Great video! I'm 52 and sold most of my individual stocks earlier this year. Most of my money is now in SCHD, DGRO, DIVO, JEPI/Q, BST, BIL and SGOV in various accounts. No point for retail investors to be in individual stocks IMHO. I don't miss that drama à la MMM, INTC, T... I still own some individual stock; my goal is to liquidate most of them for ETF's. I will hang on to my REITs and BDC's.

It's always nice to see investors expanding their outlook on finance. I remember your dividend stock vs ETF video. I made a comment (on a different KZbin account) about why I preferred ETF investing and you responded with an amicable reply. Since then, I have started investing in individual dividend stocks as well (though I am still mainly an ETF investor). And now, you are mostly an individual dividend stock investor but now you are also investing in ETFs. I think this is a testament of both of our willingness to grow by considering options that are outside of what we are used to doing. P.S. SCHD is my favorite dividend growth ETF. DGRO is great too, but SCHD is much closer to how I typically invest (I am value oriented). I don't really hedge against myself very much. I suppose I just charge into the market and if I lose then I probably earned it. Haha P.P.S. I know how you feel concerning HE. I got screwed with KHC back around 2018 when they made an "accounting error." The company looked very good fundamentally until they "corrected their mistake."

Really interesting that you mentioned portfolio overlap, it’s a similar reason why i chose SCHD. I’m 25 and in my ROTH every two weeks goes 1/2 paycheck between 4 individual tech stocks and 1/2 split between QQQ and SCHD. In an initial look, DGRO also had somewhat of a tech holding much like QQQ so I was thinking it could be wise to diversify away from tech with SCHD. Just sharing my thoughts. Thanks for the content!

I'd suggest adding QQQ alongside SCHD if you want higher growth potential and more diversification at the expense of lower yield vs buying DGRO. In fact, a 60/40 portfolio of SCHD and QQQ would have the same starting yield as DGRO but with an even higher 5-YR dividend CAGR of 12.56%. In fact, backtesting the three funds with a $1M starting balance since the inception of DGRO in 2014 through August of 2023, rebalanced annually, resulted in annualized total returns of 12.52% for the SCHD/QQQ combo and only 10.83% for DGRO. The latest full-year dividend income for each portfolio was $79,800 for SCHD/QQQ and only $56,200 for DGRO (in 2022). I'd argue the 200 companies in the NASDAQ 100 and Dow Jones US Dividend 100 are a stronger combination than the 400+ companies in DGRO, as well as the 500 companies in the S&P while still offering more than enough diversification.

As for DGRO vs. SCHD, let's face it, SCHD has the better track record. But, when you look at the details, SCHD has had a few off years, and when it has an off year, DGRO has always had a better year. I think this is about diversification and how it has impacted particular yearly economies. In some ways, these two ETFs are complimentary, but over all, SCHD has done better. So, if you can stomach that occasionally in the short term, SCHD is going to lag, go with SCHD. But, if you prefer a more diverse portfolio where sometimes a broader index does better, intermix some DGRO with your SCHD - both funds are good funds that have nice returns.

Ian, your previous argument remains valid in this case: you own >30 stocks and this by itself is a self-picked/self-managed ETF. This also has other advantages: 1. you do not need to own all the stocks that SCHD owns; 2. You do not need to buy stocks that have very high current valuation; 3. you never need to sell (SCHD on the other hand has a 12% annual turnover rate. Yeah, $HE is painful, but you have 30+ others to support your portfolio. SCHD also has its fair share of failures and the fund manager has to regularly sell and rinse its holdings.

I would disagree with your explaination of the "GRO" part of DGRO. It isn't saying that the dividend will grow, it's because the share price of the fund will grow, which is why they hold large positions in AAPL and MSFT. I love those two companies, but have no expectations that they will grow their dividends greatly anytime in the near future.

Is SCHD or DGRO pay a "qualified" dividend? Do these funds rebalance their composition quarterly/annually based on changes in component company dividends? This video was a banger, BTW. Ugh, the dreaded dividend trap - unfortunate to hear about your experience this week and wishing you all the greatest! To my knowledge, they pay qualified dividends. Doesn’t make sense for me to buy these in a Roth since I can only add $6500/ year. If I want to buy $50k or $100k of this to have the dividend make something noticeable it’ll have to be in the taxable account.

Hey PPCIAN thanks for your content. Im from the Netherlands and investing almost the same way you do. I have found an comparible ETF GGRA/GGRG WisdomTree Global Quality Dividend Growth UCITS ETF - USD Acc. This one is almost the same but no dividend distrobutions so you don't have to wurry where you put your dividends. Maybe you can take a look. I think this one is better tax wise?

I like SCHD ..... looking into All their holdings they have some money in some experimental stocks I would never buy. Speculative the word I'm looking for. Seems like a bit of gambling. Why not shit can those and pick up positions in more solid companies on the right.....in DGRO

All great thoughts... Both funds have passive/algorithmic strategies. they follow their respective indices. My initial thoughts aligned with yours in some respects (saw some "wacky" selections in there), although I actually see it in a different light. I did find some holdings in SCHD I would not personally buy. However, as mentioned in the video, I love that this fund "thinks" differently than I would. It adds a different flavor to the portfolio. And, the results speak for themselves. Will be interesting to see how the funds perform in the next 5 years. Both are great funds, in my opinion. (Disc: I'm long SCHD)

DIA pays a different different dividend every month? It's never the same amount per share. Most companies like reality income is 25 cents per share per month.

2 dollars 61 cents a year is a low amount for the 75 dollars it costs, you could do a lot better by holding stocks, example if you buy one shares of Wall green one share of AT&T and one share of Western Union you make more money you are diversified and still your cost is a lot less compared to just buying one share of an ETF. In my opinion any ETF pay to little and you pay maintenance fees
