Love what your doing. I wish my dad was alive to see your videos. This is the exact way we farmed when i was a kid and same equipment. Would love to do this in my retirement. I could easily buy all this equipment in decent shape with even some parts equipment. without costing a fortune, And do it all debt free. Great job!

In the 1960 s we ran 1 row new Idea picker on a 165 massey then in 1976 we got a 9600 ford brand new I was 9 and ran 2 row new Idea picker about 150 acres per year of corn put it all in a corn crib. alot of good hard work. We picked corn up to 1996 Then shovel the cobs all into a 355 hammer mill and fed it to pigs and cattle. Good old farming. I hear you.

I've been using John Deere 2-cylinder tractors and equipment my whole farming life, my farmer friends always tell me to up-grade to newer stuff, at least use equipment from the 60's. I just tell them it's paid for, and the livestock don't care how it gets from the seed bag into the field to their belly. Keep up the great way you farm, if you are happy and satisfied, they you farm don't let other opinions bother you.

At 5:21 By having the elevator over loaded as its shown here....your shelling more corn on the rolls. The corn can not get off the rolls quick enough ! This is where running your picker on 1000 rpms.....and engine half open plays a major part !!! With 250 bushel per acre corn......Im still moving at around 5 miles per hour. It works !

I ran one of those pickers on an oliver 88 when I was about 15. I ran the pto at the right speed, but ground speed too fast, the result was stalks getting wound up in the snapping rollers. So, in your case you have good ground speed. However, I haven't seen the cobs gather at the bottom of the first elevator before, but my guess is high yeild. People need to remember, when this equipment was built, you might have had 1 ear of corn per stalk ever 2 or so. Not 2 ears on every single one, and our gleaner model F built in the 70s show that.
@knappfarms
@knappfarms Жыл бұрын
This is a great comment you have good insight I never thought to mention how much higher the yields are today then they where in the 70s
@bairfamilyfarm1336
@bairfamilyfarm1336 Жыл бұрын
@@knappfarms We farm ground that doesn't get the specialized treatment that my co-workers give their ground. Just a blend my dad puts in during planting (potash and MAP maybe?), and manure we spread in the fall. So, yeilds are probably lower than they should be, but the hybrid has changed enough that yeilds are higher than they used to be. Last year we had a terrible yeild but it was still getting ahead of what the old gleaner's cylinder could take when using the 4-row head.

Ive used this picker for years !! Cheap running....spend 300 dollars on it ( a gear box repair ) in 25 years. Key !!!!! When this picker is left outside for just a few days a film of rust can build up on the snapper rolls in front of the picker. If you try to pick corn with even a tiny bit of dew on the stalks the leaves will instantly cling to the roll....and it will build up and break a roll ! This can happen as quick as moving it 15 feet. The rolls are hard to find and expensive ! Always allow the dew to come off first ! The sheller unit.... not the super sheller.. ( by myself ) I could pick two semi loads of corn a day...and have them loaded on the semi. With my 6600 John Deere combine....I cant do that ! The reason ??? Chasing wagons ! Have to take wagons out in various areas of the field .....then go get them again. No need for that with the two row ! Pick until the load is full....finished !

My only experience with corn is with combines that removes the corn from the cob. I do have experience with making cow feed. And the cob, the extra shucks, and few extra stalks do add the extra bit of filler and a small portion of protein to the feed. If I could find the property to put together a feed lot I would want my main ingredient to be hold eat corn. I am somewhat new to your channel but it is very nice to learn and see older equipment working. Hey, if it works, don't fix it. I enjoy watching.

I was just surprised that it was going through the picker at that speed. I had a 2rn that was 1000 rpm and it was goofy to run, it liked to plug up the throat but it's narrower then the wide row throat. I noticed that you don't have the beater bar behind the gathering chains that would help keep the throat cleaner, but it was an option. I think that corn is pretty clean for not having fan on it too. Keep up the good work 👍 If I had footage of me round baleing I'd get alot of the comments like you got, sometimes you just have to, get er done.

Those stalks piled up on the head is from really dry/ripe stalks. Nothing you can do if its January. Its your machines and your corn but if I were running it I would try a lower gear still. It may help with the stalks breaking off. I was always taught those stalks should pull straight down more or less. If they bend over toward the front its too fast. Also I raked alot of hay with a farmall A.

I noticed you don't have auto-steer on the 1486 or AutoTrac RowSense on the picker. Very nice video.

I believe I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been in a tractor with auto steer 😂

Like the thermal. It would be interesting to watch more to see what cows do in the dark and also what night predators might be around. Who knows? You might be able to solve the mystery of bloodless mutilated livestock.

We have taken care of a few coyotes with them but can’t put those videos on this channel KZbin doesn’t like it when I stray into the firearm world but once I get some more videos I might make a hunting channel I’ll announce it on the channel whenever I do

Pick your corn at around 23 % moisture....yah wont have the corn booging up in the elevator. I always start picking corn when its around 25 % . Almost no shelling on the rolls

You should pick pick ear corn with the 560 put it in first gear with the ta back you go to damn fast with that 1486. If you put the hoods back on the 1486 it will be more aerodynamic and you will get better fuel mileage.

The 1486 all had the 540/1000 but the 1586 only had the 1000 but people would take the ptos out of 706/806 or 1206 and put it in there 1586 so they could also have the 540 love the videos keep it up
