12:48 it’s not explained in the movie but one of the writers said that the backstory is that when Marty was 13 he snuck into Doc’s lab. Doc had a reputation for being a weird hermit. Upon seeing Doc’s inventions, Marty was genuinely impressed and Doc was happy that someone in town actually saw him as an inventor and not some crazy guy. Marty becomes his assistant. I don’t remember if they mention it in the movies at any point but Doc pays Marty for his services so it’s a part time job, proving that when Strickland calls him a slacker it’s because he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. Marty is 17 in this movie so he has been working for Doc for 4 years.

I like that Meg picked up on the finer elements of this movie--it is first-and-foremost a comedy, but it actually does do a lot of great stuff in the background--character work, explorations of kids and their parents and even a finer point about being careful about how you live your life, for your kids... or even enjoying what you have while you have it. Marty hated/was disappointed with his father at the beginning of the movie, but meeting him at his own age and seeing what his father was struggling with made Marty finally connect with/understand his father. And then Marty's desperate attempt to save his best friend's life with a warning--how many of us wish we had the exact same chance with someone we lost? Based on everything I've seen over the years, I'm pretty confident in saying that I believe BTTF is the most popular movie of all time--the only people who don't like BTTF, it seems, are people who haven't seen it yet. It's just a masterclass of filmmaking.

@@TerribleEnglish Actually, it is. It's categorized as a comedy officially and everyone involved were intending to make a comedy. Eric Stoltz was fired as Marty specifically for playing it too straight. The thing is that not all comedies have to be completely unserious or wacky/goofy. BTTF understands this and it walks a fine line, because everyone involved in the production were firing on all cylinders.
@TerribleEnglish9 ай бұрын
@@DocLathropBrown I don't agree that it's a comedy, or that it should be categorized that way. Everything that happened in the beginning of the movie actually happened. There is no "time-loop" where Doc never died. He dies in the mall parking lot, and then Marty goes back in time to change everything. Time travel has to "start" somewhere, and the very first time that time travel happened was in the Twin Pines mall parking lot.
@bdc11179 ай бұрын
Time travel has to start somewhere, but it still creates unresolvable paradoxes once it occurs, certainly if you're allowed to go back and then return. Marty's impact on the future of his family would have been much greater than the movie assumes, and the new future would have been less predictable overall (if nothing else because physical interactions in nature are to a large extent effectively random and unpredictable, gene mutations for example, so a replay of the same time period starting from the exact same place would never yield the same results twice even without Marty's interference). Why would Marty's 2.0 parents not remember their encounter with him in 1955? Why would they be in the same house even? He and Doc should not have been able to assume that, once having altered future events, he could still expect Doc to be in the same parking lot at the same time by fast-forwarding there. If you can change the future by traveling to the past, then you can't also return to the original future, before time travel happened, and have it all be as though the time travel didn't happen yet, give or take a few details -- that's more like an ability to hop between parallel universes, for which you need more than a flux capacitor my friend.

This is when we mention this is just a comedy for fun, not a "what would time travel actually do to alter reality" type story.

It was more a commentary on how western media presents “terrorists” to western audiences. More often than not, we get the image of irrational and almost cartoonishly violent men (almost always Arab) trying to completely unravel “freedom” or “the American way.” Whatever the creators want the audience to believe. We weren’t saying the movie is presenting ACTUAL propaganda. We’re saying it’s a play on how Western media, especially American media, uses caricatures (in this case, angry violent brown men shooting machine guns and rocket launchers) to scare audiences into accepting said caricatures as truth. In this sense, it’s almost ANTI-propaganda because it’s such a ridiculous and over-the-top scene. It’s not far off from how Arab men are actually treated by our media conglomerates though. People still eat it up and accept it as accurate. The War on Terror is a prime example. Media from that time is rife with caricatures and misrepresentations of people western governments decided were the villiains…when, in reality, the war on terror was built on a lie and entire nations are still demonized for that lie… - Caleb

