I don't know specifically about MAD's mocking O'Connor, but I'm guessing it was just part of the backlash she received for calling out the Church and the Pope for the cover up of the rampant child abuse, molestation and rape by priests and other Church authorities, and the Church's protection, for many years, of the perpetrators. She did this in her appearance on SNL, which is probably why SNL came to mind for you in connection with her. For telling a truth people didn't want to hear, she was cruelly and hatefully reviled, mocked, threatened and derided-- figuratively crucified-- ironically receiving the figurative version, for her truth telling, as Jesus literally received for his. Here's an excerpt about it from a New York Times article: July 27, 2023 Americans began to grapple with a nationwide epidemic of child abuse in Catholic parishes and other religious organizations in 2002, after a landmark Boston Globe investigation revealed a pattern of misdeeds and cover-ups in Boston that went back decades. Ten years earlier, Sinead O’Connor became a pop culture pariah in the United States for an on-air protest intended to raise awareness of the same problem. The backlash to her actions - tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” and then shouting “Fight the real enemy!” - was swift. Prominent Americans, including celebrities like Madonna and Joe Pesci, denounced her. Protesters brought a 30-ton steamroller to crush her cassettes in Rockefeller Center. Catholic leaders were outraged, including some who were forced to resign years later for their roles in covering up abuse. Many people in America derided her as “somebody looking for attention,” said Cahir O’Doherty, the arts editor of The Irish Voice, an Irish diaspora newspaper in New York City. “It never occurred to anyone that maybe she had a point,” he added. www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/nyregion/sinead-oconnor-childhood-abuse.html#:~:text=Ten%20years%20earlier%2C%20Sinead%20O,enemy!%E2%80%9D%20%E2%80%94%20was%20swift. p.s. I think she's more beautiful with very short hair, which, imho, is often the case for people with very beautiful, or very interesting (or both) features.

Her appearance on SNL when she tore up the Popes photo on TV and openly ousted the catholic church is the reason SNL continues to make fun of her. 😢 they ruined her life over speaking about the truth back then, hmmm sounds like today's world😢. She has an angelic voice. Very very beautiful lady. RIP Sinead.

This song was written by Prince. Made famous by Sinéad and covered beautifully by Chris Cornell. Sinéad died recently. She was a unique and amazing artist whose career suffered after she based the Catholic Church on SNL ( for priests sexual abuse cover up.) She was ahead of her time. In recent years She struggle with mental health issues exacerbated by the death of her 17 year old son to suicide last year. RIP to an amazing artist, with a powerful voice and a gentle soul.

They made fun of her because she was willing to tell truths others were not ready for. Rip up a picture of the Pope on SNL? Twenty years later we learn about clergy abuse and the Magdalene Launderies. Then there's the Bobcat Goldthwait line, "If she's not a witch, I'm a toaster!" Gone too soon to suicide. Rest in peace.

I still cry when I watch this. Her life was so sad especially after her SNL performance. She was right and as we hear more and more about the cover ups, I think she would get a different reaction today. She was a tortured soul and loosing her son to suicide made things worse. She didn’t deserve to die feeling that way.

Thank you from Ireland for your reaction☘We are mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔 Sinéad was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was keening for our Country & it is pure perfection. The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a 23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out. Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚

She was a child abuse victim and was tired of of being sexually objectified as a female performer. So she shaved her head in hopes of stopping the negative attention. Obviously, that didn’t work…she’s as beautiful as ever. Then her SNL performance made her a pariah. She got death threats etc. She told the truth but continued to be vilified. She was 100% right about exposing Catholic Church’s coverups and is owed an apology by all who taunted her. Rest in love Sinead. ❤

I still think the whole world owes her a giant apology. Unfortunately she is no longer here to hear it. She was obviously an extremely sensitive person, and I think all the gag jokes and hate that wrecked her life most very likely shortened her life. She put herself ALL THE WAY OUT THERE, and what happened back to her? Being mean to someone who can’t even see you is just plain-ass BAD. Like, DONT DO IT, okay? And do NOT listen to people who tell you to kill yourself either, okay? SHE WAS SO PRETTY. Drop-dead gorgeous! How could anyone watch her face and hear what she’s saying, then make fun of her. What was wrong with everybody?? Personally, she stunned me from the start, that first day this video came out on MTV all those years ago. And it still does. ❤️ RIP

Written and performed by Prince. There's an official VEVO video of Prince and The New Power Generation (Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U / Live at Paisley Park 1999). There are a couple other live videos of Prince performing as well. He wrote the song in 1984. I think he once used this as an example of what "covered" means - as in a song is so covered, the original artist starts to be forgotten. That said, Sinead did a beautiful rendition, and Chris Cornell's is hauntingly stunning. RIP to all three.

I remember when this came out in 1990. People were gobsmacked. As for Sinéad ripping up the Pope’s picture, she was calling him out for turning a blind eye to all the sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy…and it continued to be covered up for a LONG time until the incidents were just to frequent to ignore any more. She was RIGHT but she paid a heavy price for her bravery. Such a shame.

I think a lot of people have explained this video really well. To answer your question about a live performance, there is one in which she performs this track live at the Viña del Mar festival in Chile, shortly after Pinochet had been deposed and the Chilean people were full of hope and really vibed with her as she poured out her heart and soul on the stage. She poured so much of herself into every performance that I'm surprised there was anything of her left when she passed.

Piece of trivia - Prince was an AMAZINGLY unselfish artist. He has 6 or 7 songs of his own which were number 1 hits by other artists. Obviously this one, but others including Manic Monday by the Bengals (which, like others if I am not mistaken, he never even recorded, just wrote it and gave it to them, free of charge, because he thought they would kill it, which they obviously did).

Love what you’re doing. As an old white guy, about to turn 54, I’ve been listening to Sinead since she released her first album around 1990, along with all of the stuff you’re discovering like PRIMUS and such. Big fan of yours. I can’t help but think you’re doing your part in breaking down the racial walls in this world and seeing there are cool things about all races, especially in music. You are a light in this world.

My favorite first line ever, “It’s been seven hours, and fifteen days…” It says so much more than if it said, ‘It’s been fifteen days, and seven hours…’ because when you are that grief stricken it’s the minutes that hurt most; the days just blend together. Dam, Prince could write. But she sailed this better than he probably felt it in the first place.

She passed away in July at the age of 56. She had mental health issues her whole career. She really had a unique voice, I find it ethereal.

gorgeous version of this song, great reaction. 🙂she actually cut her hair off in a deliberate attempt to prevent her label and the industry from pitching her as an attractive young singer and selling records based on her looks. like you said, she still looked beautiful. 🙂 for me, i love a couple of live performances... "the foggy dew" w/ the chieftans, and "thank you". the latter has her on stage with her pixie cut, in a full length lace white dress...and boots. 🥰🙂 she sounds so beautiful in those recordings. her performance of "war" by bob marley on SNL is now very well known. at the time she was loathed, threatened, and her career essentially ended because she chose to use the platform to speak the truth when no one else would. she was ahead by decades. so many people / victims owe her a debt of gratitude for speaking out...she was just a kid and it cost her so much.

This song was released before she tore up the photo of the pope on SNL. It's unfortunate because she was demonized and SNL took it and made her a joke. She had a tough life but was had a beautiful voice and was an authentic person. She said what she believed.

Alot of people think she was a "pop star" because of this song but she was a punk at heart and much more of a punk than the so called punks. She spoke truth to power which is why alot of media went after her. She was amazing live and her masterpiece song was Troy - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqSsoKusoKibjdk. The best live version of Nothing Compares to You is kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHKyfK2sgZ2Xnc0 in Chile.
