First time viewer here, and i subscribed 30 seconds in the video, because i love your authentic personality and your accent which sounds truly unapologetically Indian. (I'm fed up of fake accents). Also I love all types of Dal.

I love how this video shows up an hour after I made black dal for myself, except I made it completely differently and ate it with rice, so it's nice to learn when I've done everything wrong.

No such as wrong! If you enjoyed it, it was right :) Lots of alternative recipes exist but none more right than any other

Another recipe to try- it looks delicious. If anyone has children who fuss about bay leaves or whole spices in their meal, treat it as a treasure hunt, and reward the finder with a shiny coin.They will soon be clamouring for extra spice. Bribery is a good thing.

That looks great! Unrelated question, Chetna, what sort of Tamarind should I buy for use in my kitchen? In the past I've used Tamicon Tamarind concentrate but I think this may not be the best way to introdcue the flavour and colour that Tamarind should give. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks

This cozy dish looks gorgeous! What pans are you using with the hex design on the bottom? Are they new? I haven't seen you say anything about them?

🖤 Love black dal. Is whole urad dal the same as the dal the bouji grocer sells me as black caviar lentils?

What’s the Hindi word for adding the hot oil and spices? We in Trinidad call it “ chunkay.

Is this the same as beluga lentils?
@ClaudiaJasalavich9 күн бұрын
No, beluga lentils are a variety of lentils, scientific name Lens culinarus. Urad dal Is a different species, Vigna mungo. It is a sister species to mung beans, which are the species Vigna radiata.

How similar is the black dal, to the green lentils we get in France??? I can't get the black, only white, red or green... would your recipe work with green French lentils.. ?
@ClaudiaJasalavich9 күн бұрын
I cook and eat both French green lentils ( a variety of Lens culinarius) and urad dal (Vigna mungo). To me, the innate flavor of each of these legumes is quite different. I love them both. But I have never tried spicing them the exact same way. Why not experiment and cook a small amount of French green lentils using Chetna's spice combo and see if you like it.
