Always delivering with the great content Molly! Cowboys from Hell reminds me of Facelift from AiC cause you can hear the 80s gloss slowly evaporate and be replaced by the 90s grit, and as a bonus it makes it the most fun (imo) Phil’s voice never sounds like this again & stays in the lower register bluesy singing & growls/shouts. On this album it’s like if Halford sang for Metallica, especially on songs like Heresy. Everyone will be bringing this up, but the live performance of Domination from Moscow 91 is one of the defining moments of Pantera ever recorded.
@mollyesanborn8 ай бұрын
That's a great description of how this album rides the line between the 80's vs 90's style of metal. It blends the two sounds incredibly well! And I'll definitely have to give that live performance of Domination a watch, thanks for letting me know.

Pantera has a "big 4" of albums within their discography. You definitely started with the two that are considered their most iconic and best by most people, but their 7th and 8th albums "Far Beyond Driven" and "Great Southern Trendkill" are considered the other 2 great albums in their discography if you want to continue further with them. They get much darker and heavier but less thrashy. The wide consensus is that anything pre-"Cowboys From Hell" is not worth listening to as much because it's basically not even the same band, being much closer to hair metal and traditional heavy metal if you can believe it. Pantera is definitely one of those bands with a very interesting history and trajectory.

The shrill high notes and super deep divebombs are a combination of a Digitech Whammy set to a 2 octave sweep and his guitar having a Floyd Rose floating tremolo, aka whammy bar. The nut locks down so you can work the tremolo and keep the strings in tune. The double low dive became known as the DimeBomb.

I can't think of any bad songs on here really. One thing I really like is sometimes there is this "flow-state" in the guitar parts, especially in "The Sleep" where it's just grooving to the point it's almost chill despite being heavy. Obviously, you're not gonna get any chill on "Far Beyond Driven" - that's probably the most Hostile (pun intended) I've heard this band. Molly- any plans to maybe check out TesseracT or Periphery? The call and response / gang vocals/ chants are really from the hardcore (hardcore punk) influence, that you also find in metalcore, beatdown hardcore, Deathcore that came after CFH. When this album hit, people lost their minds. Even though they had 4 albums before this, they were released independently. You had to be local to the scene to know who they were. Thanks for the info, yeah I was confused when Wikipedia lists it as their fifth but everyone was saying it's their first in the comments. That makes sense now. I'd love to check out their earlier albums in my own time and hear what they sounded like as a glam rock band.

btw cowboys fro mhell is their first studio album and vulgar display is their 2nd. in order they go: CFH, Vulgar display, far beyond driven, trendkill, Reinventing the steel. just thought you should know in case you get confused Fun fact: before phil (their vocals) joined pantera and pantera became pantera, they were actually a glam metal band which is why on some tracks like shattered and heresy there are some really high voice vocals and high pitch guitars and they dont really feel like pantera songs, not a lot of sludgey heavy riffs and growls Also Dominations breakdown is the best in metal history and dime was the best guitarist you cant argue with that

Thanks for the explanation, that makes a lot more sense now. I'll definitely continue with Far Beyond Driven, Trendkill, and Reinventing The Steel here on the channel. And I will not argue with you on those last two points, Domination is an absolutely killer song and Dimebag Darrell sure knew his way around a guitar. Such a talented musician.

Another great album by Pantera.

Such a good album. Really its the only one where Phil demonstrates his amazing singing ability, before he moved on to low screams and stuff. I like his later singing/screaming too, but this album is just really unique in that regard :)

This is Pantera's first album. Vulgar Display is their 2nd.

Incorrect. This was made in 1990. They had several others in the 80's before this one. I suggest you go do some research. Then delete your comment.

I know they released four albums leading up to Cowboys From Hell, but they had a different vocalist and a very different style as well (glam/power metal). Maybe I'll check their early stuff out at some point too, would make for a fun listen!

I knew about the glam era that people made fun of...I didn't realize it was under the name Pantera.
@voidwraithprime85218 ай бұрын
@@mollyesanborn That's basically why I felt the need to draw a distinct line at Cowboys from Hell being Pantera's first album. I'm obviously wrong on a technical level, but, take it from a guy who grew up in the 80s listening to hair metal and sang in a cover band during the 90s/2000s, no one knew who Pantera was until Cowboys from Hell. My guitarist was their biggest fan, and he never brought "Power Metal" over to jam out to. "I Am the Night" wasn't being blasted through our system after practice. I imagine most people's first experience with the band was the MTV video for "This Love" from Vulgar Display of Power. From that point on, the band itself did not seem to be promoting anything before CFH. So, yeah...I'm very wrong on a technical level, but 100% right in every way that actually matters.

that 'Rhythmic Pattern' Pantera uses is called 'Power Groove'. 😎

I started listening to Pantera with Vulgar Display of Power as well, however, I did it back in the early 90’s. Found Cowboys From Hell after. Next should be Far Beyond Driven. Great Southern Trendkill is fire too. I wouldn’t explore any further back than CFH. It gets ugly 😂 We’re talking spandex and glam. Love me some Pantera, but their really early stuff wasn’t for me. RIP Vinny and Dimebag

i saw you doing system of a down whole discography reaction so what do you think about doing daron malakian and scars on broadway reaction? they have only 2 albums and i believe that on the first one you can hear soad drummer (ofc daron on the guitar and vocals), some songs really sound very mezmerize/hypnotize era and are pretty much underrated in soad fanbase

Fun thing that is this album isn't debut album - it's FIFTH album. First 3 of them was in glam metal (like as Mötley Crüe) and 4th was thrash metal. :)

be interesting to see and hear what you think about Pantera's 1st couple albums when they were GLAM, before becoming 1 ( if not) the BEST Groove metal bands. without em, no Machinehead ( they have a couple tracks with a Pantera vibe)

I'll have to give their earlier albums a listen too!

Cowboys from Hell is a fascinating album, this is almost perfect in my opinion. Have you checked out Lamb of God or Machine Head? These bands are also pretty solid. If you want to introduce yourself with Groove Metal, then listen to LoG's As the Palaces Burn

Nope I've never heard anything from Lamb Of God or Machine Head! I've got both on my list though, I'd love to hear some of their stuff.

This particular album is its own sound i feel like, with phils vocals, grove and the general direction they we’re headed as a band. Later albums are heavier and vocally more brutal than this one thats for sure. Check out far beyond driven next its next in line after vulgar
@mollyesanborn8 ай бұрын
Yeah this record has a sort of fun grooviness to it paired with the heaviness, such a great combo of styles. I'll definitely check out their later stuff too.
