The sad thing is that the fan base pretty much agreed that Henry was a great choice for Superman. The people who dislike it object to the film they built around him. Think Pierce Brosnan as Bond, but in the terrible Die Another Day installment.
@acereporter73 Жыл бұрын
Henry deserved *WAY* better. He was so up for this role and the studio kept stepping on rakes and smashing themselves in the face. They wanted to shake-and-bake their way to an Avengers movie without taking the time and care to develop each character on their own, make the audience want more of them. It was just frustrating to watch when great talent was RIGHT THERE.

Not just that. The title "Man of Steel" implies that there is a human among us who is not really human and is as strong as steel...god among men if you will. Also calling the film Man of Steel rather than Superman shows very very clearly that the character isn't yet fully formed as Superman. It's an origin story. In the comics, there was a Kryptonian scientist named Jax-Ur who was sentenced to the Phantom Zone for destroying the inhabited Kryptonian moon, Wegthor, while experimenting with a nuclear warhead equipped rocket. Presumably, he was in the Phantom Zone when Zod's insurgents are sentenced there, and later, he is with them when they escape. He's the scientist that finds out where the Kryptonian Codex ACTUALLY is (he takes Clark's blood).

I fell out of love with the story a little more in each passing movie, but you aren't going to have Batman V Superman Trailer #2 deflate all of that hype for you like it did for everyone else. It was a crazy time. It's not any one aspect over another, but... I mean. They marketed Man of Steel with a Gillette sponsorship, and there were all of these little ads asking different celebrities "How does the Man of Steel shave?" and in five years, there was mustache-gate, because this dude was filming another movie and that movie contractually prohibited him from shaving a particularly walrus-y mustache that ultimately had to be CGI'd out of the reshoots. It is nightmare fuel.

There's some explanation in the other comments, but I'll offer a brief one as well about the rise, fall, and rise of the Synderverse. DC's Superhero brand was springing out of Nolan's Batman, which was a phenomenon; but Marvel was raking in the dough like crazy by making their heroes a lifestyle brand. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Avengers (2012) came out in the same year, but kids weren't begging their parents for backpacks with Tom Hardy's Bane or Christian Bale's Batman on them in 2013. And when Man of Steel came out in 2013, it was very much informed tonally by the Dark Knight trilogy. You can feel the weight, and the intentional maturity; fundamentally, it's more action/drama than action/comedy. So when Man of Steel didn't blow Avengers out of the water, Warner Brothers scrambled, and studio interferance came down to restrain Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (starting with them insisting to have 'Batman Vs Superman' stuffed in the title somewhere). Fans were, to put it mildly, divided by its quality of storytelling. By the time we got to Suicide Squad (2016) and Justice League (2017), it was clear Warner Brothers was trying to inject more color, comedy, and lifestyle vivacity into their brand. They weren't keen on epic dramas; they wanted a money-printing, ever expanding universe. And they were trying to do it off the back of Man of Steel, the tone of which did not lend to that at all. A trainwreck ensued. Later, we got the Batman Vs Superman 'Ultimate Edition', restored with much more of Zack's initial vision for the movie and commitment to that tone. Fans are not at all divided on that being far superior to the theatrical release. We'll have to wait for you to see Zack Snyder's Justice League, but the story of how that came to be is a genuine milestone moment in cinema history. It begins with DC fans feeling robbed and confused after the Justice League theatrical release, introduces rumors of an all-but-complete version of the Justice League movie that was so different it was elementally another movie, and ends with a fan campaign that raised awareness of demand for that movie, as well as $600,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The fact that a modern studio listened and even bankrolled the Snydercut, even experimentally, and exposed for the first time this dramatic, side-by-side comparison of Director Versus Studio visions, has never been done before. The vindication was so sweet I can't describe it; but in the aftermath, Warner Brothers has struggled with nailing what kind of tone fans want, what is most profitable longterm for the shareholders, and how to please a fanbase that is so divided between blaming Snyder and Cavill or exalting them. If you continue to watch the DCEU movies after ZSJL, you'll be able to see and intuit the awkwardness and vascillation about what is to be done, exactly, with this particular Superman. The killing blow came in late 2022. Cavill had been doing small cameos in other superhero movies and interviews about how he was hoping to do more work as Superman. On October 25 2022, he released a video on Twitter telling fans that he had been given the green light, and that he would indeed be returning to the big screen as Superman. And then, on December 14, he released post on Twitter explaining that this wouldn't be the case after all - he graciously talked about how his time to wear the cape was over and he looked forward to seeing what came after. The whiplash of these two announcements within weeks of each other has so badly damaged many fan's trust of the Warner Brothers DC brand that it's difficult to tell if it will ever recover. Looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the DCEU; even the questionable stuff. Expecially interested in how you approach the mismatched twins, Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League. The traditionally accepted path for reactors seems to be to watch the Snydercut, and forget the cinematic release exists. That's probably the purest way to experience the story. But if you want to experience it the way fans did, and if you want to react no only to the story but to the fascinating comparison of the two versions, you may wish to watch the Cinematic version first, make your best guesses about what might have been cut, or altered, or reshot... and then watch Zack Snyder's Justice League to see how right you were. It might sell fewer backpacks than Avengers, but Zack Snyder's Justice League is a unique phenomenon in cinema history.

