I've been enjoying your channel for several years now. I started mountain biking when I was 62 years old, at that time I lived in Arizona. I was an avid road cyclist before then now a converted mountain biker. I'm over 70 and I bought my first E-mountain bike a year ago. It's a Trek powerfly. I wasn't sure if I'd like it when I bought it but I absolutely love it because I can keep up with my 34-year-old son. I mostly ride in the Eco mode, the eMBT mode I only use for very steep climbs. For my age I get a very good workout in the Eco mode. When I have it in the eMBT mode I just kind of fly along and I don't get much work out. I never use turbo. It seems to me that you rode in the eMBT mode most of the time.

You can get a good work out with an E-MTB., but you ride it just like a normal MTB using your gears. Then you select the assist mode to make it as easy or hard as you want. E-MTB is mainly used for technical climbing. Eco, Tour and Turbo uses 3 sensors Speed, cadence, torque then balances to your riding. EMTB uses the torque sensor only which makes it perfect for technical climbing.

I am fortunate enough to have both decent emtb and mtb. When I got the emtb, I was quite thrilled and used it a lot for the first 6 months. After that "honeymoon" period, I have been riding mostly my MTB. EMTB is quite fun, but I do not get same feeling of achivement after EMTB ride compared to MTB/road bike. I also noticed that my FTP on road bike dropped quite a lot in 6 months riding the EMTB instead of MTB. We have EMTB Strava segments in my area, but for some reason those are not as fun to try out compared to MTB ones. So nowadays it is mostly MTB & road biking for me and EMTB for recovery, trail discovery and group rides where all the others have EMTBs also. I would not have EMTB as my only bike as main reasons I ride is to keep fit and have challenges.

Motorcycles are fun! Friends of mine ride them like crazy in the mountains and deserts of Central Oregon. But I do not want them on our mountain bike trails. I guess they are OK on the logging roads, but they say "no motorized vehicles allowed". We also have fresh water lakes that say, "no motors allowed" and that means no motors allowed - gas or electric! I ride my Commencal FS Meta for the thrill of the challenge going up as well as down. I don't curse the roots of the Oregon Coast Range but see them as test of my skills and stamina, and I continue to build them both. I am 69 and my buddy is 67 and today we set out with a goal, found a logging area closed and ended up on the most challenging paths in my years of biking. And we loved it!!! Yeah - a motorcycle/ebike would have covered more miles per hour, but is that what we are looking for? And actually, an ebike could not make it over some of those roots that we had to lift our bikes over on the steep uphill.

I like the idea of eMTB’s especially for older people or people with knee problems and stuff like that. Or if you live in a mountainous area with very long climbs and no ski lifts. But I think for normal trail riding they just really aren’t needed and are actually dangerous IMO. They are much faster than most of the normal bike traffic on trails and most likely can’t stop as quick as normal trail bikes. I’ve been almost run over multiple times by people riding eMTBs around blind corners where I’m going and they are moving twice as fast as I am. I also don’t really think trails are built to withstand the abuse an eMTB could put on a trail with the harder, faster riding that people can do on them. Just my 2 cents

So who are these bikes for? Most typical XC/Trail riders embrace the grind. That's how you get a workout. There's also the satisfaction of conquering rough and difficult terrain. Don't see them switching to e-bikes. Conversely, I can see downhill/enduro riders liking these in places where they don't have access to a lift and want to get in as many rides as possible. Then again, are these e-bikes made to be pushed that hard? There's also the issue of weight and distribution affecting handling characteristics as compared to regular bikes. So at this point, I seem to have more questions than answers. Perhaps I need to get my hands on one...or perhaps you can give us some further insight now that you've taken a ride on this thing for yourself...

Who are they for? As far as the bike industry is concerned, anyone with deep pockets. As far as eBike advocates are concerned, the elderly and disabled. Great video and I'm sure most of the responses will be from the more 'mature' [old people don't ride MTB] demographic. Like others, there's no science about reduced torque in your legs as you age. It's just life. But when you can power through ascents to get to the fun parts, an ebike maintains the excitement from earlier days. Bought a Rocky Mountain Powerplay A50 and don't miss my Cube Reaction Pro, although I still use it for straight cardio. The Niner turbo mode is called ludicrous in Rocky Mountain lingo and my son always laughs when I tell him I never get out of it. Oh, and I never feel guilty when I fly by someone on a climb.

