HOLY CRAP GUYS... I finally made it to Baghdad - the wild capital city of Iraq! It's a place that I've been dreaming of visiting for 5 years now, and I was luckily able to pick up the visa at the Iraqi embassy in Istanbul a few weeks ago.
In the first episode of this 9-part series, I document the stressful, yet exhilarating experience of getting into Baghdad with my fellow 'every country' buddy Alvaro ( / wanderreds . Our first 24 hours has been a roller coaster of emotions, but in the end, I am LOVING it here and I can't wait to see more! 🇮🇶 Have I ever mentioned to you that the Middle East is my favorite region in the world?

Also from 9 AM to 6 PM you people use megaphones to sell vegetables and fruit and all kind of stuff so you can’t even get peace. This video was patronising and borderline racist towards Iraq. From pretending they were in "danger" by picking a taxi outside the international airport, to acting like their passports "were confiscated" by border police when in fact that is normal procedure which I have had happen to me in many countries considered "safe." From the early city states of Mesopotamia to being the medieval hub of trade and education in the Arab World. There is much more to Iraq then the war, it is a country that is always changing. @@sowdha79 You’d be amazed to find out Saddam was a sectarian, he believed in equality. The party he represented, the Ba’ath party (Ba’ath means renaissance) wanted to modernize Iraq (and did so very successfully) and separate the church from the state. Simultaneously, if you were of any threat to the Ba’ath party you would be punished. This is the reason for the gas attacks on the Kurds and the executions of many Shia Muslims in 1982 (attempted assassination on Saddam). Those that were accused of treason against the Ba’ath party were dealt with brutally. Saddam was not anti any religion or sect of people, even Jews lived peacefully in Iraq. Saddam hated discrimination, but he hated “traitors” even more.

My family are jews from Baghdad. Although it sounds crazy Once upon a time (in the 1940’s) there were over 150,000 Jews in Iraq. This is where the Talmud was written, and this is where some of the prophets are buried including prophet Yehezqel and prophet Ezra. The Jews from Iraq are considered the most ancient jewish community, outside of the land of Israel, dating back from the Babylonian Exile. Many of the greatest Rabbis also come from this beautiful land including Rabbi Yosef Hayim (the Ben ish hai), and former chief rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.

@Speed Junkie Then your Torah knowledge is, pardon me, superficial and not derived in theoriginal Hebrew Language. Normative Judaism and normative Torah is "Zionist" in that it associates Jewish life, history, and future with the Land of Israel-period. Call it traditional Torah Judaism, mainstream Orthodoxy, or Religious Zionism if you wish. I am NOT talking about either: Socialist G-dless Zionism, nor fringe anti-Zionism like Neturei-Qarta. I am talking about historical, mainstream, observant and Torah-knowledgeable Jews. As long as our cousins Beney-Yishma'el do not accept this, we stay peaceful, but armed and prepared if you attack us.

@@um4lik398 kurds love Iraq and iraqi people but there are Some iraqi citizens that are not a fan of kurdistan. There's many many reasons, but one I can think of straight away is because we tried to get independence and be our own country and baghdad denied it. Either the conversation goes like "you're iraqis, stop calling yourselves kurds so shut up" or it's "you're not iraqi, you tried to leave Iraq you traitors" at least from my experience those are the arguments I hear. But either way I truly don't care, I'm not gonna let the hatred of a couple of people change my opinion on Iraq as a whole and baghdad, I love all of it equally.

I kept telling people that it wasn't as bad as they thought. Your visit is worth a 1000 visits by people like me. I even stay at the hotel you stay at.
