You could react to other songs by them. All of those bands are pretty good in my opinion. I am also getting into black metal slowly, as I never enjoyed it before. The more I listen to it, the better it is. You could also react to more classic Death Metal. Would be awesome!

The “poor audio quality” has nothing to do with a bad version. It’s a conscious choice by most bands of the era to eschew conventionally “good” mixing and production. Instead, a lot of the music was self recorded and mixed, with a deliberate attempt at a raw sound.
@Ozzpot
@Ozzpot 3 жыл бұрын
True. I prefer it to be well produced these days, but I was super into the raw sound back then. Made it feel like something underground, taboo, special. Total rejection of the mainstream. Something to scare the norms away I guess.

As "Necrobutcher" the bass player of the pioneering black metal band "Mayhem" once said; "We are not here to look pretty, we are here to make the music we want and love." It is basically the foundation of what Black Metal is, not about the glory or money or fame. It's about provoking the masses and give people the freedom to express themselves, the ability to think for themself and not to become famous.

Don't forget the middle finger throw to the pestilence that is religion and ESPECIALLY christianity.
@MrBern91
@MrBern91 3 жыл бұрын
@@vonbl3 No, it's not. That was merely a response by the black metal heads to the fact that the christians got butthurt because they made "Satanic" or "Pagan" music which they did not like. None of the originals made the music to piss them off, it just happened and then there was one moron who took the opposite side to the extreme.
@vonbl3
@vonbl3 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrBern91 You know that Bathory and Venom both literally said that they made music just to piss off christians right? It was an anti-christian thing. None of them believe in any sort of satanic entity, it was just mockery towards the brainwashed relligious people who believe in this kind of crap and a middle finger to some made up story that literally took over the world, Christianity. And if we talk about the Norwegian scene, most of the bands were pissed of that Christianity came and erased their past culture so once again, middle finger to Christianity. Also, that "fool" ur talking about did exactly just that, thought for himself. You're just being hypocrite, we all think differently, it just so happens that his beliefs are more extreme than the average guy's SO by default, him doing those things was exactly doing that, thinking for himself. You all love these type of "thinking for urself" and "freedom of speech" but the moment it's out of your boundries or under ur moral standards, it's wrong. Heads off ur asses, snow droppings. And ALSO, Isn't the "It is basically the foundation of what Black Metal is, not about the glory or money or fame. It's about provoking the masses and give people the freedom to express themselves, the ability to think for themself and not to become famous." one of the main beliefs in like 6 Metal Genres and 10 Punk ones? You're making it sound like it's something unique to Black Metal when in fact, there are 10+ sub-genres that do that but better. I think you're misunderstanding the meaning and point of Black Metal. The "no money, doing what I love" thing can be found in literally any extreme music sub-genre. Nobody starts a Slamming Brutal Death Metal band hoping they'll get famous and rich. Black Metal as a whole was a movement against Christianity and then later on in the '90s people started to add more of their individual substance to the music. Some bands were handing their tribute to their past nordic culture, some still did the whole fuck relligion thingy, some were actually theistic Satanists and thru their music they were sharing their love for the unholy entitiy and trying to infest the world with their diabolic beliefs, some of them talked about depression and self emotions, some of em were basically 'fuck the world" and nothing more, some of them were literally standing for nothing but they just like the music, some of them ACTUALLY had money and "fame' in their mind when started the band, some expressed their extreme political views and many more things, I could go on forever.

The thing with many black metal songs that intrigues me so much is their elusiveness. They come off as harsh and simple when you first listen, but then after awhile, they start to reveal themselves and unravel a true, unique, and cold beauty. It parallels their message. The elusiveness of the art mimics the elusiveness of the worldview of black metal. Of hidden beauty in nature and humanity and the cosmos, of the infinite coldness of a perfect reality.

"not the best quality" "it lacks structure" - yes, both of these are basic requirements for old school black metal
@HideousConformity
@HideousConformity 2 жыл бұрын
The 'lack of structure' is a common thing in both Black Metal and Death Metal. Both genres have a tendency to break or ignore rules in music. For example, when it comes to lyrics it's relatively rare to see songs using the standard verse and chorus structure. There's pretty much only one rule they are virtually guaranteed to follow: only use minor scales.

The man behind this band stabbed his friend to death and burned down multiple churches in Norway in the 90s and even used a picture of the remains of the burnt church as an album cover for his ep Aske. Many of the people in the Norwegian black metal scene did similar crimes in the 90s to avenge their pagan ancestors.

This is one of the "True Norwegian Black Metal" pioneers. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with what you said about the production. It was roughly produced very much on purpose to encompass the passion and brutality of black metal. It's meant to make people uncomfortable, using a lot of tritones (the devil's notes...look that up, pretty interesting stuff) and demonic sounding vocals. I love Emperor. You should check out Ihsahn's (lead singer) solo work. I recommend something off his latest album. You'll be shocked, lol.

Emperor expanded and grew with each successive new album. Their previous EP was self titled and on a split with Enslaved that featured a much more scooped out mid range and therefore "less noisy" but still chaotic. Their first demo release was not even stereo and most likely recorded on a 4 track cassette. In The Nightside Eclipse rerecorded two songs of which was less scooped, raw and noisier. Their follow up album had perfected and tweeked their guitar tones with a more defined heavy distortion that was more capable of delivering its lead guitars and rhythm guitars with more decipherable precision of which they kept improving upon with each new album. The whole band perfected their performance as they channelled sounds of fast chaos as complex guitar rhythm chord progressions not heard before so it only sounds chaotic to new listeners. Perform the riffs unplugged yourself and hear the perfect complexity of entertwining notes and chord progressions. Ihsahn set the bar for technical/progressive blackmetal to which many others came afterwards. They were once my favorite band, but now there are nearly millions of songs available to choose from and so I have many dozens of favorite metal bands across many dozens of metal genres.
