Judith Marie was Maynard's Mom. she had a stroke and was confined to a nursing home for 10,000 days before she died. Jimmy and Judith could be considered companion's to Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days.

What I love about this album is Maynard coming to terms with the world around him, lyrically. In past albums it seemed to eat him up. Now he is examining why these things keep happening to mankind, and it shows in the improved depth of the writing.

this album contains some of my favourite lyrics in anything, ever. Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be the One Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending, To write it down for all the world to see. But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again ... Typical

also Judith Marie is Maynard's mother, who was quite religious, wings for Marie was kind of about how her devotion and faith should've been enough to get her into heaven while Maynard's fairly anti religious and couldn't understand her faith which a lot of the time says devotion isn't good enough. she was paralyzed when Maynard was a child for 27 years until her death. 27 years is approximately 10,000 days.

Got into Tool with this one. Probably my favorite album ever and listen to it weekly. Many will say it's not as climactic and their absolute best compared to Lateralus, but it sure hits just as hard. I agree with you on how songs on this album just build up so very well. It's just a great, great album. If Lateralus was on the embracing of our spiritual journey in life, this was about the battle of man and questioning spirituality and the pitfalls of man's battle with itself in life. You can hear how painful and emotional it had to be working on Wings Pt. 1 and 2 with the theme wrapped around his mom's life. She had a brain aneurysm when he was still a kid (where the 10,000 days comes from as from that moment until her death was near 10,000 days) and that impacted his life. Right in Two is my all time favorite song lol. It's honestly hard not to get a little choked up with on it if you've ever felt upset at the world and how screwed up shit can be in society. Been listening to it a lot lately just hoping we find our way out of the mess we're in. A song that really speaks of the battle of self and our ego as does a lot of the album. Definitely on point calling it a duality. Fighting over land, over sea, over blood, over air. It's so damn powerful. Very thankful for this album and Tool. Really cool to see you reviewing this gem!

@@mollyesanborn Welcome! Just getting better is right. In their music you still hear something new even after so many times of listening. I don't know where they're going after Fear Inoculum, but supposedly there could be more Tool in the future. Waiting on that and anticipating what the Deftones venture off into next. I know you have liked Korn so Adema might interest you with Jonathan's half brother Marky who sang for them. Lots of good 90s and 00s bands within that sphere of nu metal, prog rock, and hard rock. Saw Gojira with Slipknot. They are pretty epic too. So far you've posted a lot of good reviews for some solid bands. Definitely a lot more to get into and endless content to review which is cool!

there is a band called “Death” which is considered the first Death Metal band. The first few albums are very raw, then the latter half of albums are progressive and more melodic. The vocalist/guitarist/main songwriter is considered The Godfather of Death Metal. He passed away to cancer in 2001 at 34 years old. It would be interesting seeing you react to their discography and seeing their progression. For example: The first album has a song about zombies, and the last few albums have songs about the human mind and just overall very deep psychological stuff. Cheers!!

Try not to think of the albums as individual songs , more like each song is a movement in a symphony. Each album is one long symphony. Most songs utilize the D minor Pentatonic scale, guitars tuned to "Dropped D" in two cases they tune down to B (B,E,A,D,G,B, Parabol, Parabola and Prison Sex)

It feels weird because I don’t know why but on normal birthdays it’s all fun and all, but for some reason when I reached my 10,000th day of existence it felt like more of a big deal, because that’s pretty much the biggest landmark you can reach in terms of age you know once you cross that threshold there’s no 100,000 there’s no 1 million there’s just 10,000. obviously it doubles and triples but other than that that number for some reason means more to me. but anyway I had calculated that number from the day that I was born and already having been a tool fan decided to order the CD on eBay around that same time and started listening to it on repeat, it’s kind of a quirky little thing but I get something out of it and the CD is pretty awesome

I love the confused state of duality on this album. Its the point in a persons journey, after the despair of undertow, the search in Aenima, and finding of Lateralus, where those practices of self discovery are questioned. When we lose people in our lives, see the world continue to point the finger and fight each other, and still find ourselves in states of psychosis, that we find out that the game of life does not end upon reaching a state of clarity.

I agree with your assessment of "The Pot" If I had to hold the band to the fire, I would guess they would admit the bones of that song were written well before this album, but that they meshed it's core components into the feel of this album at it's later parts.

