watching this podcast has made me feel so seen. us people with adhd have dreams and goals but we just have an illness that makes it so much harder and it feels like no one understands. its so much more serious than people make it out to be.

This podcast is the reason I went to my psychiatrist at 20 years old and asked to be evaluated for ADHD. I thought there was something inherently wrong with me, I hated myself for not being able to get up, and then I heard you describe me better than I ever could while describing yourself. Sure enough, I have RAGING ADHD and I'm now on a stimulant. Still working on dosages, but without listening to your episode about ADHD, I would have kept continuing to chalk it up to my depression and anxiety and wondering why nothing was helping. I understand myself now and am able to give myself grace because I know I'm not lazy or incapable - my brain just works differently, and I don't think I can ever describe how this saved me.

Ur so real for this whole entire podcast. Telling us what’s happening with medicine, dating, etc in real time and being so vulnerable. You don’t have to take medication every day, see if there’s times when you genuinely need to rest and not adhd rest where you feel bad about it. But like take something during the week and then take the weekend off and spa or have fun!!! Xo!

Diagnosed at 21 here!! My first day of adhd meds I got out of bed, made a full breakky and cleaned my house😭 I’m telling you my life has been saved because of my meds. I was also so anti meds, I even put off taking them for 6 months when I had them from fear. I was at my lowest when I took them and BAM. It’s been 2 years on them only gone up 10mg in it, and grades improved, mood improved, energy up, quality of life improved. I actually feel like I can be functional. I will say you will see side effects after a few days-week as your body stabilizes on them. I still get days where I can’t get out of bed from adhd paralysis. As well as not everyday is going to be a good day on them. Some mornings I feel like my adhd is worse despite still taking my meds. It of course is not a save all. But if you start implementing healthy habits alongside them, you will notice your symptoms of adhd will be a little more manageable!! Also tip, try to eat food along side taking them, even forcing yourself to have an egg, or whatever, after 45 minutes of taking mine and I haven’t ate I get nausea/puke and foods becomes disgusting 😭) also not a scientist or doc) but protein mornings (helps brain process your release of meds better), also avoid Vitamin C within an hour-2 hours of taking stimulant meds. It for some reason affects the strength of your meds being released!! ❤️❤️

I’m 20 years old and started medication 12 months ago- my life has changed so significantly. The first 3-4 months was a lot of changing medications and doses, but I literally could not believe how simple certain things like putting clothes away or phone calls became. There were days in the beginning I felt so wired and over energised but it does wear off! My hottest tips: (for anyone) - EAT BREAKFAST !! You will thank yourself by around 4pm - try to get up and moving before it kicks in, or identify what it is you need to do for the day, because you might get LOCKED IN to something SO RANDOM. Sometimes it’s helpful like cleaning something you’ve been putting off for ages but other times it’s like, you’ll be doing your nails for over an hour or something lol. - be weary around caffeine.. I consume it now and feel okay but there have been times I’ve felt cracked - avoid taking medication the day after drinking: maybe it’s my own experience or I was drinking too much but the first few months I had would get heart palpitations or just feel so fkin weird - DRINK WATER omg - apparently (and I still don’t know if this is a myth or what lol) but vitamin C specifically oranges or orange juice lessens the effects? - CAREFUL YOU DONT ACCIDENTALLY DOUBLE DOSE. Holy fuck I did this one time because I FORGOT I had taken my medication- ended up in a medical tent thinking I would die - practice affirmations in telling yourself that heart palpitations or a racing heart do not indicate certain death. Obviously if it’s every day that’s another story but there likely will be moments of panic, these moments are manageable so long as you’re equipped with deep breaths and a belief that you will be okay. - you’re not reeeallly meant to drink on the medication, but if you do, BE SO CAREFUL AND SLOW WITH IT. The effects of the alcohol will take TWICE AS LONG to kick in as they would without the meds. You will not feel it coming, keep drinking to get silly, and then BANG you’re plastered. This kicked me in the fucking arse in the first 3-4 months. So happy for you Mads! It’s a journey but god it is so worth it for so many people. ☺️☺️xx

So happy for you Madeline! As someone who tried MANY adhd meds before finally finding the right combo, I would say it’s pretty normal to feel a bit wired (and to have other side effects) before your body adjusts! Give it at least a month and the wired feeling should go! They may have also started you on too high of a dose (some of us actually need children’s doses). Anyway good luck, sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right one but it’s life changing!!

i have a suggestion that seriously helps me. making lists of things that you can do the night before you take your meds and putting a little circle or box next to each so you can check them off. gives you set goals to focus on and you can add more as you go if you think of any and have the time for more! because i totally get getting lost in something that doesn't really need to be done and then the day is over with no real progress in productivity. you got this girl.

Yeah medication is touted as self care now which is insane and needs to be questioned. I was the same, gut instinct to stay away from medication, I succumbed to SSRIs and hated how they just made me apathetic, numb, dissociated. It's just like being zombie-mode! And they often exacerbate the symptoms they're meant to alleviate. A lot of our psychological issues and 'disorders' are symptoms of something deeper. It's not always helpful. It might help us be more efficient cogs in the machine of productivity tho

ADHD itself can cause medication aversion not only because it makes you forget to take your meds, but also because someone with ADHD that is hyperfocusing on something is strictly better at it than anyone else other than someone with savant syndrome. People with ADHD are often perfectionists and hard on themselves because they constantly compare themselves to when they're hyperfocusing. They think their hyperfocused self is the "real them" and that if they could only get their act together they'd be that way all of the time. That's unrealistic and hyperfocusing comes with real negative consequences, but it can also make someone less likely to take their ADHD medication because they may hyperfocus less while medicated, or think "if the meds don't make me hyperfocus why bother with them?" The truth is that stimulant medications are the most effective treatment by such a large margin that they're even the first recommendation for healthcare providers now. The old advice of using medication for a last resort and trying everything else first caused decades of suffering. The problem is that ADHD is adaptive. Any non-physical intervention will simply be adapted to. Once your circumstances or treatments cease to be novel, your ADHD will get bored of them and they'll lose effectiveness. Stimulant medications work on an epigenetic level in the brain. So ADHD cannot adapt to it. PS: Lots of great data from this guy, and his lectures are on youtube: www.russellbarkley.org/factsheets.html

It's not that I don't want to get things done, I just can't. Or, on the otherhand, I can clean the whole house, make a home cooked meal, do the laundry, workout, was my hair and run all the errands I was supposed to run in 1 freaking day. And afterwards I'm completely exhausted and overstimulated.

the answer to ‘double dosing’ short acting medication: yes most people take another dose during the day but a slightly smaller one because adhd meds have a half life, for example, i could take 15mg in the morning and then 10mg in the afternoon. but also i would consult your psychiatrist before doing anything!! andddd talk to her about getting on a long acting version so you don’t have to double dose xx rn im having to take my long acting meds then also take short acting in the afternoon because it wears off pretty quick for me. but remember it’s all a process (i’ve been on a few different kinds of meds over the past few years) and how medications work can change over time too so work with your psychiatrist and find what works for you!!❤

I am on my adhd pills and yes they make me want to do all my tasks but it makes me read better, slow down and actually take everything in. With the dizziness, when I took a certain kind it would make me dizzy n sick n I actually would sleep😂 that was Concerta, I’m on Vyvanse now Also remember to take a day off a week or you’ll grow a tolerance to your medication and currently my blood pressure is getting high so make sure to check that too! Definitely try a longer release not a short release because I completely get the feelings, I’m a slow release it’s best for me
