Thanks Matt, great video but in regards to Ver’s book I don’t think you’ve captured the heart of his arguments. After reading it I’ve gone down a huge rabbit hole watching hours of old debates and reading old articles. I’ll I'm still learning but I'll try my best to summarize my understanding of the Big Block perspective, which I’m now nearly convinced is still relevant. 1. Bitcoin’s purpose isn’t just to make people rich it should be a freedom maximizing technology for normal people to escape the tyranny of central banks. 2. In order to do that Bitcoin should be more than just digital gold it should also be cash that’s spendable right now by the whole world creating a parallel economy outside of the banks’ control. 3. People need direct access to Bitcoin without having to go through KYC exchanges where they can be easily tracked or censored. Through a parallel economy they will get direct on-ramps daily. 4. With hundreds of millions of transactions-a-day, the ability for governments to track and censor everyone significantly decreases. 5. If we can’t use it cheaply, quickly and directly between each other no parallel economy can form meaning there is no direct access outside of expensive complicated mining. As a result everyone gets herded into KYC exchanges. This knee-caps Bitcoin’s revolutionary potential. 6. Lightning has claimed for years to be the solution for payments but still doesn’t work and never will because its design is flawed. (Evidently Nic Carter, who is a respected investor in Lightning companies, now basically says its a failure and its time to find new approaches.) 7. Therefore the best way to allow for high volume payments is and always has been to increase the block size. 8. There are three main arguments against this- 1) This will centralize nodes 2) This will cause a backwards incompatible hard fork 3) Once block rewards have diminished miner fees will drop too low to continue to incentivize miners unless blocks are full and transaction fees are high. 9. Counter Arguments 1) Node centralization due to increased block size isn’t a real problem because storage technology increases fast enough to counteract it. For example I can buy a 10TB drive for $100 right now, easily storing more than 10x the current blockchain at home. Storage rates and bandwidth (fiber, 6G, Starlink etc) increases will continue eventually completely outpacing the blockchain size necessary for Visa level payments. In time this will become a completely moot argument. 2) As long as a grandson can plug his grandpa’s old seed phrase into the new blockchain and still retrieve his old coins, a one-time hard fork isn’t really a problem. 3) Block rewards and high transaction fees will be replaced by super high transaction volume driving mining incentives. Millions of tiny fees add up enough to support the network. 10. In summary artificially limiting the bandwidth of the entire network to the equivalent of 1 jpeg worth of data every ten mins and keeping it that way forever, no matter how much technology improves, is kinda crazy.

Why doesn't running a bitcoin node without using it for your own transactions not make any difference? I thought that more nodes existing outside of corporate and government structures, the safer the system becomes. Could you please expand as it is the first time I heard about that. Thank you

The argument that a node is not helpful if you are not runnning your transactions through it makes no sense . Even if you’re not currently transacting through your node, keeping your node online: 1. Boosts Redundancy: Every active node makes the network harder to attack. 2. Helps New Nodes Sync: Nodes rely on peers to download the blockchain. More active nodes mean faster and more reliable syncing for others. 3. Strengthens Bitcoin's Resilience: A high number of nodes makes it impossible for any single entity to gain undue influence over the network.

Running more nodes doesn't give you any additional power. If BlackRock ran 1 million nodes, and real Bitcoiners ran 20,000, things would still be fine. Fortunately, Bitcoin is not a democracy

Otc matches transactions. You sell 1000 i buy 1000 so no change to price. Think of when you send btc from one wallet to another. None of this affects price.
@chinchin-v5w10 сағат бұрын
I really don't understand the obsession with staying behind. There has been research that proves you can limit the consensus data to a very small size, keep the UTXO set and enjoy a constant size ledger. There have been also new and better PoW protocols that can improve BTC's scalability without any security and decentralization tradeoffs Without these advancement in BTC, BTC is letting leading science to slip from its grip. Look up Mining in Logarithmic space, and various protocols like SPECTRE, and GHOSTDAG. but like how BTC's staying behind, the people who listen to you stay behind, so you won't bother.

You have the up to date blockahain downloaded and you are sharing it with your peers. The enforcement happens when you are broadcasting. Having your node run 24/7 is for convenience. It does not help enforcing the protocol.

That was a very interesting snap-shot of the 'Block-size wars'. You mentioned the possibility of a more in-depth video on this topic, which I for one would welcome, as I know very little about it, not having been involved with Bitcoin at that time. I think you asked yesterday about your sound quality - it is rather echo-y but perfectly audible.
