I took a game design class in middle school, and we used game maker. 1 game I decided to make the music. It was basically only chords, but then everyone in the entire class decided to make all their music too, but no one knew how to. So everyone used the google music creator, created patterns with the notes, and every song sounded terrible. Plus everyone had their speakers on full blast, so you could hear for an entire class just random violin notes. It was the best class I've ever taken to this day

When you start running out of ideas for games so you make sequels of sequels:
@SnailPacedDev
@SnailPacedDev 5 жыл бұрын
It's not the ideas that are lacking, it is the methods to accomplish them. Games you have already made are an easier starting point as you understand what you need to some extent to make the game and what improvements could be made based on what you have learned.

My first game was also based on that same street racing demo from Game Maker. I basically re-skinned it with a first airplane flight theme and uploaded it to ModDB as "Wright Flyer." It's still available to this day, but is definitely not my best work. xD It's so funny to see such a similar experience here. And yeah, Game Maker Studio has evolved quite significantly from the Game Maker days. While drag and drop is still an option, it's a lot more code oriented today. However, one thing I think even original Game Maker did very well was teach concepts of object oriented programming. Between Game Maker, and then being taught Java later, OOP really is second nature to me. While others have often struggled to get a good grasp on it. Also I love the Microsoft word art in Mr Pac 4!

I can definitely relate to this, and some of these games really remind me of my early GM projects. I started using Game Maker back in 2000 myself, and since then I've studied quite a bit of programming as well, but it's always just remained a hobby. I still have a few of my earlier games saved, but most of them have unfortunately been lost, and just like you, I've also made a ton of different visualizations and whatnot. I just wish I had saved more games from back when I started, some of them were actually decent, and often very creative. Oh well.

man, you gave me that nostalgia when i was making gamemaker games lemme share my story :D i was just 10yo and that was my first encounter with gamemaker. i was trying to figure out how operate it. the only thing i had was the so called "index" aka help in gamemaker, because we didnt have internet back then. i also took one of the example games and modified them to learn the basics my early stages of coding seem hilarious now. i knew what "if" was, but i didnt know about "else" so i was trying to come up with ways how to get around that when i needed it i had one project on which i was working on over a year and learnt a lot because of it, sadly i had to scrap it, because the code was unmaintainable when i was at highschool i made few games in XNA .NET, which were on a whole new level of quality. it had graphics shaders, effects, sounds, the game itself was an RTS... ye, that was my big breakthrough back then now, i work with unity. it s a one hell of a project i have in works right now and i just got back to it after several pauses with the knowledge i gained from my job as a programmer (here is a vid from few years back: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqfKgoKnmJeBg8U) (if you want to see some of the projects which i dared to publish on my tumblr... here: wictimcz.tumblr.com you can see for yourself :D PS: if you want to run Grid Void or Subject_P3 you need to find the XNA redist link and install that)

Games and visualizations... that’s what I make! Your stuff is very impressive, I especially love the chaos equations. I love star cruiser 2! I made similar space shooters as my early projects. No bosses though, though there was a framework set up in my python code but it was so messy I never bothered beyond a test boss

You have no idea how lucky you were to have gamemaker (Thanks to Mark Overmars). I just had a C64 and I had to do machine language to get any performance for games. Still I wrote about 5 or 6 games when I was young (between 9 and 14). One was even more advanced than any of these. Later we got C and even later actionscript and it was heaven. So I kind of missed out on awkward gamemaker phase. I was so used to doing everything myself, I never saw the use. Until Flash came along.
