I always took “U” to be Kendrick talking to himself. The poem leading into the song states “found myself screaming in a hotel room”, and you hear the house keeping knocking on the door before the second verse. It’s Kendrick voicing the internal self loathing he struggles with, his survivor’s guilt, how he misuses his influence like in “These Walls”.

This is the definition of a classic, timeless masterpiece. Im so confused how DAMN. won a Pulitzer. It was definitely an "oh sh!+ we f#¢%ed up" award, but I don't really blame the Pulitzer people, unlike the Grammy's, because it's the first "popular music" to ever win the award, and they don't even give it out that much for jazz. It's mostly an award for classical composers.
@angelniquewashington272113 күн бұрын
I like this album better, but Damn can literally be played in reverse. It's VERY impressive! I didn't get it until I saw a breakdown of Damn and how layered and intricate it actually is. There's a level of straight genius connected to Damn that we just don't see without a deep dive.

and as a bassist the bass lines on this album are disgusting. thundercat is the spine of this album instrumentally, he was really in his element during this era of music. you should check out Drunk by thundercat too, it's got a similar instrumental feel. This is gonna be slightly off topic but, based on this reaction, I think you'll hear and appreciate what I'm hearing in _Luther_ from his new album. Luther has my whole heart. To me, it sounds less like a straightforward love song and more like a song about his love of hip hop and the beauty and potential he sees in black people, black music, and black culture... which he so badly wants to protect from the forces that seek to colonize it. Nobody else seems to hear Luther that way but it jumps _all_ the way out to me. And I think most, if not all, of his love songs are about hip hop, along with most of his verses that appear to be directed toward a girl (regardless of what kind of song it is.) 🎶Take your enemies in front of god, introduce `em to that light, hit 'em strictly with that fye... This a vibe, do your dance, let em watch... In this world, concrete flowers grow... I wouldn't give these nobodies no sympathy... If this world was mine. Even when they're listing things like "'rari, crown, wrist, froze," these are common fixtures in rap music and hip hop culture. One of the slickest lines "...drip, pound on the way home," sounds sexual but to me it seems like swag (drip) and speakers (pound), as in listening to good, black music in the car. That song literally makes me tear up. It's very endearing to me, his earnest wish for people in places like Compton to see themselves the way he does. 🎶 Better days coming for sure... I'll take away the pain, I'll give you everything... I just wanna see you win. 🤎
@galeonsworldАй бұрын
Well first , it’s so crazy because I just dropped my gnx reaction and Luther is my favorite song. @@kristinalfc5846 The lyrics are pretty straightforward. He criticizes Kendrick’s lack of output, the perceived decline in his music in the wake of Mr Morale, Kendrick’s tendency to thrive on creating controversy, hints that his artistic persona might not be who he really is, and reminds people which audience you need to please to win things like Grammy awards.