The thing that happened was 1) WB messed with Snyders vision, first they forced him to edit 30 minutes out of BVS to make room for more ticket sales. Then they edited David Ayers Suicide Squad to be more like Guardians of the Galaxy without David's approval. Then after Snyder had to leave they had Joss Whedon come in to basically remake Justice League by removing over 3 hours of footage, shooting an additional hour to be more campy (Superman & everyone smiling more, including Batman) then they kept flip flopping the tones of the films. One film was serious, the next campy, then campy and serious. It made no sense. 2) Fans unfortunately didn't gravitate to it because they only know these characters based on other versions on TV. They don't read comics & Snyder made these films more comic accurate. As you said, your friend said Henry didn't smile enough & that's basically what many were doing lying or misremembering what they felt. Metropolis wasn't destroyed, but people said it was & many said it was Superman that did it. This type of revisionist stuff many believed or went in with already thinking that. In fact the same is going on now with Joker 2. 3) Media jumped on negativity & with many who don't actually read articles and just look at headlines it hurt the films. It wasn't campy or funny & with a couple of exceptions (Logan, Joker, etc) many see comic book films as kids only so when it's not kid friendly they complain.

My first time getting into superman was when he died in the comics. That was one hell of a battle over 5 comics. I remember my buddy as a kid had superman 75 (his death) in a glass case I was 9 and jealous as i was a huge comic fan (and still am) next year (around fall 1993) I found the death issue, a first print newstand edition, at a farmers market. The vender was willing to sell it to me for $5.00 although it went for $10.00 but informed he had to leave soon. so I ran all over that place and found grandpa and got my $5.00 and ran back to him to get it. That started my interest in him and it continues today.

I think the term you meant to say was Eugenics not Epigenetics Also, a lot of people really have a problem with how Jon dies. My take on it - as a father - is this: his main priorities have been 2 things his wife and his son. By telling Clark to take his mother and not help his father, Jon makes sure his wife is safe by being with Clark, and his son is protected by not exposing his powers which are still very unrefined at this point. He was simply being a dad by making sure his family was safe.

@@Werewolf914idk how that argument is even remotely valid in people’s minds, clearly Clark isn’t in control of his powers yet, and people wanted him to just speed through and save his dad ? 99% chance he messes up and his dad’s spine ends up 50 miles south
@passionsquietrage8 ай бұрын
I agree with this. While it was a different take on his death(instead of the usual heart attack), it does make sense. Clark's powers might have gone out of control, and someone might have seen him using them. So Johnathan sacrificed himself to save both Martha and Clark.
@stsamurai_10 ай бұрын
I agree Clark not saving his Dad was a bit silly, but if you think about it logically it’s a stretch the movie mates to emphasize the point that the world WILL change once they know about him. You have to admit, Clark is still a bit immature in that instance in the way he’s arguing with his parents how a normal teenager would, which reinforces the fact that he’s still a bit young and naïve and not ready to go out into the world and show them what he can do just yet. His father knew this, but it still makes it all the more painful that something like that happened. Even in the comics, John’s Kent’s death is incredibly impactful, as he dies of a heart attack, maybe the ONLY thing Clark couldn’t have prevented with all his abilities and powers. It showed that at the end of the day as powerful as he is, in some ways, he’s still not God.

I had the pleasure of meeting Zack Snyder and telling him how much this version of Superman means to me. He outlined how he doesn’t necessarily perceive this version of Clark as “dark”, but just real. He has problems and dilemmas that don’t have easy answers. I think it works as a different interpretation of an iconography and story that has been so engrained in culture. I find it funny how Batman has been allowed so much reinterpretation but Superman somehow isn’t afforded the same experimentation.

Dan DiDio asked Garth Ennis to write Superman back in 2016 precisely because "the problem with everyone writing Superman is they all revert to being five". Snyder similarly doesn't see Clark from the lens of a five-yr-old in need of an infallible dad that must never be questioned, made to doubt, and should have all the answers for everything everywhere. Clark isn't a dark character and Man of Steel isn't a dark movie, it's just one that respects the character as he exists in the modern world and doesn't view him as a stand-in for something to worship in place of the Old Testament God.

From my experience people who throw words around like "dark", "light", "hope" in relationship to Superman and how he "must" be often times don't have the words to do articulate what they really think. I always get the impression that what they really want is comfort, not hope. Those are very different things. To me, Man of Steel is comforting because I see person who I identify with overcome very difficult, very realistic odds despite his own imperfections. For other people who are more inconsolable, they need to be tricked into believing everything will be ok by concocting a situation where nothing bad could have ever happened. This, I believe is the real issue.

