I first want to say I am so glade I found your Channel. I just can’t get enough of your past videos. Now about your bamboo rod. Most of the rods in that era were slower. My dads was also. Now let’s look at today. I make bamboo rods. I don’t like slow rods. Also I live in the mountain of Georgia,USA. Most of our streams are not river but streams. Most you can cast across. Most are very boulder riddled and very hard to walk in. And falling in is expected. So to fish these little streams I make a fast(as fast as bamboo can get) 6 foot 4wt. Rod to be used with double taper fly line. I can cast this 30-40 feet (9-12 meters). Bamboo is something you just fall in love with. My first rod was my dad’s 7foot 6 inch and had this old reel with a greased line on it. With a leader attached to it with an overhand knot. Just want to tell you my story and how bamboo can be so different. Thank you for the warmth you bring to your channel and the love you two have for fly fishing.

Over the years I have gone from Sage carbon rods to nowadays the modern Fiberglas blanks by well known Kabuto and Steffen Bros., but wanted to experience bamboo so I had a Garrison 204E 7 foot reproduction made for me. This is a joy to cast as long as the proper size and weighted reel is on it. The modern skeleton style lightweights although beautiful to look at will not balance my rod like a proper Hardy Perfect or older Uniqua reels. Great fun and a pleasure to cast when balanced.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳

Lovely video. I have a 1960's Hardy Phantom Palakona 9ft #6 3-piece cane rod I was gifted on the proviso I never sell it! It only comes out for special occasions, fishing a chalk stream etc. I think using a hand built rod, made by a real craftsmen is a privilege. It's somehow a more special experience compared to using a mass produced, production-line rod, no matter how good the rod is. You really have to 'use' a cane rod, it doesn't 'cast itself', which makes catching fish on one even more rewarding. I also think using a cane rod transports you back to more simple, slower times when the world wasn't in such a hurry! And that's certainly something I appreciate now and then!

Great video. During lockdown 1 & 2 I built 2 glass and two cane rods, perfect antidote to working from home and getting away from a laptop. It was my first time and patience and perseverance paid off, I couldn't be happier with the results. Most pleased with my cane 7'6" 4#, if I do say so myself a thing of beauty. Like IB I have a fast casting style and had to adjust but it didn't take long and it is a joy to cast. First trip out I had a handful of Yorkshire Dales trout and grayling to just under 1 3/4 lb and the sensation of playing a nice fish on cane is as they say, makes you feel more in touch with the fish. Keep them coming, maybe you could do a fish off new v old cane?

Just one more thing. In Thomas Edison’s winter home in Fort Myers Florida (where I practiced for 33 years.) On the wall there is a 10’ bamboo rod with the 150 lb tarpon he caught it on. I own 12 carbon fiber rods from 2 wt to 11wt. But to fish a Bamboo rod is just special.

Hi Andy and IB I really enjoyed seeing the cane fly rod getting a day out on the river and the history behind it. I have purchased a few cane rods over the last 2 or 3 years and not surprisingly each rod has its own feel, no one cane rod taper will cast and feel the same. In terms of the more vintage cane rods, it is my view that they are probably best enjoyed by using them for a little period in your day's fishing and alternating it with a carbon fly rod. Interestingly, I recently purchased your exact rod in mint condition and looking forward to trying it on the river. I am glad to say that I can shed some light on what the number 3 on both ferrules means. In order to know that the male and female ferrule are the correct pair (i.e. assembled out of the same culm of bamboo) they each have the same number engraved. I see that my Sharpes of Aberdeen, Scottie Featherweight model (8 foot 6 inches, 5 weight) has the same two numbers on both ferrules.

Beautiful casting shots in another beautiful place... thank you. Yes, split cane is very enjoyable - especially with the dries and wets on a smaller water like yours. And carbon may be the present and future, as you say, but there are other reasons for that other than fishing pleasure and efficiency with dries and small wets on beautiful smaller waters. Heavy? My carbon 9' 5 weight is at 3 oz actual - and my split cane Leonard 9' Catskill 4 weight is at 4.1 oz. actual. An ounce over a 9' lever is too heavy? As you said , the split cane tip casts itself once you slow down. Far fewer false casts necessary with good cane. But you are right, for various other reasons, carbon rods are the present and future... Reasons other than beauty and close work with long leaders and dry flies and small wets in a natural wonderlands like you two so actively enjoy. Again, thanks for the HD and the very lovely afternoon by your side...

Some of the older split cane rods were tip heavy and not so pleasant to cast and fish. Made in heavier line weights and in 3-piece configuration, the vintage bamboo rods are not, in my view, much fun. Split cane fly rods designed for stream trout, by comparison, are a delight for cast and fish. You can fish all day with a custom-made 4 weight bamboo fly rod in a 2/2 configuration in lengths from 7'0" to 8'0" and have a blast. Ron U.

I was waiting for someone to comment about how much fun a well-made bamboo fly rod can be to use. In fact, other than nymph fishing where a longer reach is needed, I prefer them for my trout fishing. I hollow-build my cane rods, which lightens the swing weight and makes them more responsive than solid built cane rods. In the 7 to 8 foot length, and built from a thoughtful taper in 3 to 5 weight class, a cane rod will knock your socks off. Joel

I fish bamboo and fiberglass a lot the past 20 years. In fact I plan trips with fishing a bamboo and glass rod in mind. Mostly small streams where I can fish with dry flies. Fishing with bamboo (I own both contemporary and older rods) and also with glass is you are more aware of the tool you're using. More aware of and appreciation of the hard work and craftsmanship that has gone into making such a rod, as opposed to mass manufactured carbon rods. My glass rods are all custom built rods too.

Learnt to flyfish years ago on my grandfathers greenheart rod. The key is to slow down your action and allow the rod to work the line and not the line to work the rod. Have acquired a vintage premium split cane recently which has a surprising fast action for cane. Use it occasionally for fun. Am fascinated by your rod hold with forefinger extended. This is the same as mine. I clearly find it superior than extended thumbhold for acuracy, particularly on control of the backcast-but have not come across any other angler in NZ who uses this.

Cane rods have the weight of the rod added to the line weight, so you have to slow your timing to wait for the rod to catch up. You should try a parabolic cane rod. They were made for long distances. Ive been making cane rods for 11 years now and yes they are slow but slow is good. Now, they can be made to be fast, Recently I;m making hollow cane rods which are amazing. If you can cast a fiber rod cane acts about the same, the cane is full flex much like a glass rod.

I'll be honest it was only when I looked at the slowmo footage of this rod that I realised it's actually pretty fast, far more than I thought!

I caught my first trout on my dads Bamboo rod 62 years ago in Pennsylvania where I grew up. When he passed, I found it amoung his things with the carbon rod I built for him. I completely rebuilt it and fished it in Colorado and caught trout once again. I also fish the carbon rod. I figure the Bamboo rod is around 80 years old.

great video guys.Love the cane.so much more relaxed and slow casting action but heavy as you say compared to carbon. You have to try a modern day glass fibre rod.Hope you havent been using the cane as a whip on Andy I.B !! lol.
