There is SO much equipment you can get for electric instruments that it can be a little intimidating for first time buyers. In this video, we try to de-mystify the entire system and help you understand what you might want to get for your first rig.

This video is fantastic; I’ve been playing electric live for a few years, but it’s great to hear what others are doing! I’m particularly intrigued to hear there are 6 and 7 string violins! I have a 5 string 😆

So, for a novice, what goes in first: preamp or pedalboard? Also, for a rented violin: are there pickups/mics I can connect then take off before returning it?

Hey! I'm not a violin player but I really love the sound of string instruments in songs. A friend of mine plays electric, he doesn't have pedals but I do for my instruments. (Guitar pedals) he wanted to play with my pedals and came over, he only has the cable that came with his violin and it worked plugged into my amp but when we plugged it into my pedals and I used my guitar cables to connect the chain to the amplifier it didn't work. Do we need a special kind of cable??? What do you think went wrong? I want him to play on my album and we're stumped. Appreciate all your videos! Thank you

Would it also make a difference what genre you're playing as far as effects are concerned? A jazz violinist is definitely going to sound different than say a country or rock or heavy metal violinist.

This is a question we get a lot. The answer is - sort of. There's so much cross-genre influence now that you might hear a distorted violin in a jazz band and an acoustic sounding violin in a rock band or a synth sound in a country band. It really comes down to what holes you want to plug in the band you're in.

I don’t need an amplifier. I am considering an electric violin because I suffer from chronic migraines and I can’t have the regular loud sounds in my ear. 😢

Thanks for this video, it's been really helpful! I'm considering to get a preamp, I have some FX (reverb an RV-6 BOSS, delay DD-3 BOSS) but I don't have an amp, I just plug it into the PA, I guess I need a preamp so the sound could be better, Am I right? I'd appreciate your help. Thanks!

Whether you need a preamp or not depends on a number of things. Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqbHknRra7OWa5o

I couldn't say for sure without hearing you and what you're plugging into, but it's probably worth having one.

Here's what I'd do: I'd buy something like a Baggs Paracoustic DI. Put it at the front of your signal chain and record yourself. Then bypass it and record yourself again. You'll be able to hear the difference and you'll know whether it's worth it or not. If it's not making a $200 difference, return it.

Passive DI

Generally, you'd do a passive DI with an active violin and vice versa. "Active" means it has a preamp in it. It's totally okay to have multiple preamps (even in a row), but ideally, you'll have at least one somewhere.
