This is my favorite album for many reasons, and I'm glad you're referring to it as their debut album. Slipknots history is... insanely interesting, and this LP shows it very well, I love it. Doing deep dives into their music and performances before the Roadrunner signing is very intriguing and recommend it to anyone. This Pre-99 era is by far the most interesting, tribal, and experimental. This album shows great bass, pretty cool songwriting, beautiful percussion and is insanely versatile, a song like Do Nothing/Bitchslap being on an album with a song like Tattered & Torn is the best! Also: you are correct, there are many vocalists on this record: Anders did lead vocals, with Shawn, Paul and Josh doing backup vocals. Josh did most of the higher pitched, funky vocals (DN/Bitchslap). Love the review as always! Glad you enjoyed this great debut record

this era was known for 2 lineups. The first one was the one that actually wrote the songs for the album in the studio. Anders, Donnie, Josh, Paul, Joey, and Clown did all the recording on the MFKR. All the samples were actually added by Anders. The next lineup was mostly known for the live work. Anders, Mick, Josh, Paul, Joey, Craig, and Clown. Anders and Clown both did all the backing and extra percussion. Craig didn't add any samples or key work for the MFKR album in the studio. But Craig did do samples and keys on live sets.

Writing this before the review, I love this album, the ambient it creates and just how you are able to hear some demos that would later become standout tracks on their self titled and Iowa. Anders Colsefni was Anders artist name, I believe he was also known as Anders Rouw. His vocals truely made slipknot more of a death metal(?) band kind of? It's definately more of a classical metal growl and scream. Funfact, most tracks on this album, if not all are based on the card game magic the gathering (if I'm not mistaken) also Slipknot (the track) would later become (sic), gently is kind of even better than the version on Iowa imo. I love the funk elements early slipknot had in Do nothing and only one (the crowz version especially). it just shows their roots in mr. bungle and how they were massive fans of the first Mr. bungle album. (I love the part at 6:40) There was also a track called "part of me" that was supposed to be on this album but didnt fit in or smth. It also is really funky. also another track they made for the album was fur, which both of these tracks were leaked a few years ago, and fur is just such a fun heavy track with them repeating "fur covered in blood" over and over again. Craig was indeed featured on this album afaik, he's just less noticable here, but the weird sound in only one and the end of tattered and torn are definately him. He's just named as 133 MHZ on the album. Confessions is my favourite track from the album and I'm honestly sad that it was never reused on one of their later albums, cause it truely has an amazing bassline and nice lyrics. some feel was also released on a 3 track demo back then afaik. The second vocals are probably done by Josh Brainard. Josh also did the backing vocals in the wait and bleed demo. Killers are quiet would later turn into Iowa of course, and I kind of like the lyrics of it, but the iowa version is just superior I think. The weird whooshing noise is a bottle theyd roll across a table btw. Anders talked about it on one of his videos on his youtube channel. Also Patrick Neuwirth who left the band during that time too, was there to record some saw sounds, where I think they sawed some metal and recorded the sounds to use for the intro. Dogfish Rising is a joke track btw and features the members on instruments they wouldnt play. Joey plays the guitar, Shawn did the drums, Brainard (the guitarist whos also seen on the self titled cover btw) played the bass, wheras some staff of SR records would do the weird vocals. Overall I absolutely love this album, it is really playful and just has that creative feel to it. It's definately different to what ever slipknot would do later, and it definately would be Corey Taylor who would make the band much faster, change the lyrics to some songs and just rap some parts alot faster than Anders would. It's really interesting to look into the crowz era (which is generally the silver and golden disc they recorded back then, which also leaked a few years back. golden disc was afaik Corey performing with them and they added live audio to see how it would sound like. Also the silver disc was Anders and Corey recording demo tracks for their new album). Also, the first concert Slipknot did with Corey Taylor was uploaded by mfkr.com but got taken down for some reason by slipknots label, which is quite a shame, but I believe there are plenty of reuploads. the album itself was only pressed in a limited quantity of 1000 copies and is therefore highly valuable starting from 300/500€ for a genuine copy, since there are also alot of fakes floating around.

Yes. Listen to the two of them, you'll notice the instrumentation is very much the same.

If you're looking for more bands to get into, I'd suggest: -Mastodon -Soulfly -Fear Factory -Strapping Young Lad -White Zombie/Rob Zombie -Biohazard -Failure -Fantomas -The Locust -Melt Banana Some may be on your list, but you're getting a good variety of alternative, heavy, grind/noise all with cool proggy elements, or with Soulfly, world music elements
@Skygreen892 жыл бұрын
Also, you should try out Norma Jean. I find their first album particularly to be pretty cool. Dillinger is like a young professional with a PhD, while Norma Jean is the raw college dropout working at a gas station lol. Both bring the energy in unique ways

I mean if your listening too this era of slipknot you now need to check out their other unofficial(?) demo Crowz. Anders comes back for a few more tracks but theres more early versions of slipknot songs with Corey which are very interesting to hear.
@thefilthduke2 жыл бұрын
Gold Disk was their planned 2nd (kinda 3rd) album, and it might've been called Crowz, Corey said in an interview many years back that it was a name they used to refer to it back then. He recorded his version on the weekend he joined. This was July of 1997, however his recording isn't fully leaked. Anders' rough version is leaked though.

@mollyesanborn2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there was definitely a much smaller team working on Mate Feed Kill Repeat. And I wasn't aware that Craig helped with this album, I was thinking he joined the band after they released it. Perhaps I am mistaken though.

im not entirely sure, but i think Corey actually sang some parts on killers are quiet. Corey was already appearing on stage before they became famous and made life performances of MFKR, i think he was already a second choice as kind of a Co-singer or something, BUT not 100% sure.

So the song called SlipKnoT turned into (sic) on the selftitled, Gently is on IOWA, Only one and Tattered and torn are here too, and Killers are quiet turns into the IOWA song in the end of IOWA. Overall an awesome effort. So much of Paul, it always brings me happiness to hear him on this album.

This album is certainly something... Their sound before was odd to say the least lol. Anders is not a bad vocalist by any means, but them getting Corey in the band was the best thing they ever did. Anders was pretty much just a death metal vocalist.
@cooperhurst26393 ай бұрын
What’s interesting about Dogfish Rising is the band basically just got drunk, all swapped instruments, an then just started making shit up. I think Joey played guitar for this song, the guitarist at the time Josh Brainard, played bass, Clown (the percussionist) played drums, and the vocals were done by Paul Gray, Clown, and their producer, Sean

Yeah they pretty much sold out on day one. They got rid of Anders because his vocals were said to be too harsh for mainstream success. So they got pretty boy Corey in so they could get on radio. LOL!
