My first song using LUNA -

I'm trying out the brand new music production software LUNA from ‪@UniversalAudio‬ and making my first song with it. No hardware instruments this time, except for my voice.

UA is calling it the Luna Challenge, but I broke two of the check marks in the Luna Challenge guidelines: I didn't end up using the Moog synth, although I tried, and didn't think it was a good fit for this song. And I didn't make a layered Shape sound… also tried but didn't find a use for it in this song.
All in all, I must say I'm super impressed. This feels like a place where I want to hang out and spend time. I like it. And for a v1 software it's insane how well it works. They've really done a great job with it.

When you ran out of DSP, could you have frozen or flattened tracks to get some free DSP back? I am interested in the UAD ecosystem, but it is quite expensive to get into... but running out of CPU in Ableton is a big frustration currently, so I like the idea of offloading to DSP so I can continue to smoothly do overdubs while leaving live plugins on different tracks for tweaking. I wonder how much DSP I’d need to really make the change worth it, though... might not be affordable...

Freezing tracks is definitely high on the todo list for UAD. Not sure if they have made it into reality just yet. Haven’t kept uptodate.

Wonderful example of recording with Luna.. does Luna give you access to any more plugins from UA? I only own a handful due to $ constants. Do you own many or all of those plugs? Can one use plugins from other makers?

Yeah, I’m a trackpad user. So used to using a trackpad after decades of laptopping. That Bluetooth trackpad is very nice. I suspect one could try using a trackpad app for your phone to try the concept.

If I understand correctly, the main selling point of UA's hardware, compared to other audio interfaces, is that it can offload some effect processing from the computer. And the main point of Luna is that it's like a really minimal DAW except it uses external effects. I guess I don't really get the appeal. I keep a CPU meter running at all times on my computers, and even on my old notebook, using a DAW never even gets close to maxing out the CPU. It hums along quietly with the CPU underclocked, and still only uses 10% or less while I'm working on songs. So I'm not really sure why I'd want to switch to a less-capable DAW in order to reduce the CPU load a bit. I can definitely see the point of having effects built into an audio interface... it's super handy. But I'm not really sure why Luna exists.

ToyKeeper I just started using Luna in the past few weeks. Most of its appeal is in the fact that everything operates with pretty much zero latency and it’s a very similar feel to working on with an analog desk + hardware + tape machine. I’m definitely drinking the UAD coolaid when it comes to the quality of the plug-ins, but they really do sound better than 90# of the stuff on the market - Valhalla, Sound Toys, and Fabfilter are pretty comparable imo. My basic workflow with Luna is to use it like a tape machine - recording my synths and drum machines through the uad preamps, channel strips and compressors. I made edits and arrange in Ableton. I then export the stems back to Luna for a final mix down.

Cool, thanks for elaborating on that. I guess what I don't understand is... why tie those effects to a brand new DAW, instead of making a VST which uses the hardware for processing? That way, people could continue to use whatever they already like, and get the benefits of the hardware without having to completely change their workflow. People are going to export stuff to their DAW anyway, so why not save them the trouble and make it work inside their platform of choice?

ToyKeeper I agree tying the instruments to the platform is dumb for sure. That said the free stuff you get is top notch. I would never pay $299 for a Moog clone or piano plugin.
