I’ve been wanting to read ‘Hunger’ for some time now. I always put it in my Book Outlet cart. but I had a realization not that long ago as to why I have the relationship that I have with my body and I’m still trying to process it. so I don’t know if reading Hunger would help or not. I love this whole list and I wish I could read all the ones I haven’t right now. like. now!

I read fun home for a comics class a couple years ago (loved it) and my prof showed us a Making Of type video of bechdel explaining that every single frame of fun home was drawn with her using a photo of herself as a body reference and i just thought that you'd like that fact as a poetic kind of permeation of self situation onto the story

unrelated but I LOVE YOUR MAKEUP!!! The books that you talked about that stood out to me the most were: -The 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo, it's become BookTube staple and I REALLY NEED TO READ IT -The cruel prince, bc of the same thing I said about -The Shatter Me series (I know you just talked about Restore Me but) I'm planning to read those books this year! -A very large expanse of sea bc it sounds lie the most heartwrenching book -And I darken series bc it just sounds so feminist and action packed and worth it! -The diviners series bc I LOVE HORROR YA -the Christina Lauren books bc I need to read their books especially bc I love romance -The Secret History bc I've been meaning to read that since 2013, or something like that - A thousand splendid suns bc a lot of people I know praise the author and I really need to get to that book -Hunger bc I love books that talk about body image and fatness and Roxane Gay is so important to the nonfiction genre and to the MeToo and Body Positive movement -Fun Home bc it's the only book I've read that you mentioned and holy crap I love that memoir. If you're interested I know there's a bootleg on youtube so you can watch the musical but if not you can listen to the cast recording, it IS SO GOOD!!! Loved hearing you talk about all the books you read and loved in 2018!

Wow I haven’t seen a Kultgen book getting any attention in years it seems like! I read TAAM when it came out my freshman year of high school. At the time I just thought it was funny in the way that a teen with no idea of what adult men are like would, haha. I remember the boy who sat next to me in class saw the cover one day then grabbed the book and started reading it aloud. He found the book accurate, which very much shapes my opinion of the book now as an adult lmao. I think the questions you raised about masculinity are interesting, but I think the prevalence of men like the narrator and how easily it is for men to openly identify with him almost prevents any serious discussion from taking place. I think if it’s considered an “accurate” potrayal of the average man by men themselves, then any analysis has to accept that too. I don’t assume the book is a commentary on men; I really do think it was the author’s attempt to just write plainly about men, otherwise it wouldn’t have resonated so well with men at the time.

I just have something to say about AVLEOS, in Islam ( religion of Muslims) it is extremely forbidden to get into romantic relationships ( BF/GF ) unless it’s marriage , and seeing that portrayed by a Muslim author, in addition to it being between a MUSLIM girl and a guy is just a no. If you’re poorly informed about your own religion you shouldn’t be writing about Muslims unless you do your research, and what disappoints even more is that the author’s Muslim, so she SHOULD know this, and seeing her write about it and giving people a wrong impression of our religion is just devastating and sad. I’m sorry but me being a Muslim and seeing this, I couldn’t just let it pass.
@xocoolchickxo6 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking too, I haven't read the book but Whitney described it in one of her vlogs and yeah you're right that muslims aren't supposed to be in relationships outside of marriage.
@WhittyNovels6 жыл бұрын
no i totally understand you! i've seen tahereh discuss before how culture isn't a monolith and obviously she's only writing about her experiences, which absolutely shouldn't represent the whole of every muslim woman. you have a totally valid concern and the book shouldn't stand alone as the only representation of muslim relationships.
