Thanks Sam, a very fair and well reasoned review. As you were wondering, the tiny etched parts on the bogies are the handbrake on/off indicators.

Be very careful how you store the Revolution wagon, you wouldn't want to have the flask cover fall off and irradiate your collection. 😉

Nice review and fair and balanced as usual. You probably have an entirely new episode to do a show on "duplicate releases by different companies." It is a pro and con, and I see your point, but others, as well. Nuclear Flask transporters seem to have become a rage, especially in the UK, based on the hundreds of channels I have viewed the last couple years who show their new wagons. It is no surprise each of the companies are going to try quickly jump the bandwagon. In the Euro trains I model (with some UK stuff), the Big 3 companies in HO (Märklin/Trix, Piko, Roco), as well as many smaller companies, often release identical classes of loco and rolling stock in the same year or within a year of each other. Especially highly anticipated models. In 2018, both Märklin and Piko announced the release of the ICE4, the newest and most anticipated train of the German High-speed fleet. Piko rushed theirs to market in 2020 first, to great initial acclaim, but year-later reviews were less positive, though still good. It was also true 1:87 scale. Märklin delayed theirs for a production problem, so it did not see shelves until 2021. It was also in a reduced 1:93.5 scale but with a few more clever functions in the decoder. Sales for both were brisk and successful. So it is possible two companies can release similar or identical products and succeed. On the flip side, as you said, other desired models are not being released. Companies often play it quiet until they have reached a point, so by the time they announce a new product, it is too late to cancel it if someone else announces they are doing it first. I guess it would be great if companies shared what they were working on down the road to avoid crossovers, but they avoid that for competitive reasons. Still, a great debate that you would handle well in your style, as it is not just a UK but worldwide hobby-wide issue.

Hi, great honest in-depth review of a great wagon, although Accurascale messed up with their choice of batteries to use, the fact you have to get your own is not good in my opinion I prefer the Accurascale model, rotating axel boxes is a cool addition to the model, the cast chassis on the Accurascale is also better than the plastic chassis Revolution have offered, I do like the underside of the Revolutions model. Both model blow the overpriced old model Bachmann have been selling for years which is inferior compared to the 2 new offering’s, thanks for sharing.

The Fixed tail lamp on the Accurascale while nice, does have some disadvantages. Quite often nuclear flasks are push pulled with a Loco on each end. Having a fixed tail lamp means running the model in loco hauled form only. As modding push pull with a fixed lamp, means not on the back of the train is against regulation. A removable lamp is actually better from an accuracy point of you.

Blimey. Who'd have thought AS would have been given a run for it's money! The working light on the AS version is redundant if you decide to run the wagon(s) prototypically top & tailed. We are spoilt for choice. Great forensic test as always. Thanks Sam.
@lindaoffenbach
@lindaoffenbach 11 ай бұрын
Oh well, always good to have choices Sam instead of one brand monopolising 😉 Close call here really. We would most probably go for the AS for several reasons. Firstly, we actually don't like too much free rolling all that greatly; makes shunting / coupling more problematic, and a higher chance of derailment is inherently a factor. Next, metal usually is a winner for us. The tail light is nice although not necessarily decisive. But lastly, R's buffers pointing a tad upwards have bothered us immediately, and once you notice something, it's difficult to unsee. However, close call. Cheerio.

Mukka... These wagons, like all modern day vehicles, do not have vacuum brakes! They are air brake pipes in the accessories bag chum. The white wheels on the bogies are handbrake wheels. And I was impressed with the red/green handbrake "on/off" indicator on the bogie sides as well. The padlocks won me over as well; excellent detail all over and better than Accurascale. Good review. Cheers from Oz. Gaz

Funny what you say about product duplication: in early days the NYC&HR S motor was made by... marklin, bing, lionel (all with multiple variations) American Flyer and Ives. The T motor American Flyer, Lionel, and Ives, Dorfan having a variant in a PRR design, boucher doing a tunnel motor which was a curious choice as they'd been withdrawn by 1910, and American Flyer did do a couple of variations of the New Haven. Seeing as throughout the twenties there were no steamers made by the major manufacturers (apart from the cheapest lines in 0) it was pretty much an electric outline locomotive, or maybe nothing at all in gauge 2 (standard/wide) Quite a few manufacturers did their own versions of the bipolar. Lionel at one point had 5 variations of the S motor at one point, all in production at the same time. Nice review :)

For me I prefer the accurascale. Feels so nice in the hand and the extra detail of revolution's wouldnt be overly seen when its on the track. Especially when looking at photos of the real thing you really cant notice all that silver on the underside. Rotating axle boxes on AC's is a lovely touch which I do notice when running. But what really steals it for me is that flashing tail lamp. It just adds so much when you are running it. I also feel ac has slightly better value for money due to the extra features and metal construction

So happy to see this review and, given I recommended product and manufacture, glad it’s a good outcome! FYI The “N” in Revolution is related to the fact that they started out with N gauge products and indeed there is an N gauge version of this model coming. I was talking to the owners this weekend at the International N gauge show where I picked up my latest pre-order N gauge wagons from them (ironically, developed in conjunction with Accurascale!). Great review that ties in very well with my experiences of the brand so far. Best.