Too Fast. My fear is ebikes move so fast, increasing the odds of a bad crash with walker or biker. That is what will get us knocked off our local trails. Walkers already think we go too fast. Years ago a downhill biker (all geared up and shuttling) on a local trail ran into a woman hiker and her 5 year old child. Killed her son. That trail is now restricted use to all mountain bikers. A few weeks ago, a fat out of shape middle age man ran me off the trail going up hill on his ebike (and laugh about it). I watched how fast he went across the rest of the trail (with almost zero effort) and realized that these ebikes have the potential to be the end of mtb on my local trail. eBikes makes sense to me for a handicaped rider or the eldery. But you are in great shape. And most of the ebike riders I've seen just want to go fast. I get that. But buy a motocycle and ride on moto trails if you want to go that fast. Bike companies have been pushing these ebikes for years because the prices start higher and the margins are bigger. As a community, we have to draw the line somewhere. Are we going to allow mopeds, motocycles, and cars on our trails too? At what cost?

Here in CT, e-bikes are banned on singletrack trails on public land. In many areas, mtb advocates had to work really hard to get access to trails and convince land owners and managers that non-motorized bikes don't impact the trails any more than hikers. The fear is that e-bikes will be viewed as "motorized" and all bikes could face the types of widespread bans we saw in the early days of mountain biking. I have nothing against e-mtbs, but I think the industry did a shitty job of rolling them out without any type of publicity or educational campaign to show land managers that they have no more impact than regular bikes.

@ClintGibbs4 жыл бұрын
@@thegefster1988 eBikes have different settings that you can control with the head unit. There are four different settings on this bike. Eco mode gives the lowest amount of pedal assist.

Strava has ebikes as separate group.

Wow everyone's got an opinion on this one. Look at it this way, if you have an hour or two to workout would you rather do 3 laps at your local 8-10 mile single track or 1 lap with the same amount of 'workout'? If you are sessioning a local jump line where you have to climb back up, by lap 3 or 4 it gets dangerous as you are jumping tired, on the ebike you can do 8 laps ( you do have to get used to the extra weight). So i think there is a place for them. Should you be riding at a crowded trailhead? I think no as your speed would create situations on every uphill. If you can afford to have two bikes having an ebike is a blast but it doesn't 'replace' your regular mtb.

In my opinion the E bikes don't do any more damage to the trail then a regular bike. Most of the damage to the trail is done by skidding. I remember we used to go by the rule "ride it, don't slide it". Maybe once you get to fit and can ride a xc bike too fast, you should be banned from the trails too?? Bottom line is there should be one rule at the trail head..."don't be an asshole", I see more assholes using Strava then on E bikes, but not all strava users are assholes for sure. Love my Levo, opens up lots of new routes for me out here in Rural Nevada. Normally my heart rate is about the same as my acoustic bike rides, because I am always trying to see how steep of terrain I can climb (old mining roads, wild horse trails and some motorcycle trails). When I am wore out I can still go out and climb the mountain bike trail ( 5 miles, 2300 ft of gain) behind my house on the E bike using just the amount of assist to put me in whatever heart rate zone I pick. Also they are perfect to bring riding partners together, when I ride with a 30 yr. old racer friend of mine I ride the E bike, I set my assist to just stay ahead of him, he loves chasing me so he can be on a training ride. Not sure about the niner E bike, but with the levo you can set each of the 3 settings on the handlebar anywhere from 10% to 100% I have my settings set at 15%. 35% and 80%. You can easily change those 3 settings from a app on your phone. They even have a setting where you connect a heartrate monitor and you can set a heart rate, the bike will give you enough assist to maintain that heart rate.

Maybe when I turn 70.... I wonder how it would hold up after say 3 years of riding 3x a week. Would it be a money pit? Would battery last? Is it able to be ridden on most trails? What about just getting a motorcycle as it may be cheaper. Just some thoughts. Great video!

I am 69 and rode my Commencal Meta up and down trails for 12 miles today with my 67 yr buddy. 4 weeks ago we rode up (from 300ft) to 3000 ft McCullock Peak for 21 miles for 6 hours. An ebiker roared past us as we moved to the side. We do not plan on getting a motorbike for some time, thank you. And we are having a blast!!! P.S. We are in the Oregon Coast Range and the roots were out to grab us today!!!

You should feel a little guilty riding a motorbike on a bicycle trail. The jury is still out on whether these things should be allowed on regular mountain bike trails. Here is Michigan e-bikes are forbidden on most trails.

Wrong and wrong. Ebikes are here to stay, so bow down. Or at least kneel. The one in this video is quite crude and primitive compared to 2019+ Levo or Levo SL (which Clint should have used as his first ebike example).
@rlsedition4 жыл бұрын
@@HarryKuloh Ebikes have their place, in urban settings and out West, where trail distances tend to be long. Clint said it right, though, that he was having fun, but wasn't getting a workout on that Ebike. I ride bikes like that as well - they're called motorcycles. Oh, and how much was that Levo SL? $13,525.