So here's the details on the casting of Marty McFly. The director, Robert Zemeckis, wanted Michael J Fox for the role from the get go but Fox was on a sitcom called Family Ties and they couldnt work out scheduling so they had to look elsewhere. They got Eric Stolz. Now Stolz wasn't a bad guy or mean to the rest of the cast. He was a method actor who had just come off of an Oscar nominated drama called Mask where he played the lead role. As a method actor, Eric had to get into the character and in action scenes he had to go more real. Like he'd asked for real punches and basically treat it like a real fight. He also asked to be referred to as Marty on set. Most importantly Zemeckis just felt like Stolz wasn't landing the comedic tone the way he wanted. They shot the scene where Biff and Marty pick a fight in the school cafeteria and pretty much the beginning of the movie up until the scene at the mall. During filming of the mall scene was when Zemeckis decided to fire Stolz and at that point they went to work ironing out a schedule for Michael J Fox and they got him. They had to reshoot everything with Fox but rumor has it that they kept some shots with Stolz in the film.

Marty just brought himself back a little earlier. 37:31 there will never be a remake or any other versions of it while Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis is alive. They’ve shot down so many scripts. I love how all three movies are so focused on the set looking very similar and in different eras the same business but different name. 40:03 I’d love to be able to go back and see my parents younger. My dad had a brain tumor before I was born and most my life he was disabled and not his strong self. It was "open containers" that was illegal.

That movie trilogy is my absolute favorite since early childhood! Funny thing is I got a Back to the future cartoon before the movie trilogy. I still remember the day when my mom bought the entire trilogy on VHS tapes way back in 1996. I think I still have them somewhere.

Fun fact: the song that plays while Marty is racing to school at the beginning is "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, and Huey Lewis happens to be the guy who told Marty and his bad they were too loud. This movie could not have been cast better(thank god Eric Stoltz was let go and replaced with Michael)! Fox and Lloyd have insane chemistry both on and off screen and are still close friends to this day.

Another "attention to details" easter egg in the movie was near the end - the band at the dance is the "Marvin Berry Band". When Marty plays the song "Johnny B Good", the injured Marvin phones his brother Chuck, saying he found his new song for him. Of course, the real Chuck Berry is generally credited with the first true rock n roll song in the 50s....Johnny B Good. 🙂
@treetopjones7379 ай бұрын
The first rock ’n roll record was ‘Rocket 88’, recorded by Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee 1951. Jackie Brenston and co. were actually Ike Turner And His Kings Of Rhythm, and rock ’n roll was little more than a slang term for sex.

48:11 The generation that preceded the Baby Boomers was called The Silent Generation. The generation before that who were the parents of the Baby Boomers and who fought in WWII, were called the Greatest Generation. Like Gen X, the Silent Generation is/was a small generation. They're sometimes called The Children of the Great Depression since that is when most of them were born.

Not entirely correct, plenty of parents of us younger boomers did NOT fight in WW II. Last boomer year was 1964.

The same actors played both parents in both decades (prosthetics were used for the 1985 versions.)

There are a lot of details in the early part of the movie that are important later on. You recognized the change of the mall from Twin Pines to Lone Pine. Then the Clock tower struck by lightening, the way Marty's parents met, Uncle Jailbird Joey, Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. The parallels between Marty and George feeling insecure and lacking confidence .

I always wondered if the Geroge McFly from the newer better timeline saw Star Wars twenty years later and simply assumed that there was this crazy alien called Darth Vader who liked to threaten kids named George into making good life decisions and writing sci-fi stories.

Nice head canon. (Headcanon is an individual’s interpretation of the events/world of a work of fiction, canon is the literal events of said work of fiction/franchise, sequels and prequels can be rendered non-canon by original creators at any point, if the ideas and events put forward don’t align with their own creative vision, an example being the Halloween franchise, continuity is when there’s internal consistency with characters, objects and places and plots involving them, between appearances, for example plot holes/errors are when something breaks the internal consistency or continuity of a story, for example a character might be stated to have nieces, nephews, or to be an aunt or uncle to a child of unspecified gender, as such implying the existence of brothers, sisters or non-gendered siblings, an plot hole/continuity error would be later episodes saying that the only relative the character has is a sibling who never had kids, if there’s no indication that the previously mentioned siblings with kids died, and/or their kids died with them, then it’s a continuity error.)