Yet another great review, I think I would buy 2 and save the £10 and go for the Revolution then add a bit more weight inside the easy to remove Flask 😅
@briancooper562
@briancooper562 11 ай бұрын
The weight issue is easy to rectify, add extra weights (depleted uranium would be good, denser then lead). The cover should fit over the load or over the retract possition for loading, hence the loose fit. I am not sure but the top and tailing is due to lack of head shunts and run round loops at facilities handling the waste rather then traction issues. It also gets round security issues of leaving wagons unattached to locomotives in secured facilities.

@williamsquires3070
@williamsquires3070 11 ай бұрын
Hi Sam. Try putting a bit more weight under the cover and see if it still derails on the points; it may very well be too light. As for derailing on points, the top two reasons are: 1) wheel gauge (which Sam checked), and 2) problems with the truck (bogie) pivoting where it meets the actual railcar (wagon.) HTH.
@mariebcfhs9491
@mariebcfhs9491 11 ай бұрын
The issue I believe was probably because the two bogies on a wagon are actually quite different, one can tilt freely from side to side while one rests on sliders that restrict its tilting to basically zero. This is done to allow the car to follow badly laid and canted tracks without being wobbly on straight level tracks. (called 3 point suspension or something like that). So on bad tracks the wagon will be more likely to derail going one direction than the other.

To me, nothing is more frustrating than a loco or wagon, that derails on points, or rolling stock when being pushed. I have a storage yard which also acts as a shunting yard with Kadee auto uncouplers. I need to be sure that shunting can be done without derailments. I back some rolling stock into sidings which are inaccessible with my hands and if I get problems I have to use a grabber. I will always go for reliability.

I think it's a case of 'you pays your money and you makes your choice ' on these Sam, I bought two AS twin packs and got a 10% discount, which brings the price match closer.... also I like the weight of the AS over lighter rolling stock, ( after all, you're not going to have too many in a train with two ( or more) locomotives on ), as for the loose hood, well, I'd rather leave them alone, as I have never seen an open one, and as I read the AS instructions on how to release the hood for fitting batteries two times , over a coffee, rather than simply ram sausage fingers in there, I have easily managed to remove the AS hood without damage. and as for the NEM sockets and couplers, squeezing the prongs on the coupler together with needle -nosed pliers works a treat, and is mandatory on some high-end European stock, it also means they stay in the NEM socket too, rather than pull out with a heavy train or stupid acceleration, and after all, how often does one swap coupler types? Final choice, if you want an odd number, Revolution, even number AS.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 11 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot for sharing! Yes that's true on the weight actually - doesn't matter too much if you're only running in small numbers. I also managed to get the Accurascale hood on/off without breaking once... but for filming purposes I had to do it a handful of times, and the hook did break. As for squeezing the prongs, this did not work for me - the NEM pockets themselves were malformed/badly moulded and the couplings were absolutely stuck fast... I had to pull them out in pieces. Whoever assembled it must have known about the issue, as they must have been a devil to insert! But sure, it's very close between the two... you could certainly make a case for either!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Seems to be plenty of room in this model to add extra weight inside the "nuclear flask" container which hopefully would correct the derailment issue over the points. Good review and nice to see the comparison. I think it's a great model and love the padlocks but for me performance is a 3 star and the grade is B. You simply can't have a piece of rolling stock derailing. It's so basic. That being said a single wagon for such a specialist wagon is a great shout. I can see many getting both. I have a couple of sets of the Alcan tank wagons on order so hope they do resolve this but overall looking very promising.

In my opinion definitely the Accurascale is the better of the two, I own both of them, but as your video dose mentioned about the Revolution derailing, this is especially annoying because my layout has dozens of points work, my railway is Heavily based on the Bridgwater area. Also with Accurascale FNA you get 2 in the pack and that makes it more easier to make up rakes of this. So overall definitely the Accurascale

The accurascale starting earlier would of been pushing the wagon against the other and bachmann 37 with no where to go but off the rails. Swap the locos around and try again.... So the accurascale is pulling or take the bachmann off and try again. . Great review.

