I don't know specifically about MAD's mocking O'Connor, but I'm guessing it was just part of the backlash she received for calling out the Church and the Pope for the cover up of the rampant child abuse, molestation and rape by priests and other Church authorities, and the Church's protection, for many years, of the perpetrators. She did this in her appearance on SNL, which is probably why SNL came to mind for you in connection with her. For telling a truth people didn't want to hear, she was cruelly and hatefully reviled, mocked, threatened and derided-- figuratively crucified-- ironically receiving the figurative version, for her truth telling, as Jesus literally received for his. Here's an excerpt about it from a New York Times article: July 27, 2023 Americans began to grapple with a nationwide epidemic of child abuse in Catholic parishes and other religious organizations in 2002, after a landmark Boston Globe investigation revealed a pattern of misdeeds and cover-ups in Boston that went back decades. Ten years earlier, Sinead O’Connor became a pop culture pariah in the United States for an on-air protest intended to raise awareness of the same problem. The backlash to her actions - tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” and then shouting “Fight the real enemy!” - was swift. Prominent Americans, including celebrities like Madonna and Joe Pesci, denounced her. Protesters brought a 30-ton steamroller to crush her cassettes in Rockefeller Center. Catholic leaders were outraged, including some who were forced to resign years later for their roles in covering up abuse. Many people in America derided her as “somebody looking for attention,” said Cahir O’Doherty, the arts editor of The Irish Voice, an Irish diaspora newspaper in New York City. “It never occurred to anyone that maybe she had a point,” he added. www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/nyregion/sinead-oconnor-childhood-abuse.html#:~:text=Ten%20years%20earlier%2C%20Sinead%20O,enemy!%E2%80%9D%20%E2%80%94%20was%20swift. p.s. I think she's more beautiful with very short hair, which, imho, is often the case for people with very beautiful, or very interesting (or both) features.

Her appearance on SNL when she tore up the Popes photo on TV and openly ousted the catholic church is the reason SNL continues to make fun of her. 😢 they ruined her life over speaking about the truth back then, hmmm sounds like today's world😢. She was a child abuse victim and was tired of of being sexually objectified as a female performer. So she shaved her head in hopes of stopping the negative attention. Obviously, that didn’t work…she’s as beautiful as ever. Then her SNL performance made her a pariah. She got death threats etc. She told the truth but continued to be vilified. She was 100% right about exposing Catholic Church’s coverups and is owed an apology by all who taunted her. Rest in love Sinead. ❤

Thank you from Ireland for your reaction☘We are mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔 Sinéad was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was keening for our Country & it is pure perfection. The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a 23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out. Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚

She was a unique and amazing artist whose career suffered after she based the Catholic Church on SNL ( for priests sexual abuse cover up.) She was ahead of her time. They made fun of her because she was willing to tell truths others were not ready for. Rip up a picture of the Pope on SNL? Twenty years later we learn about clergy abuse and the Magdalene Launderies. Then there's the Bobcat Goldthwait line, "If she's not a witch, I'm a toaster!" Gone too soon to suicide. Rest in peace.

I still cry when I watch this. Her life was so sad especially after her SNL performance. She was right and as we hear more and more about the cover ups, I think she would get a different reaction today. She was a tortured soul and loosing her son to suicide made things worse. She didn’t deserve to die feeling that way.

This song still gives me goosebumps after all these years! I had (still have) her Lion and Cobra album. And I’ve always thought she was beautiful without the hair; her face can pull it off, and she didn’t want to be objectified, which is what most of today’s female artists seem to want. Much sexier if you don’t look like you are trying too hard! Here’s the link to the live performance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHKyfK2sgZ2Xnc0si=hQCW68YlfeoZ58rT

Piece of trivia - Prince was an AMAZINGLY unselfish artist. He has 6 or 7 songs of his own which were number 1 hits by other artists. Obviously this one, but others including Manic Monday by the Bengals (which, like others if I am not mistaken, he never even recorded, just wrote it and gave it to them, free of charge, because he thought they would kill it, which they obviously did).

My favorite first line ever, “It’s been seven hours, and fifteen days…” It says so much more than if it said, ‘It’s been fifteen days, and seven hours…’ because when you are that grief stricken it’s the minutes that hurt most; the days just blend together. Dam, Prince could write. But she sailed this better than he probably felt it in the first place.

@poloreacts27 you may also like two of her more painful songs as well. They are "Three Babies," and "I am Stretched on Your Grave." She shows her emotional range. Btw, this song was one of my late sister's and my young favourites. We both covered it karaoke, and it was played at her funeral. This video was done in one shooting, as was her recording of the track. She got black-balled from the U.S. because after singing this song on SNL, she took out a pic of the pope at the time and tore it in half on live t.v. (in protest over her being a Protestant in Northern Ireland when they were still having violence). See Also, The Cranberries song, "Zombie."

She started as a model in Ireland. She was very outspoken politically and at times protested aspects of the Catholic church which suppressed women’s rights. She felt that she wasn’t taken seriously politically bc of her beauty and being a model so she decided to shave her head in an act of protest against being judged by her beauty and not her mind. Along the way she carried this thru into her music career and came to prominence internationally with the release of “Nothing Compares 2u” which was originally written by Prince.

I know several people mentioned her ban from SNL, but more recently before her death, Dr Phil had her on his show and sent her to some sort of treatment center and filmed it all. I feel like he truly wasn't there to help her, which he rarely is, it was all about making her look as crazy as possible for ratings and I just think he is an awful human. her single tear in this video is part of what makes this video is what makes this song so memorable and so beautiful because it makes you feel her pain and it makes you feel your pain as well

As others have said, Prince wrote this but for me this cannot be sung as beautifully as she did. The tears in the video were Not scripted. She was so into the meaning of the song they just happened and were left in the video. This is another song that lives permanently on my True Icon song list like Stairway to Heaven, Tears in Heaven (Eric Clapton), Bohemian Rhapsody and In the Air Tonight.

You asked if she killed this live, well yes, she sang the song for the video in one continuous take, so except for the studio music, its a live performance.

Sinead singing directly to camera was such a good move. It makes you as the viewer feel like you're who she's talking to. You feel complicit. Brilliant.

Chris Cornell (lead singer of Soundgarden/Audioslave/Temple Of The Dog & his solo songs) did a version of this song ... worth listening to!

Her face, paired with the lyrics, makes me wanna apologize for breaking up with her....and I wasn't even the one that did it. Beautiful face and vocals. I could fall in love with her based on the video alone. The controversy surrounding Sinead O'Connor was when she tore up a pic of the pope in protest of Catholicism. Prince wrote the song, she covered it and owned it. She does have a live version where she goes all in on it. Chris Cornell did an excellent cover of it as well. As the song says: Nothing Compares....to Sinead's version.

Raise your hand if you've been advocating for Sinead since her SNL appearance? This poor woman deserved to elevated not isolated. She deserved reverence not irreverence. We do not deserve to be able to enjoy her talent because of what "we" did to her.

Sinead was an Irish singer. As soon as you hear the music, you can hear Prince Rodgers Nelson. He wrote this and said nobody else could sing it.
