How I KAYAK fish for LINGCOD (and other species in the same water)

I use 4 inch plastic sand dabs it tends to only get lingcod and keeps the rockfish catching to a minimum.

One thing when landing lings: try not to pull the head out of water before it’s in the net. Sometimes they’ve clamped hard on the bait but they aren’t actually hooked. They’ll stay clamped on in the water, but they’ll usually let go if their head comes out. This happens more frequently with live bait like Greenling.

Totally! I only included one catch but I got three in twenty minutes then quit. It was a little painful watching them jump all over while I slowly drifted for lings and halibut.

Lancer jigs are my go to for lings and rock fish. Salmon hit them too. Big hammers and gulp grub tails were a were good the tails break off too easily

Thanks! Walmart. The whole thing was $22.50. Got a cheap rubberized net and put blaze orange duck tape on it. It’s survived 15+ coho, a big king, a small halibut, and several largish lingcod and still going strong.

Why cant you keep wild coho? Which salmon species and origins can you keep?

Depends on the marine area. Wild retention was closed at the time I was in marine area 4. I use the Fish Washington app to verify what I can keep where I am.

What do you think about using larger lures to lessen your rockfish bycatch? I have been lingcod fishing the in the Sound with two types of lures now. One small rubber squid on a lead jig head, and one comparatively larger flounder pounder on a larger lead jig head. With the squid, I was catching way more rockfish

That definitely makes sense. I’ve can say that I’ve tried lures pretty similar to the flounder pounder and still caught big rockfish. I’ll do some research. I’m doubtful that you can eliminate the risk since they’re both super aggressive and inhabit the same water. I really like the idea though.

Hi there, what rod and grubs do you use ? I am in the market for a kayak jigging rod.

I put a ton of content into the description. But the tldr is that I don’t really like either rod for lingcod. The one I caught it one is any ugly stick tiger elite rated for 50-100 lb test. It’s too heavy for lings imho. The grubs are Gulp 8”. Most colors should work but I was using New Penny.
