Love the determination. My late wife lost her battle with cancer in 2021 just before her 39th birthday, but enjoyed her last year on year on a pontoon we bought. The water was therapeutic for her. One thing we promised ourselves when she was diagnosed was to stay positive. We were both able to do that for our daughter. She was head strong like you. Thanks for the great video.

Thank you and I’m so sorry for your loss. That must have been very difficult for you and your family. I’m glad you were able to make the best of the time you had left together with your wife. I’m sure those memories on the boat are invaluable. Best wishes to you and your family.

I’m loving how you freehand the circular saw and not even particularly carefully, yet still get what you want. That’s a skill! I use a guide rail, slowly and carefully, making several cuts to get down to the Final Cut line, yet still sometimes get it wrong and have to go back to the beginning. I used to work in a boat factory, alongside master cabinet makers, one of whom taught me a lot. One of his favourite sayings was, “I can’t understand it. I’ve cut this four times now and still it’s too small!” It could have been coined specifically for me, on one of my bad days, though he actually used to say it before I ever showed any interest in the cosmetic parts of a boat. One of the things he was very forceful about was, you should never screw into the edge of a plywood board. The screws will force the veneers apart and won’t grip properly. He used what he called fillets, which he glued and screwed from the inside, where they couldn’t be seen on the finished article.

The boat looks sooo much better! Boats are normally money pits so in my opinion its better to have something like that where you can beat on it, have fun and not worry about scratching the gelcoat or putting a nic in the upholstery. You can have tons of fun and still sell it for a profit, that rarely happens with boats so thats great. Love your edit inserts, they are brilliant!
@jennifersugint

Definitely spoken like a seasoned mechanic “eh, we’ll figure it out”; also a thing I found that helps on open area for boats.. I grab a cheapo palm sander with no and paper and just press it on top of the magic erasers and sprits water from a bottle.. just speeds it up a little bit.

Girl, you’re exactly the way I am when I start something it pisses me off when weather or something else inhibits me from finishing it and nine times out of 10. I’ll actually just keep on going about it even if it’s weather just stay protected from the weather or whatever I’m working on stay protected from the weather.

Automotive machinist here... and I am thinking ''holy smokes'' at that price. At first the 'clean, suck, 'n, shave' price seemed about right. Then I noticed it had a belt sanded finish, not a machined finish. Paid for champagne, got toilet tank water. It's not flat, it's ''flat''. On the upside, with a low compression 4cyl and a thick composite gasket, it should seal and live.

I was a novice mechanic when I was 12 much like you are now...put my first engine together at 16 it was 327 chevy with some goodies by the time I was in my 20's I rebuilt more engines than I can remember on average about 1.5 per week in a small shop we built. I started racing old muscle cars with the works installed in the engine, trans, and chassis at about the sametime. Then I got into motorcycles engines (aka superbikes) Kawasaki 1000, Honda supersport 750s and a few dirt bikes. Now I have a 1977 Baja bowrider jet boat with a olds 455. I still have a 1969 Chevy Malibu that runs 6.23 in the 1/8th mile called the Hunk of Junk Jr. I'm a ASE master tech with factory training from Ford Motor Company in electronics and electrical! I'm still turning wrenches 55 hours a week so it's safe to assume I love fixing broken engines and learn something new almost everyday. Never have I met a auto tech that knows everything including me. Doing things on your own is the best experience with a little help from a knowledgeable mechanic. Interesting vid and enjoyable! 👍 Some of the toys and work I enjoy doing! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3bQqaxvf5mVirM 😎

Jen, new to the channel here. The reason the wire bush keeps falling keeps falling off is because you have the brush turning in the same direction as it takes to loosen the chuck in the drill (the thing on the cordless drill that you tighten down to hold the tools in place, its called the "Chuck", not Charles, or Chucky, or What's up Chuck, just Chuck. 🤣 After you insert the arbor on the wire brush back in the chuck and tighten it back down, just reverse the wireless drill do it turn the other way. Now the brush is turning the direction the chuck is turned to tightened down on a tool . Easy Peezy!! That "straight edge" is a "Precision Tool". That means is very delicate and has to recalibrated( done by a company that recalibrates precision tools) every so often to make sure the "straight edge" is still with in tolerance. So, just be careful with it. Make certain the edge is clean dry before putting the protective cover back in the tool and putting it away. To check for flatness, put the straight edge down along the length, and then the width of the head and shine a flashlight down on the back of the straight edge. If light can be seen from under the edge of the straight edge, then the head of the block is warped and will need to be ground flat again.. Last thing, it would not hurt to spray some WD-40, liberally, on a clean cloth rag and wipe down all the exposed metal surfaces of head, including the piston head and walls, with the oily rag. This will prevent the bare steel from rusting from the humidity, alone. Oh yeah, that feeler gauge you used to check for space underneath the straight edge, you better check that for rust too. Remember, RUST and METAL are enemies. NO RUST EVER!! ON ANYTHING. Especially tools!! Take care. It is all in the learning curve, You will learn, and then remember. Name for the boat: Smelly Cat, from Seinfeld.