That plinkers shoot it, while sitting on front porches, because that's one way to kill flies and get target practice at the same time! 😅
@tekunin5407 Жыл бұрын
59:40 Honestly Meg, there's a ton of factors that happened, but at the core was the previous heads at DC/Warner Brothers were desperate to start their own Comic Film Universe to compete with Marvel Studios, especially since they were coming off of the Dark Knight Trilogy. They hired Zack Snyder to kick start the DCEU with Man of Steel, and he had an entire RoadMap painted out, collaborative plans with other Directors like Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and James Wan (Aquaman), plans to include the Green Lanterns, etc. However, Man of Steel didn't pull in Box Office numbers like Pre Endgame MCU did, and fans/critics were critical of a Comic film, and a Superman film on top of that, that was more thought provoking, darker and not along the MCU's tried and true methods of simple formula and light humor. It didn't help that last time there was a Live Action Superman was Christopher Reeve, and people kept unfairly comparing Henry's Superman to Reeves, especially considering the modern times and eras of both. So, following MOS, Warner Brothers started to interfere alot more with the projects instead of trusting the Directors, Cast and Crew with it. Suicide Squad 1 and Batman vs Superman were examples of studio interference behind the scenes. And as studios like Fox proved with the Fantastic Four reboot or Kathleen Kennedy with Star Wars (years later) its never a good thing. When Justice League was in mid production, Zack Snyder had to leave production because his family suffered a terrible tragedy, his daughter Autumn unfortunately passed away, having took her own life. When Zack left, WB hired Joss Whedon because of the jobs he did for Marvel for Avengers 1 and Age of Ultron. However, they cut like 90 percent of the material Zack had already shot for JL, and Whedon made everyone's lives on set a living hell, including but not limited to threatening and harassing Gal Gadot, reshoots and forced crude humor, racist behavior to Ray Fisher etc. but Warner Bros still kept Zack Snyder's name on the Whedon cut as a scapegoat. And then their version of Justice League was the ungodly dumpster fire we were all subjected to as fans :( After Discovery had purchased Warner Bros, they knew too much damage had been done to the franchise by the previous Heads and people like Joss Whedon. James Gunn, who directed Suicide Squad 2 and as you know all the Guardians of the Galaxy Films, was hired on to create the new DCU. However, after the mess of Josstice League, and the fact that all the big cast members like Henry, Ben, Gal etc. were all on team Zack, WB decided to get rid of them all. Henry being one of the first to pay the Studio's mistakes. Even though people like the Rock (Black Adam) fought tooth and nail to get Henry back, the damage was done, and James Gunn, as much as we don't want him too, is basically having to wipe the slate clean with his new DCU. Also it didn't help that there was public backlash against actors like Ezra Miller and Amber Heard, for their various reasons. But yea, that's basically it, although certain actors are carrying over into the new DCU, Peacemaker and Blue Beetle are also able to fit into either continuity. The new heads of DC decided that, after the merger, we the fans and Zack especially, were owed the proper cut of Justice League, so after over 4 years of fighting for it, and with the previous heads of DC saying "There's no Snyder Cut", "You'll never see it" and "Joss Whedon's JL is the definitive version" we were given the proper Team Up, at least before everything changes. There's a lot more shit behind the scenes I didn't mention, but yea that's basically the long and short of it.
@richardb6260 Жыл бұрын
Well, there was no Snyder cut without spending another $30 million first. MOS certainly provoked a lot of thought in me. But they probably weren't the ones you're thinking of.

I would correct in the part about MoS not making the money. It became the most successful Superman movie at the box office and did way more than any of the Marvel movies of Phase One. And it was WB that wanted to double down with the darker themes too. It was until later that they felt the movie was too long that they started to wanting more changes (they also wanted stupid changes on MoS but Nolan helped Snyder to fight back and not to have his cut) and it wasn't until the movie came out and critics happened because of the tone and the weird rhythm that they panicked and wanted many changes with Suicide Squad, WW and JL.
@passionsquietrage8 ай бұрын
The theatrical version of JL isn't that bad, but it could have been a little better. WB should have just Snyder do his thing and they would have made money. One of many reasons the studio should never be involved in anything past financing and distributing the movie.

@@brown_recluse_human3458 I don't think the hostility is warranted but I agree that not every adaptation / interpretation needs to be a carbon copy. Bruce Wayne is my favorite character in all of literature and yet I love many different takes on him. Whether it's B:TAS, Year One, The Batman, TDK trilogy, Batman (1966), Batman: The Brave and the Bold, etc. These characters are very maliable but I think it's foolish to deny that the characters can be changed too much. The Injustice Superman is basically a different character but that works in context because evil Superman is the "What if...?" concept of the whole story. Man of Steel is great but it's not claiming this isn't Superman. It's not just an elseworld story where big core thematic changes can just be swept under the rug. If Smallville Clark, S:TAS Clark or Reeve Clark saw MOS Clark about to kill Zod they would have tried to stop him or would've told him to turn himself in if they failed. Might sound silly but that's what would happen. After a certain point of change it's no longer the character we know. Characters aren't their abilities. They are their actions and beliefs. Clark in S:TAS isn't exactly the same in Smallville but I love and accept both. I'm not just being rigid for drawing a line in the sand. Edit: I don't hate Man of Steel. I think it's great but to me Jonathan Kent says things that are way out of character and Clark killing is ooc. Henry even said that the snap was his reason why he'll never kill again. Meaning the man had to kill to learn killing is bad. No. The way he was raised is what made him such a Super Man.
