I took my black friend to a nascar race about 12 years ago. Tailgated, camped out, drank some beer, he fit in just fine. He went with us again the next year lol. I give him credit for going with us though because he probably didn’t know what to expect. People aren’t as racist as the talking heads on TV want you to believe.

I was working as a security manager at a manufacturing facility in Arlington, Texas and most of my staff was black. Suffice to say, I glow in the dark. My number two guy was about ten years older than me and we were good friends. When his mother died, I went to the funeral. I got some funny looks walking up to the church until I told them who I was and they welcomed me with open arms. I laughed my ass off at that funeral. The stories they told were hilarious. They were there celebrating her more than mourning her loss.

I was working down south in Georgia and was invited to a cookout. I pulled up into the yard full of cars with Illinois Plates. I heard the muttering with the word Yankee involved. I realized that this wasn't going to be a fun situation. When I was introduced to the family by the Man who invited me. It was a sure thing that the Civil War would come up in conversation. I was not sure what happened next but when I was asked what I thought of the outcome of the Civil War. I told them that I believed that Grant had stolen Lee's sword and Lee was too much of a Gentleman to ask for it back. There was a sudden burst of laughter and all was great for the rest of the cookout. You never know what you are getting into sometimes.

I went to Catholic elementary school.. The entire school was white except for the 3 Bond children.. Eileen was in my grade and we became great friends because we were both very into sports.. We were also both the youngest in our families.. I never realized till I got older how difficult it must have been for those 3 children to be the only black kids in the school.. She was my bestie and would come over to my house all the time for sleepovers and what not.. and I loved her.. but I did go one time to her home for a party and I was the only white girl there... I was about 10 and I remember feeling out of place.. I have to believe that she went through that feeling 1000 times more than I ever did.

Let me clarify things for you. He was nervous because while his buddy invited him, the whole family is not that buddy. All it takes is one misunderstanding to set off a situation. Yes, they may be the nicest people ever, but he has to get to know them to learn that. Until he did, he didn’t know how they felt.

Best friend growing up in the 70s was black, her mom from the South. I am florescent white. I was so happy when got to spend the night on Sat. The food was so good, the singing after dark was amazing, and church the next morning was so much better than my usual. Not every relative was thrilled with me being around, but most were so sweet. A place in time I really miss.

Oh, I've so been there! Back in 1971, I visited my British pen pal at her home on my 1st visit to the UK. Here I was, a 15-year-old German girl -- 5'10", blue-eyed, blonde (you couldn't get more typecast in a 1930s Hollywood movie), invited to share a semi-formal Shabat family meal with a (I think) Sephardic Jewish family (who looked just as stereotypical in their way as I did). Nicest people ever, totally welcomed me ... well, except for the maternal grandparents who managed to flee from Germany just in time before you-know-who started messing up the world; I really got the reason and just took them ignoring me in stride ... but yeah. Absolutely felt like the proverbial fish out of water. 🙂

It's true, I lived in Kuwait for a time and to be the only Caucasian walk into a restaurant and slowly every head turns my direction and they watch me walk to my table, and later after the food comes each takes their turn to sneak furtive glaces my direction until I am done and then I am followed out with every eye in the place. It is an odd sensation, but it is really just cultural curiosity and the people who I met while there were lovely and generally friendly people. Though not as striking, I had similar sensations when I lived in Germany, once you are out of the States, you can tell an American several blocks away on a city street. Regardless of your skin tone, when you are the outlier in a social situation it can make you self conscience and that's what is so relatable about his story.

When I first got to the Philippines, I was invited to many parties. Karaoke in full swing, guys and drinking, etc...Being raised in south Texas, drinking isn't an "issue". But, the massively favorite drink here is gin. I don't like or drink gin. I am a beer/whiskey type dude. And each guy doesn't have his own glass. The round robin, meaning there is one glass for the gin shot, and one glass for the water or coke. It's community sharing (and a good way to catch Covid!) . But, being polite to the foreigner, they gave me my own glass. Out of courtesy, I took a couple of shots. My wife, tho, knowing quite well, had already sent for a case of beer for me. Now, having been here for 13 yrs, I STILL do not do the "community shot". Now tho, most parties and such I am invited to, they already know, or have heard, and usually provide me with beer, whiskey, or brandy. I will, of course, show up with a few bottles of gin for them as well! Works out fine!
