Oh, man. That is absolutely heartbreaking. I'm so sorry they did that to you and your amazing sounding book. That's one of the main reasons I chose to self-publish. Complete control. That premise was awesome! Maybe you can rework it enough to put it out there the right way. All best to you.

Man, I hate that happened to you. It seems like the publisher/editors didn't have enough faith in your work to sell, so they forced it into a market it wasn't originally intended for. Was it a renowned publisher that did this to you, might I ask?

It was an offshoot from one of the big publishers that no longer exists. It was eventually bought by penguin random house.
