The production you're noticing is quintessential early-mid 80's thrash metal. Any Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax (etc) album from the same time frame will sound very similar. Careful... if you listen too much, you'll start growing denim.

Lots of echo and reverb. It was the sound at the time. I think the biggest noticeable shift was Metallica's And Justice For All. It lost all the big open effects and went for a tight close sound. I remember reading a review at the time where the reviewer said "it sounds like it was recorded in a matchbox"

@@gavinyoung7085 Absolutely. You know, Metallica is more experimental than I thought. 🤔 They also had St. Anger later on, and people said that one sounded like it was recorded in a public toilet.

The really crazy part about this album is it's the only Slayer album without double bass drums. You don't really notice because Dave Lombardo is going ape 💩the entire time. Also this is the album they played songs from the least as the years went on, but when they did people went completely insane. All the times I saw Slayer I only ever heard one song performed from this album just one time: Black Magic. It was awesome.

I'm never gong to hear that solo without thinking about sounding like "Scottish Highland" music again, lol. The clanging sound observation, like a sword hit something, in Die by the Sword is great too. Black Magic and Die by the Sword were mainstays of their live set for their whole career. Never saw them without them playing those. There is a real raw quality to this record, not so polished as later stuff, but the hints are there for what they would become. Like other commenters have said, that is a byproduct of the low budget and the fact the Thrash genre was all new to everyone and was still finding it's feet, defining itself. Great reaction and I love that you are loving Slayer so much. They always brought the energy you talk about to their live sets and they were tight as you could ask for. Listen to their live record, Decade of Aggression, after you get South of Heaven under your belt and you'll see. One of the best live records ever.
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn 5 ай бұрын
Haha, glad you found that comment funny! There is definitely a dash of some Scottish Highland-esque sounds on this album, I absolutely love it. @@mollyesanborn I think there is a video of the full Decade of Aggression recording to. They filmed it. But, yeah, Slayer shows were always insane. Crazy mosh pits and stagediving at clubs that allowed it. More than one venue had property damage after the show. The Trocadero in Philadelphia for sure, they had to close and ended up just renovating. This one time, this guy I didn't know was standing next to me headbanging into my shoulder, totally smashing his face into. I was just like, "Carry on Brother."

This album was recorded for $3000. It was 1983 and this kind of music barely existed. Nobody really knew how to record music like this yet so a lot of bands resorted to cranking up the reverb, resulting in the "echo-ey" sound you described. The songs are also structured more similarly to traditional heavy metal, which makes sense considering thrash was still in Its embryonic stage. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on South of Heaven and their more "modern" sound.

This is gonna sound weird, but I find this album so endearing & kinda cute, because they clearly want to go in the same direction as the later stuff but there’s still a lot of classic sounding Judas Priest-Style metal like the solos having actual notes than squealing away, Tom Araya’s high falsetto screams & the production is real cavernous & raw. Funny production note: the drums weren’t recorded with the kit on a carpet so Dave Lombardo asked a roadie at the time, Gene Hoglan (later of Death, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory etc) to hold his kit down as he played lol
@mollyesanborn

One of my fave Slayer albums. I first heard this just when I was getting into metal around 1988-ish. Kerry King (guitar) I think wrote most of the songs and was influenced by NWOBM bands like Iron Maiden and you can definitely hear that influence. Jeff Hanneman (guitar, RIP) had a more punk influence and didn't start contributing songwriting until the later albums,.I'm not so keen on Hell Awaits other than the title track, but it all came together perfectly with Reign in Blood. You should definitely do South of Heaven (the best IMHO) and Seasons in the Abyss. For me that was peak Slayer (with the original lineup). They got lost for a while with the rise of grunge in the 90s and replaced the original drummer (Dave Lombardo) and a lot of the subsequent albums became quite monotonous. They perked up a bit with World Painted Blood which was also the return of Dave...coincidence?.

Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are the 2 guitar players for Slayer. Kerry King also had a short run with Dave Mustaine's band, Megadeth. He played 5 shows with an early form of Dave's band in 84'. Which reminds me, Molly, you have not reacted to Megadeth's debut album yet... nudge, nudge....

Except for Tom Araya (vocals/ bass)... the other 3 members of Slayer - Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman (guitars) and Dave Lombardo (drums) were still teenagers when they raised enough money to record the debut Slayer album 'Show no mercy' in 1983 for Metal Blade Records. Slayer were very impressed after seeing Metallica play the L.A. clubs in 1982 and their debut album "Kill 'em all" in '83 was sonically what they wanted to emulate... You can hear the influence of Judas Priest ... Venom ... in 'Show no mercy'... (Slayer used to cover Venom's "Witching hour" in concerts) ... Metallica moved to San Francisco in 1983 but Slayer remained in L.A. where the glam metal scene was prevalent... They wanted to emulate what Venom did onstage and wore black makeup (similar to Alice Cooper) w/ stage props and leather outfits w/ metal spikes... They were photographed w/ that image for 'Show no mercy'. In 1984, Slayer played San Francisco for the first time where thrash metal bands were dominating the scene... They met the band Exodus and were amazed that they had fans who loved their music there... The members of Exodus saw them live and advised them that the makeup was not necessary going into Slayer's next gig in the area. Slayer played their next show without makeup and stayed that way for the rest of their career. In 1984, Slayer played to a room of fans at a radio station in NYC and it was recorded for a live EP 'Live undead' that year... You can hear the live versions of 'Black magic'... 'The Antichrist' ... 'Die by the sword'... etc. on that record.

If this album had been released 5 month earlier, Slayer would have been the 'Godfathers of Thrash'. How would that have changed things, I wonder.

@@mollyesanborn damned ADHD and multiple comments... Ugh... It's my personal favorite from them. It always has been, and it always will be. In fact, GHUA was my first Slayer album, in general, and still, to me, the absolute best one, front to back, though it's a bit rough here and there, but I feel that way about all of their work.

The thing I love about this album is the variety. I feel like Slayer became too repetitive after, like same formula all the time (which I still enjoy) but I always love diversity in a band, it makes it more fun to listen to.
