Efoiling is easily the best way to learn to foil and opens the door to FoilWorld which is an amazing place. I learned on an efoil and used it to get into wingfoiling which I find so much more satisfying as there’s so much more challenge involved for a former windsurfer/surfer/snowboarder. My wife doesn’t have that background and LOVES efoiling. Everybody needs to hire one at least once!

I couldn't agree more, Geoff. I hosted Aidan at my house a few weeks ago. Once he got flying out of the water, I could see his instinct kick in. He was amazingly comfortable and looked great on a foil. No doubt it's a great way to learn! I'm so glad you and your wife can share efoiling. How cool.

Indeed, that is my strategy. I also have a windsurfing and kiteboarding background. I think I will love wing foiling better then e-foiling. Plus $13k is much more than a wing rig (now about $2k). My next purchase will be an inflatable wing board so i can wing anywhere I travel to. You cannot bring an e-foil with you on a plane.

I took the 2 hour Lift e-foil lesson, and pretty much mastered it. Then bought my own pump/wind/ surf foil set up recently. I have not launched it yet (waiting for some wind on my lake), but I am sure that once I get up I will remember the lesson I had in the Fall in Destin, FL. My question is, can you steal the wake at 3:51 and shut off the e-foil motor? One more thing, It sounds like you have never done wing foiling. I think you need to do that before you lump pump foiling and wing foiling into "Classic' foiling.

Really glad you landed on that particular conclusion, as I am taking the opposite of your journey. Got about 30-40 hrs on my efoil, but finally going to learn dockstart pumpfoiling this August. Super stoked, especially since watching your videos! Expectations: Less zen, more fun of mastery of technique, more dopamine from the work-out. Find it odd that the heavy efoil was as easy to turn as regular foil, but then again that could be your Axis HA foil vs low-aspect efoil that really was compared. Or it could be mass is so centered on efoil that difference in foot-pressure is marginal. Did you compare on quick rail-2-rail too, not just single turn maneuvers?
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sven. Lets please keep in touch. I suspect I can learn a lot from your journey. Yes, I am riding large wingspan wings which had as much roll resistance as the smaller efoil wings. Great point! I think you're right, though. Small movements have less roll resistance on a regular foil because you can introduce yaw with your back foot as you then roll wing to carve, while I couldn't do this on an efoil as easily due to the thrust driving you in forward direction. I think I should make a video comparing that point. Thanks for bringing it up!

@@WakeThief So here is the end result from dock starts: Naish 2140(projected surface) HA (5.4 AR), 310HA rear wing, 75cm mast, 60cm fuse BW 215lbs 200 attempts split on 10 days. Best attempt had me at about 7-8 pumps before I stalled. I can only blame my lack of pumping technique, though it would probably have been easier with an even bigger foil. The dock had giant bars on the sides which made it impossible to do any running start, so I was forced to do a stationary start. No calm water, and some undercurent made it harder on several of the days. Got a family member to film a couple of my attempts for every session to check where I could improve my technique or whether I made any progress. On my best attempts I could feel the glide from a couple of my pumps, but the margin of error is so small I could not keep it up . On a sidenote: The guy doing the filming was a skateboarder with no foiling experience, but at 170lbs I thought he would have a massive advantage on both bw and boarding skils, but alas, after about 10 failed attempts he was not motivated to keep grinding! As I had not mastered the pumping technique prior to these attempts, I failed to complete my goal for the summer, but I am (still) super stoked about foiling. Next step is learning winging and hopefully master the pumping technique.

That’s a tough question … there’s a lot of classic foil brands. Each seem to specialize at different things. Like any industry there are pros and cons of each.

Seems super cool but firstly, I don't really have a lake near by I can try this in besides lake Michigan which is pretty far out from me (2 hours or more for a spot to do this). And secondly both look insanely expensive. So I'll pass but seems super cool.

Thanks for the comment. It's totally fair. If you're like me and have had dreams of flying, this is as close to that feeling as I've experienced. If you're ever on vacation, pull up the lift and flite and demo center locations and treat yourself to a great experience. Thanks again for your comment.

Like I really want to try it but I've never ridden a skateboard or surfboard and I'll likely have a hard time riding one. And also I'm afraid of injuries from getting onto one from a dock. I guess I'm afraid I'll jump on one then fall back and hit my head or something idk. I'll need lessons for sure.

There is a wrist strap on both controllers. As far as I know they float too, but dropping one might be hard to find.

It floats, and there's a strap that encloses your palm to the controller. Have not had a problem in 3 months. Besides.... If you drop it everything would stop and you simply grab it again.

Can you learn pump the the Efoil and after you get the hang on a Efoil can you dock start a traditional foil or will it be hours and days to learn to dock start
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Efoiling is a great way to learn to foil … I’ve seen people who were great efoilers learn very quickly the first time they classic foiled. However dock starting and pumping are different animals. No doubt efoiling will make it easier but it will still take 10-20 hours of practice to figure out … but it’s so much fun and so worth the investment of time

Hi Olwen - I don't know much about it, but definitely have seen it on KZbin. I've tried a few times, but I wouldn't say with much success. My lake just isn't windy enough. Will give it a try soon and I promise to share.

Thanks for the reply! My husband just started but I think without an efoil it's tough because you've gotta keep paddling back to your starting point but you can't carry a paddle and wing easily! I've been hauling him in my kayak hahaha!

So....which one? Flite or Lyft?
@WakeThief2 жыл бұрын
They’re very similar, but do vary across different parameters. I preferred lifts long throw trigger. I preferred flites multiple safety features. Each rider will have different preferences. And unless you have a specific top feature priority it would be hard to name a favorite.

Does an efoil get boring eventually? Seems less playful, challenging and maneuverable.
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
For some it might. I would like to do it with someone else. Tow foiling, or both thieving wakes of passing boats on the efoils would be a blast.
@mirandamitchell91023 жыл бұрын
I must say, even though I was new to foiling, I was bored after 10 minutes on an efoil. Using the wind, the waves or your own energy is a 100 times more appealing IMO.
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miranda. I might feel that way on an efoil too but haven’t yet clocked enough hours to have a strong opinion either way. I love the fact it’s so accessible for others to experience flight too
@kippywylie3 жыл бұрын
@@mirandamitchell9102 I come from 5 years of kite foiling and yes.... The boring aspect is a concern after I purchased a Lift 3 months ago. I don't particularly like a simple "zen" cruise day, but instead I'm obsessed with searching for boats to wake chase. Additionally I plan two perfect this activity for coast wave riding, and high wind swell riding. But my primary want is that we winter on a zero wind Mexico beach and I need daily sessions
@DavidFoxDotCom3 жыл бұрын
I'm having fun riding ferry wake on SF bay with my Fliteboard and catching some waves at fort point. Given the option of the right conditions, I'll take wingfoiling first, then SUP foiling in surf w/foildrive, then efoil. I own all three. The best thing about efoil is when there's no wind/no swell you can still get out on the water.

I love the out of the box thinking! I really don’t know?!?!? I wonder if the rotation of the aerobi helps it fly? I have to think about it. Thanks for taking the time to leave this note! Happy new year!
@kenjackben2 жыл бұрын
@@WakeThief there's also another flying circular aircraft it's called an geobat there's an old video from 2011 of an RC plane that uses a circular wing because it's more stable at lower speeds there is even a paper airplane cut out not entirely sure why the principles of that cannot be applied to a hydrofoil if you took the aerobi design and turned it into a hydrofoil and used it in much the same way you can make very large hydrofoils or even multiple hydrofoils on one device to increase stability