Yeah, maybe even specifically Californian kids named George, since Lucas is originally from Modesto.
@treetopjones7379 ай бұрын
Maybe George convinced himself it was just a dream he had of that alien. Personally, I'd wonder if the future cool George kept this guy Marty helping him a secret, and his wife kept quiet about this unusual boy she knew. Marty would keep quiet because he wouldn't want to upset his new cooler life.

(Cameo) Huey Lewis said, "you're too darn loud" to his own song. Part II & III filmed together, 1 year wait between them. Part II used (as you will see) "new" or better technology for the first time (or something like that).

I saw this in the theater in 1985, and I was SO confused how they made those "old" actors look young. Not immediately realizing it's the other way around. Very effective make-up, and it's good to see new generations are just as impressed and confused by it all.

Was 10 years old when this movie came out and watched it at the local theater. Needless to say I was blown away. I really envy people who watch it for the first time now, but I do enjoy watching their reactions to this masterpiece of a trilogy. Even though it’s almost 40 years old it holds up remarkably well. Marty and Doc are so good together. The 2023 reunion was both heartwarming and heartbreaking for me to watch because of Fox’s health issues and Lloyd’s advanced age. 😢

Marty’s band’s audition song is The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News. The Judge who tells Marty he’s “just too darn loud” is Huey Lewis himself 😊

I live a few minutes away from the mall where they filmed Back to the future. Of course, it's not called twin pines but on the 30th anniversary. My girlfriend got to take a picture In front of the sign when they change the name to twin pines mall for a day. I had to work so I couldn't be there.

So many fun facts about this movie. It is shown at college film courses as the almost perfect movie. The mall is located in Puente Hills CA about 25 miles east of LA. The mall sign is inside the mall though the mall has suffered the same fate as most males now. 😕

@MegMage Reacts - heres some trivia for you - The teacher who said "Im afraid youre just too darnn loud" was Huey Lewis.. the guy that did the soundtrack for the movie lol - In the coffee shop, that was a lack of prosthetics on Biff... that was his actual normal look.. he was wearing prosthetics when you first saw him at the start of the movie to make him look older. - During filming, they wanted a real spit take from Michael when he takes a pull of the booze bottle in the car. normally there is just something like ice tea in it. They switched out the ice tea for real booze.. the spit take was legit - he didnt know there was real booze in the flask lol. - The girl that played Jennifer isnt in parts 2 and 3. She wound up having to give up her role because she needed to tend to her dying mother. The role was recast with Elizabeth Shue. - Crispin Glover (George McFly) also isnt in subsequent movies. He got too big for his britches and wanted to much money so they cut him loose. He then sued them when in subsequent movies they used his likeness and voice without his permission. The person playing him was another actor. - That wasnt real manure.. lol Tom Wilison (Biff) is actually a comedian.. he stirred things up with his "Question Song" which is about fans constantly bothering him about his BTTF days.. lol heres the song if you want to watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6iulIOIeLtpmKs

Truly a phenomenon of the 1980s. Don't talk about this era of film without this classic. 1 of 2 films that starred Michael J. Fox in the same year while doing the tv series, Family Ties and one of Christopher Lloyd's most iconic roles ever. Blending the genres of science fiction, adventure and comedy in a way that was undenialble. Changing one's past or even altering the future of one place or many people does mess with your head at first. But it is all good fun and affected a lot of us as viewers, I watched this on video and was blown away by it at age 5. Huey Lewis and The News with their 2 songs (Power of Love, Back In Time) are true classics still great. One of Spielberg's legendary productions, No.1 film of 1985 and Oscar-winner for Best Sound Effects Editing. Wendie Jo Sperber (Marty's sister) passed away in 2005. By all means, please react to the sequels as they are perfection too.

Here you are a small remrque to the end of the film... In 1955 the people thought that the cars of the 80th will be flying. refering to this: "where we going to, we don't need roads..."
