my favorite hiking shirt is a white or cream colored long sleeve dress shirt. I used to use a old dress shirt of my own, it wore out, started ripping at the top of the sleeves, so just last week I went to a thrift store and picked up a white one for $6 and a cream colored one for $4. Both are cotton poly, very thin fabric, so they will dry quickly if they get wet, but also won't last a long time, but for the price that's fine. The reason I like white or off-white is I find it much cooler than darker colors when hiking in bright sunshine which I do a lot of where I live. I also like it for high altitude, above timberline hiking in Colorado where the sun is quite intense. I like the long sleeves for sun protection, but also for flexibility--I can roll them up when I want to.

Brilliant! Definitely a good choice with lighter colours if you're hiking in heat 👍 and it's always good to have items that dry quickly! Thanks for watching!

@@PaulandaPack thanks. I realize the white shirt is probably not something you'd want in the UK where it's damp and cool, or even damp and cold. I have to confess I've become a fair weather hiker over the years and even relocated from a place that has a climate like yours, Whidbey Island in Washington State, to a place the sunny most of the time. Kudos to you for getting out there even when weather is not perfect ;-)

Very informative, and I can second the recommendation for Darn Tough socks. I have been using them for years because I like to walk to work (fair weather only!).

Thank you Anne! Another Darn Tough user! I totally forgot to mention their lifetime guarantee in the video.

Awesome video pal. I do like the Farpointe hoody. I remember being amazed at it when we did our Peak District hike. Also like the look of the waterproof jacket. I'm in the market for the a lightweight one, so will check yours out on the CW.

Thanks mate, this one took an age to edit! The light was so bad and I just hadn't realised. Sure thing, you can have a try of it when we're out there, just not when it's raining! 🤣

I don't understand why you have so many jackets. I only use one jacket - a Rab waterproof. It serves well against the wind, and fleece (to be replaced by Polatec Alpha) and a merino shirt underneath is enough for me for temperatures around zero Celsius. I also use a Sunday Afternoons hat, just a slightly larger Charter Hat. It's proven itself in the heat.
@PaulandaPack4 ай бұрын
Hi mate, there's a couple of reasons for the abundance of jackets! The Rab is a recent purchase and I'm currently wondering if it will replace the Arc'Teryx altogether, or just be used for more damp locations. (I should stress that I don't take them all with me on my trips!) I really don't like hiking in waterproofs unless it's raining, and have found that lighter weight ones like the Firefly, and a Montane one that I used to use, degrade faster when worn under a backpack. The light windbreaker means I can use that for very light rain, also wind, and keep my waterproof in better shape for longer. Totally agree about the hat - I've used a wider brim Patagonia sun hat on a few trips and it's really helped out.

So thorough , you've got your facts down. If I have to purchase one of those hoodies to see if it works for me. Great video thanks for sharing.

Thank you! The Farpointe stuff is definitely worth checking out. There's an 'Octa Cruiser' that I want to have a look at and find a bit more information on. Thanks for watching!

Very informative video. What are the differences between the silver ridge lite button up you have and the replacement utility lite that you say ia inferior? Can you please elaborate as i was planning to buy the l/s version. Your insight would be very much appreciated

Hi, thanks for watching! I found the newer ones to have a slightly different cut and I didn't find them as comfy. I also found that they were nowhere near as long lasting - I don't know if the material changed, but they certainly didn't hold up as well as the older ones I still have.

Great Video Paul, how do you find the breathability of the Xenon whilst hiking? I believe it’s more of a static/belay type jacket… is it not too clammy when ya crushing the miles? Cheers
@PaulandaPack3 ай бұрын
Hey mate, I'd say from the little experience that I've had with it so far, that breathability is it's weakness. Most of the times I've used it have been in pretty strong wind and relatively low temperatures (10 Celsius and below). For those conditions, it's been fine, but I've yet to test it in other conditions.

@@PaulandaPack thanks Paul, I was using the Montane Prism over 3 weeks on the Camino Santiago last December with great success during the day, very changeable weather with temperatures down in single digits. Only when going out in the evenings when temperatures dropped below freezing I could’ve done with something a bit warmer, so I am considering increasing the insulation from 40gsm with the Montane to 60gsm. Either that or I try a Senchi 120 under the Montane …. 🤔 decisions decisions

@@JammyJerry If in doubt mate - buy both! It's usually what I end up doing 😄