Hey guys, when you are dealing with anything marine in terms of wood, at least structural wood anyway, just get regular wood or plywood and coat it with fiberglass resin, you then have marine grade wood. Even if you used pressure treated you still need to do that. As for marine grade wood from the factory, It used to exist but not sure anymore and if it is available the cost would be extremely prohibitive for most projects. Just coat all woood with fiberglass resin which is relatively cheap and you now have pretty waterproof wood.

Actually just a little FYI- it’s best to wet your fresh concrete multiple times a day to help slow the curing of your slab. This will also ensure that your slab is extremely strong and durable. So remove that tarp and let it get wet. I’d wet the inside down as well to slow down the reaction and reduce the heat.

Thanks for the advice! You are correct. He did keep it wet for at least a week. He simply didn’t want the rain coming down and hitting it like pellets that day. You don't really need pressure treated wood. Before you cover it just give it a coat of fiberglass resin and you'll be good. Disassemble each wood piece and trace it on the new wood.

Impressed you tackled this by yourself with just a bit of mechanical knowledge…even though Chris helped you, I believe you did a wonderful job asking Chris questions and trying to understand all of the next steps.

Don't forget to use a heat gun to soften the vinyl when 'stretching' it. It will help making turns and radius corners.

The trick to vinyl seat covers and stuff is to heat with a heat gun. Then when it cools it shrinks a little and pulls out the wrinkles. Looks good otherwise though.

For your engine cover, put three hinges on the top back and screw it to the top of the ttransom and handles on the front lower left and right. Need engine work, just lift it up and it will rest on top of transom

Wow so I've watched all 3 of these videos. Great stuff and great job guys! I have a 17' 1988 Cobia bowrider which actually is very similar (same grey color/striping and I have a 2.5L) I've been mostly DIY since I got it 3 years ago. I still have good compression so I haven't gone this far into the engine. Rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump....etc. Anyway I just wanted to point out the wiring harness @ 26:12 in the background. I had stalling issues and after MANY unsuccessful repairs (fuel based) I unplugged that harness. It was dry and corroded. I cleaned it up and greased, did all the ground points as well. No issues since I ran through all the wiring. Something to watch out for because I missed most of this summer chasing gremlins. Hope you guys continue to make more videos about this boat!

Nice work Jenn!! They make a tool holder for that razor blade and it's much nicer to use then your fingers and safer! The wire brush adapter kept falling out as the chuck in the drill is worn and not making a tight fit on the shaft of the wire brush. Great to see a lady out working with the tools, not many out there! Hope the boat goes well, another one saved from the dump or neglected over the years. Cheers from Kingston, ON Canada! PS Saw tip, never get behind the saw when you are cutting, skill saw is always used on the right with your right hand. If you have your body across the wood and your legs are in path of the saw and it "kicks back" it will go right into your body/legs. Watch the bugs when cutting, let go of the trigger and keep the saw in the wood vs taking it out while it's the blade is slowing down incase the guard is not closed, it will cut what it pleases!

Next time you clean up a boat, get some starbrite hull cleaner. Spray it on with a garden sprayer, let it soak, wipe it down, Worth every cent of the $35 for a gallon. Then you can hit it with polishing compound on an orbital. Just as clean in like 1/3 of the time.

You did a great job of learning by doing on the cylinder head removal, and the gasket and cylinder head install/torquing. Great job on the engine cover. It doesn't have to fancy just functional and safe. I'd rather get on the water with a boat that only costs 1,000 bucks instead of 10,000 ! You get to enjoy the river/lake just as much as anybody else!! Great up in the sky video at the end with the boat cruising on the river.

At about 30 minutes, yes, that’s the exhaust manifold. It’s a lot heavier than a standard vehicle one, because it’s got a water cooling jacket, like the block. If it hadn’t, it would glow red hot and could possibly cause a fire, which obviously is less than ideal, particularly on a fibreglass boat, which can burn all the way to the waterline. You don’t tend to have that problem in a vehicle, because there’s much more airflow, coming through the radiator and also from the road passing underneath. You don’t have any of that on a boat and boat engines tend to be boxed in pretty tightly, too, because space is at a premium, so the hot bits are usually water cooled. Not always, but what you have there is as I describe, so that’s good enough for now.

You guys are too cool. I sure miss our boat a 1984 Four Winns walk thru windshield. We had loads of fun at the lake with the kids back in the 90's. Married 39 years next month. Plenty of privacy for camping, needless to say we lived at the lake in the summer time. tubing and skiing here in E. Texas. Boat looks really good, you did a good job. Have a great life together. Peace!!!

I'm out of work electrical engineer with over 60 years working in government and private sector. I have known amazing gifted women engineer and techs in my years. A positive attitude and can do force of will and wanting to learn are most important. The men engineers can be so lazy and just want to be paid for working on a problem. Women demand results!