Well what a great model. Revolution would get my vote. Reason, the nuclear flasks are moved when one is full, there are not too many workings where 2 are run. I think having a choice is good, but yes, as others point out, getting to be a bit like the late 90’s where the manufacturers ( vitrains, Hornby, Bachman Etc ) duplicated a few trains, albeit with different numbers. There is always going to be a little duplication, but to be honest, Accurascale and Revolution are not really going to worry. On a lot of layouts, nuclear flasks won’t make an appearance. But the choice is out there, you pays yer money and takes yer pick. 🤣🤪

I think duplication is essential and a very good thing. If the entire industry agreed that no one would make the same model as anyone else, everyone could charge literally whatever they wanted for even mildly special items and you would have to pay it. If it weren't for competition, Bachmann would be charging $500 for an 0-4-0.

On a pure exploitation point of view, my preference goes to the Revolution due to its lighter weight and its more free rolling qualities, plus the better couplings. And you have the bonus of a lower price, more details and a single-unit sales conditionning. The only drawback I see is the hood, which could have been kept in place with judiciously placed magnets. On the wizz factor, Accurascale wins with the live blinking light at the end, but it's also an excellent model overall.

Did you try pushing the Revolution wagon with the same loco as the Accurascale wagon? If not, it might be a coupling issue, not a wheel / rail interface issue.
@blackjockofmangertonpele

Isn't the flashing lamp strictly irrelevant anyway on this wagon? More often than not, the wagon isn't at the rear of the train, especially when the flask train is top and tailed (as the box rear photo).

I am wondering if the reason why your cover came off was because you need to clip the little hooks over the little pegs? Those look very delicate and thus might explain the warning notice.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 11 ай бұрын
Yeah that's right, the front end is held by the hooks... but the back end is still loose, so I decided not to re-engage the hooks for fear of them being broken! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

As they are usually top and tailed, the tail lamp is mostly moot anyway.

How can you give a 4 out of 5 for performance on a wagon that derailed every time you tested it on a point? I wonder if you had pre-ordained your preference?

The Accrascale opening flask is NOT designed to show any "detail" inside but is purely functional for installation of the battery. So your comment about the revolution trains model been better is nonsense.

Seems like the Revolution FNDA is too light. A derailing nuclear flask wagon is never good, especially with an insecure “lid”! The AS for the price difference seems better value with it being of composite construction plastic/ die cast, proper bearings, working tail light. As for the brass paint padlocks I’d get a brush and tin of paint.

Didn't Bachmann bring out a nuclear flask wagon over 5 years ago, too,to add to the mix?
@davidstrains4910
@davidstrains4910 11 ай бұрын
Bachmann did bring out a nuclear flask wagon but the main difference between bachmanns one is it depicts it as the FNA which mainly caters for people who have their layouts set in the 70s up to 2010, accurascale and revolution have both done the FNA-d which while similar in appearance are mainly to be used by people who have their layouts depicting present day.

It's astonishing to see two models of the same item from different manufacturers where you can't even tell they have different origins (unless you pick them up and have a good close look). On the screen they even seem to have identical colours. Let's face it, they're both great value compared to Bachmann's £50 four wheeled brake van, which is frankly an attempt to extract the liquid biological waste products - and I'm happy that Accurascale can justify their extra cost through beefier construction. I do wonder if the big boys have set themselves on course for oblivion in the next few years, when what you would assume are economies of scale translate into higher prices. By the way, I'm not personally unhappy that the Accurascale version is a little less free running so long as they are smooth rolling; a little bit of resistance can stop a train of model wagons from hunting. I'd be happy with either version, but they're completely the wrong era for me.

A light plastic wagon costs £33, the top drops off, it can't go over points, but it gets 4 stars for performance, and 5 stars for value?

The painted padlocks would win it for me. Fortunately, the LNWR in 1915 had very few nuclear flasks, so I can pass on these.

How fast are nuclear flask trains allowed to go? I know thay they ran a class 46 into an empty flask at 100 mph to show the strength but how fast do they travel in reality?

The Accurascale tail-light, whilst being a great feature dies not flash realistically. It comes on then it goes off whilst in real life these tail-lamps flash like a strobe. Perhaps I'm being too picky.....?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 11 ай бұрын
Ahh interesting - that's worth knowing... I suppose sticklers for detail would say that if they're going to the trouble of having that feature, and having customers pay for it, then it ought to be right! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Not sure how you can highly rate a wagon that won't go over points. Have you tried adding weight to see if that works? Make it the same weight as the Accurascale,
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 11 ай бұрын
Yeah maybe I was generous there - I'm wondering whether it was the light weight, as the gauge/bogie movement is all absolutely fine... I'd expect weight would fix it, will test! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