I've been a huge Tool fan for years now. I remember this album coming out when I was in high school and I listened to it on repeat for months. Years later and looking back I think there is an argument to be made that this album isn't by "Tool" but actually an by "Tool feat. Maynard from Puscifer". At times I can hear him singing and I can feel the same energy as what I get from Puscifer 's first album, which was released in 2008. It's as if, at times on the album, the version of Maynard who fronts Puscifer bleeds through. Would be very interested to hear you review Puscifer's debut album, V is for Vagina, to see if you also hear what I'm referring to. During your review here, you mention his singing is a bit different at times and I think he leans further into this style of singing when he moves on to Puscifer.

The end of the track doctor asks "tell me everything..." and that leads into the patient trying to respond with the account of what happened while still tripping pretty hard. But gets more coherent toward the end as it wears off. If he hadn't forgotten his pen, we as humans could have gotten some universal translation system like the rosetta stone was for languages, but one that decodes the universe itself and what it's trying to tell us (or warn us, maybe).

You might dig A Perfect Circle which has Maynard on vocals but with a more mainstream / traditional (sometimes lol) rock feel.

I thought about you when I filmed this! Our conversation made me really want to hear A Perfect Circle, I'll try and get to 10,000 Days soon and then move on to Mer de Noms from there. I'm SO pumped to hear their music!

@@mollyesanborn I think you’re really going to enjoy Tool’s latest album. I also think A Perfect Circle’s Mer de Noms is going to be right up your alley too. NIN’s Danny Lohner plays bass on the album. I just saw him and A Perfect Circle’s lead guitarist/founder Billy Howerdel perform live(2 videos on my channel). BTW, some great Metal Shows coming up: ERRA/InventAnimate…The Devil Wears Prada/Stray From The Path…Miss May I/LANDMVRKS. Gonna be an awesome summer!

I know, I'm bummed I missed out on the Billy Howerdel performance, I'll have to check out your videos of it. And yeah, looks like a great lineup for upcoming shows! ERRA is one I'm definitely gonna have to go see.

probably my favorite Tool album, such a masterpiece. Wings for Marie is dedicated to my mother, that build up in Rosetta Stoned is the greatest in music history, Right in Two, pffft, this whole album is insane. Deserves many repeated listens to fully appreciate...well like most good albums.

Just found your channel, and seeing the bands you react to, you must check out Failure. FAILURE's "Fantastic Planet" is a Must! You've done Hum(a band of peers of Failure), you've done Deftness(a band that's influenced by Failure), and Tool(a band of peers, and having toured with Failure). Failure is a Must, also, check out their album, "The Heart is a Monster", and their last two albums(since reforming), "In the Future Your Body Will Be The Furthest Thing From Your Body", and even their newest album, "Wild Type Droid". Failure is just a fantastic band, you will be happy you've listened.

Yep, I can say this is very true. I've been re-listening to 10,000 Days since filming my reaction and it's gotten even better. Lyrically too I'm picking up on more, and its emotional aspect becomes a lot more clear.

@@mollyesanborn yeah, you caught the emotional journey of 10,000 Days/Wings before hearing the lyrics and knowing the backstory. Def comes through musically and anguish of the vocal delivery relistening. I find Rosetta Stoned nearly as sad. THAT one, is a lot to unpack! 😁

Hi Molly! Another great reaction to a great album. Have you looked into Maynard's other band, A Perfect Circle? He has a song called Judith about his invalid mother whose unwavering faith persisted through her illness.. Wings for Marie is about her as well.

Like so many albums do, this one again brings back memories. I was in my first apartment, yadda yadda and so on, dating someone cool, who turned out not so cool by the end, but anyway, the album. So Tool has this way of doing this thing where they're not just simply playing notes; they're painting a picture with their music. They're taking you somewhere. They're channeling this sort of energy. To me, that's what makes them so special. Even despite how silly "Rosetta" might be, later on in the track there's still this fucking AWESOME tribal drum breakdown and it puts you in this certain place in your mind. I say this as someone who can attest to this as sober. Pun intended.

My recommendations to listen to next: Godflesh - Streetcleaner. Ministry - Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, Psalm 69. Bloodhound Gang - One Fierce Beer Coaster, Hooray For Boobies too. Fear Factory - Demanufacture. White Zombie - Astro-Creep 2000. Mushroomhead - XX, XIII. Aaand, maybe some The Berzerker's albums like self-titled album and Dissimulate, that's really heavy stuff.

Such an amazing album. This album came out about a year after my mom passed away (fighting cancer for a decade), so 10,000 Days/Wings2 hits particularly strong for me. Side note 1: I wish you could experience the packaging of the CD's. Lateralus & 10,000 Days both have very cool packaging with tong of art. Side note 2: I'm curious about your 'filing system' for your movies on your shelf. Are they in any particular order, or just thrown up there? I've been trying to figure it out for a long time now. I'm an alphabetical-sort kind of person. Anyway, great reaction! 👍
