also picked up something around the 32 minute point. Maybe Steve Hackett meant it as a tribute but at the 6 minute point of Shadow of a Hierophant it sure plays out the same. Fascinating.

Those first two Psychedelic Furs albums. Incredible. Steve Lillywhite’s production. Oh my!!! And good old Todd did okay on the third. (God, I’m hoping you’re a fan otherwise none of this means squat…) And yeah, definitely give Transatlantic a bit if your time. Beyond great.

My top 10 prog albums, in no particular order, no repeat bands: Yes - Close to the Edge Magma - K.A. Banco - Io Sono Nato Libero Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down Univers Zero - Heresie King Crimson - Larks' Tongues PFM - Per Un Amico Gentle Giant - In a Glass House Anglagard - Hybris Thinking Plague - In Extremis In actuality, there are dozens more albums I rate just as highly as these. So, if I were to make this list in a week, some of the choices would probably be different.

OK, this is weird. I watched your video this morning and later went out to the thrift shop and there among the beat up copies of assorted polka music, and various other stuff was your #1 pick. The condition of the vinyl was NM and the cover was a VG for 3 bucks. What are the odds? I'm familiar with "Yes" but I've never heard this album. Same with Rush, I know Moving Pictures gets all the attention but as a day one Rush fan Farewell To Kings is my #1 fave. So many say side 1 of MP is a "perfect side" but not to me, that honor goes to AFTK, title track then Xanadu is as good as it gets! Cheers!

My favorite albums by ten of these bands: Utopia: Oops! Wrong Planet Jon Anderson: Olias Of Sunhillo Rush: Permanent Waves Kansas: Point Of Know Return Gentle Giant: s/t Pink Floyd: Animals King Crimson: In the Court Of… ELP: Tarkus Genesis: Selling England By the £ Yes: Tormato That’s right, I said Tormato! Fans I’ve spoken to hated the one tune or another that ruined the whole album, as did the production. The sound may have suffered but I love what it did for Squire’s bass tone! 3 of those tunes make it a worthwhile listen from start to finish for me. I DO love Tales! Side 2 (The Remembering) is my favorite album side in terms of context and continuity. Styx and Jethro Tull are impossible for me to pick favorites. With Styx, I can only rule out Kilroy Was Here. I don’t think it was a bad album, just not as interesting. Personally, I think we have our standout favorites by Yes, ELP and Rush (for example) because clearly they set their standards so high early on that we, as fans, felt they fell so short on later albums that it seemed obvious. I’m sure a lot of that had to do with the ever-changing recording industry, MTV and the way other media outlets covered artists (old and new). I enjoy prog like any music lover of our generation but I’m definitely more of a Jimi Hendrix/Stevie Wonder guy. I’m also all about Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin/Zappa/Trower…and no, it’s not just a guitar thing. You can spin me some Miles, Coltrane, Herbie, Buddy Rich, blues, flamenco, Bossa Nova or chamber music anytime (you get the point)! I’ve been to your non-prog album video, in which I dropped a comment and you ALWAYS reply (thank you). Don’t know if you have any videos addressing any of the names directly above but I’ll search your channel to see what I can find, Scott (or is it “Scot”?)

What a GREAT list, Scot. I love that it's a mix of more mainstream prog (e.g., Grand Illusion - a true masterpiece in 8 songs; Kansas s/t - "Journey From Mariabronn" is sublime...one of their most brilliant compositions; and Rush - AFTK which is their best for sure! "Xanadu" = listen, be amazed, repeat...), classic/quintessential prog (Genesis - pick anything from NC to WAW; and Yes - Tales grows on me everytime I listen to it!); and more "aggressive" prog (Larks Tongues in Aspic and Octupus). I wish I could fall in love with that latter category as much as have (including Happy The Man). Someday, maybe! I do keep trying. I just can't get around it sounding discordant.

I don’t have a super extensive vinyl collection having sold most of my teen collection when I was in my 30s and was in my Christian music phase. I’ve been trying to recreate my collection of 70s rock and prog in the last 10 years or so. Here’s my list of favorite prog albums that I find myself playing over and over, that I do own, no repeat bands. Lots of agreements with Scot. Genesis/Foxtrot is my #1 all time favorite album that gets so much play, not just for SR, but I love Can Utility and the Coastliners, an underrated gem. #2 ELP/Tarkus, I have BSS too, and play it a lot, but Tarkus is my go to. #3 Yes/ Fragile because it was my first one❤️ #4 Kansas/ Debut Album #5 Rush/Moving Pictures #6 Jethro Tull/Thick as a Brick #7 Frank Zappa/Zoot Allures (I’m still looking for Apostrophe, but Black Napkins is the bomb) #8 Steve Hackett/Voyage of the Acolyte #9 Pink Floyd/Wish You Were Here #10 Peter Gabriel/First Solo Album (Car-is this prog? I’m going to include it. I’ve exhausted my bands that I really play a lot). All of these bands, I have multiple favorite albums, so it’s really hard to choose. For me the top of this all-time list would have to include Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and Ambrosia's debut. Your Kansas, Styx, Yes and Rundgren's Utopia selections would also be up in there. I love your top 3, but I wouldn't go with Brain Salad Surgery. They were out of ideas, especially lyrically, and needed the words of William Blake and Sir Hubert Parry's tune (Jerusalem) to raise the overall quality somewhat. I prefer ELP's 1st 3 albums; Trilogy is my pick.

Hey Scot, it would be interesting to do a top (say) 25 where you remove the one album - one artist restriction. For example, I’m guessing there are more than 5 other Yes albums that you prefer to Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. Most channels seem to apply these restrictions, so they can mention more artists and make the video more interesting. That’s fair enough, but eventually I’d like to see the “real” favourite 10 or 25 or whatever.
