Dad and I always picked corn when it was higher in moisture, that will avoid the shelling. Your comment about this is correct and stated just as I was typing. The old double chain elevators that were used to move cob corn into cribs, had slots that allow the shelled corn to escape, before it got into the crib and rot that area of the stored corn.

Those tanks you were talking about are also great for moving and housing small Hogs or any small animal. Cut a hole in the side big enough for your hogs size. And you can lock them in the tank by lifting the cage. Putting your animal in and dropping the cage down. Sometimes it take a couple of people to lift the cage w/o dropping it on your animal. Take the cap off for Ventilation as you see fit. Leave the tanks on the pallets and you have Palletized animal moving system. Best Wishes! M.H.

I remember my grandpa picking corn with a two row (I think) Oliver back in the early 70s. It mounted on and around the tractor if I remember correctly. He stored it in a long corn crib with an ally in the center where he always park the tractor with a feed wagon. I remember he ground ear corn for cattle feed. I think he added it to silage but can’t remember for sure. You are correct about the younger guys needed to keep this alive- unfortunately there are fewer and fewer guys wanting to work with old machines.

Once you get the bushings free, we always drizzled oil onto the elevator chains and bed once a day. ...speaking as a past user of two row pickers, the excitement wears off pretty quick, and it just starts to wear on you.
