I know you’ve made a video regarding transaction fees before, but it may be interesting to revisit this topic especially as fees start to rise in today’s environment. Today, block space is already full, and we are barely along the adoption curve. It seems that only extremely wealthy individuals will even be able to afford to transact on the base layer while the greater portion of the billions in the world will be forced to a layer 2 solution, sacrificing their self sovereignty, and decentralization (whether through lightning or fedimint). To scale effectively, btc seems to have to give up this very core feature. To transact on the base layer will be a privilege that few can afford. Essentially, self custody will become VERY expensive at some point. Maybe I’m thinking about this wrong, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Matt, I like a mix of video types. One needs philosophy, theory, and application to succeed. Sometimes the spite which comes through on the videos where you attack this or that is a bit off-putting. Some things need attacking, no doubt, and you are good at it. But too much acid can eat you up. Theory and how-too videos are also important and round things out and are a nice break. I mean this sincerely and with positive intent.

Hey Matthew, there's been a lot of discussion about consolidating UTXOs due to potential future increases in fees. Should someone regularly dollar-cost averaging smaller amounts into a hardware wallet consider taking steps in that direction? Thanks for the content man you’ve helped me learn a ton.
@jonp.1084
@jonp.1084 Жыл бұрын
If he doesn't answer i would say yes from everything ive come across. Transaction fees could become quite costly in the future and if your dca is too small that could obviously become very expensive. I've heard numbers like having at least a million sat utxo's but more lately ive been hearing numbers higher than that and the higher the better in general. Id maybe do a a search for some of wicked smart bitcoin's content. He's covered this extensively at least on spaces. I can't help but think as the bull market really gets going its going to get potentially really expensive so you may want to look into getting this handled sooner than later. Thats my two sats.

Good video. I tend to prefer the videos you typically do where you explain how the incentives play out when news or new policy is being discussed, and what those implications could be for Bitcoiners. @@Bitcoin_Universityok, but does that mean that the "consolidated" utxo address remains accessible only through the hw wallet after consolidation and not through the sparrow sw wallet and its private keys ? also I suppose that individual privacy could be exposed due to consolidation as all the addresses consolidated would be presumed belonging to one and the same person after consolidation?
@Bitcoin_University
@Bitcoin_University 10 ай бұрын
@@nielsmoller2719Consolidated UTXO addresses will still be available through the recovery seed/private keys. Those 12 or 24 words can be used anywhere to derive the entire history of addresses and transactions. Your hardware wallet only shares the xpub with Sparrow, not the private keys, but that xpub is enough to derive all addresses. When you consolidate transactions, chain analysis companies assume that all UTXOs that were consolidated as well as consolidation UTXO belong to the same entity. So that's the big downside to consolidating UTXOs

I use Sparrow too! What I like about software wallets is that it can withstand hardware failure. With the seed phrase I can always restore the wallet. However what I don't like is using a public electrum server and I don't want to run my own server.

Hi Matthew! I am bullish on bitcoin but I am wondering is that a good choice for me to borrow money or use leverage on those exchanges to buy bitcoin?
@Bitcoin_University

I avoid all leverage and borrowing to buy BTC-- I think it's too dangerous. I prefer to dollar cost average and withdraw my Bitcoin from the exchange and hold it on a hardware wallet like the Blockstream Jade or Coldcard. Keep it simple and avoid leverage, since it will just heighten the volatility and you will probably end up rekt

Can anyone run a private node? I mean, how do we know if we should choose a public one or private one? Can anyone just set one up?

Anyone can run their own Bitcoin node on their laptop or desktop. You just download this and run it: bitcoin.org/en/download

Hi Matthew, thank you for the knowledge you spread. Sorry for the off topic.. I am wondering if all the scams and troubles related to crypto will eventually undermine Bitcoin, put all together with shitcoins by the media and percieved as scam by people. As I am sure that the bitcoin project was not intending to generate a speculative market like the one we see now, I also think that the Bitcoin inventors must have considered the chanche it could happen. Is it possible that all this chaos will someday dissolve and leave Bitcoin untouched? I mean, just thinking at denigration, demonization and in a future strict and stupid laws, that will make it impossible to use and will move away the general public, causing the social role of Bitcoin to fail. Hope it's just a stupid fear ;)

Well. I only use sparrow for its coinjoin implementation because it's great. My favorite desktop wallet is Electrum because of its slick and clean interface and you only click on "advanced" button if you need the rich stuff. Sparrow's UI feels unclear and overloaded with advanced features. I appreciate it though, it's the swiss army knife, you have all the knobs, but Electrum comes close. At the end. it's a matter of taste also.

Can you do a video on these outrageously high transaction fees? I have a few outstanding UTXOs I wish to consolidate and some btc that I need to get off a hot wallet but these fees have been prohibitive. Will they come down at the next pullback? or are Ordinals and the like keeping fees so high? Am I stuck waiting until the next bear market to make it cost effective?

Why do they only support desktop? It seems to me if this is usually meant to be a hot wallet, that having it available for mobile devices would make more sense.

While you can use hot wallets with Sparrow, its best use is for cold storage. It also doesn't support Lightning, which is probably what you want to mostly use on your mobile device
