For the last episode of My Favorite Riff, we end on a high note as Nikki sits down with his good friend Slash. They talk about their shared love for Aerosmith, learning Zeppelin riffs, and the joy of being a musician..

I met Slash in Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks CA. His kid was about 7 and having a ridiculous temper tantrum literally flopping around on the floor crying, Slash was trying to get drum sticks but didn't have any money. I met a childhood hero of mine and he was utterly humiliated having a "dad moment" in public. I told him I would pay for the sticks and he wouldn't take them for free. So weird, but I'll never forget it.

@@paws_offury I think it's Nikki, but not Slash. I'm certain Nikki had to be revived with not one, but two shots of adrenaline straight to the heart! It's a crazy story, you should look it up. Basically, the EMT on the scene was a fan, so he knew who he was attempting to save. He gave him the first shot straight to the heart and it didn't make it start beating again. Apparently, him being a fan, he was extra motivated to save him, so he gave him a second shot and that one worked. There's more madness to the story. It goes, Nikki signed himself out of the hospital two or three hours later, against the doctor's recommendation. He went straight home, left a message on his answering machine that said "Hi, this is Nikki, I can't come to the phone, I'm dead" then shot up more heroin! He woke up the next day with the needle still in his arm, that was the moment he decided to try and get help to get clean. It's not hard to find him telling the story, you should look it up, absolutely insane!

I think hearing Page play "Whole Lotta Love" years later, was the motivating factor that pushed me to re-examine the Les Paul as an instrument, after years of playing Strats and Strat style guitars like Krammer. Nikki, I remember driving from Pittsburgh, PA to Millington, TN as a young Marine in my 71' Chevelle, back in 1988 with a friend. We listening to the album , "Shout at the Devil" over and over. The guitar was so sharp and cutting and the bass was so thunderous and punchy. Good times...

I don't know if you are still looking at this, but I need to say something. This was sooo awesome. My youngest son is a guitar player, so naturally talented. I am a music freak, and gave my boys the love of great music. My youngest son has a beautiful Fender, original starburst finish, and he can play it til I wanna cry. I bought him an autistic for Christmas, he is sooo into it. He's gonna be the guy who has 10, 20 guitars lol. I love it, I am so into encouraging him. He's getting into blues, old classic country. Most parents would be like"put it down" when they are going to bed. I hear my kid playing, practicing guitar when I lay down to go to bed... I love it. It puts me to sleep with a smile 😊.

The part he's talking about on Whole Lotta Love is that while you fret the D note on the A string you play the open D string while slightly bending the fretted D note upwards. It gives the riff that distinct warble and is very noticeable on the recording.

I get where they are coming from when they talk about feeling the best playing in the group setting. I played in the same band for almost 30 years before my drummer moved out of state. We obviously aren't Motley Crue or Guns N Roses, but what I miss the most were getting together with the boys and jamming out on Sunday mornings at practice. Not so much the shows - even though they were great, it was just the creative energy around those practices that I enjoyed the most - getting everything ready to go into the studio and record. While I still play my guitar all the time, and it's a part of me, I still have the "form a band, take over the world" mentality.

Always looked up to Nikki, I have a very vivid memory of an interview with him, being at home, working on being sober and a good dad. He said something that really stuck. He was with his kids and said if you can’t stick some carrots up your nose to make your kids laugh then you really need to re-evaluate yourself and your life. I think i brings a reality of life that even the biggest rock stars have to bring themselves down to reality and just be a person. He’s always been a big influence in many ways

Slash reminded me of the Gary Moore< Cheap Trick (live@ Budakon) ,Kiss Alive II at the Pontiac Silverdome July 11th or 12th somewhere close to one of those days and between Cheap Trick & KIss the PAs started jamming Whole Lotta Love and it was surreal EVERYONE, started freaking Loudly and stood up for like a huge moment ...Not even Joking for a 16yr. old i thought Led Zep was there by the reaction....(im 55 now and never forgot how that made me feel!!!!) Glib there is a channel on KZbin of a guy named Cameron Cooper, that dials some pretty good tones out of the thr10x, you should check it out. But yes I recommend it. As a study or apartment amp it is very nice, because you can play on a moderate noise level without losing gain, also a lot of different distortion and effect options, and it works as an computer interface.

Welcome to the Jungle, the opening riff defines the 80's for me. I remember hearing it thinking, ok here come the 80's. Sink, swim or party! And party I did. Awesome time to be alive! Slash's use of his neck pickup single handedly changed my sound over the past 30 years. And many of you agree, it's a great sound!
