Wow! Didn’t expect a Walkmen react this morning, but I’m not disappointed! One of the most under appreciated bands ever. “The Rat” is a bit heavier than their usual, but they have some incredibly powerful songs. Try “I Lost You,” “In the New Year,” or “Blue as Your Blood” next. Amazing band!!

I remember when I first moved out of my parents' house and I went to a nightclub in the city I moved to. I was sat in the corner and I heard this playing... and it's weird but I remember feeling a sense of victory when I heard this, a feeling that upon hearing this it was the rest of my life. To this day when I feel down I put this on and realise that I have vanquished whatever problems I had.

Love the Walkmen and Hamilton Leithauser’s solo stuff, incredibly under rated. For a similar era bands of this sound and feeling, I’d suggest checking out Cold War Kids “Hang Me Up To Dry” and TV On The Radio “Wolf Like Me”

The Walkmen are fantastic, but I do feel like The Rat is nearly singular in their early catalog in terms of energy and aggression of delivery, particularly of the vocals. For me, the two closest to it in terms of heavier, driving energy would be Heartbreaker and The Witch from their 2012 album. Many of their other tracks have a smoother and more throwback 60’s rock style and laconic vocal delivery, which is not a knock on them at all, as many of those other songs are equally fantastic in their own way and unique to sounds other bands of the time were putting out there. My other personal highlights from their first decade would be We’ve Been Had, Another One Goes By, Woe Is Me, Lisbon, Song For Leigh, and Heaven.

Great song by a great band, however, it's not representative of their overall sound as someone else mentioned. They usually sound a lot less frenetic than this. They're from an era where the music scene exploded with bands (that began in the late 90s) trying to sound like bands that came before. Some might view this as a bad thing...as derivative, but it was an amazing time to be alive and of age. I went to so so many shows. These bands helped to reinvigorate rock music which had grown stale with rap rock and nu-metal. For me, the indie rock scene is the only reason I'm even aware of the awesome bands they were inspired by. I wouldn't have heard of bands like Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, Television, Bauhaus, The Chameleons, The Sound, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gang of Four, Cocteau Twins, Pixies, etc. if not for bands like Interpol, The Strokes, The Walkmen, Liars, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I mean, I could really go on and on (if you couldn't already tell 😅). Yes, there are better bands, but that can be said for any band really and I still think their music stands on its own and up to the test of time.

A poor man's version of The Strokes. And the Strokes are a poor man's version of The White Stripes or Modest Mouse. Walkmen are enough to please a niche in an era but nowhere close to the level of timeless. So many sound a like bands in this dumbed down genre where anyone could be in a band. They aren't bad don't get me wrong, they just bring zero to the table. Queens of the Stone Age kills this, And if you need proof just listen to the strokes song "last night". It's dang near the same song. 3 chord banging with distortion to hide horrible singing voice
