The Norse gods were always viewed as different amongst the various pantheons of the world mainly because they were protectors of humanity instead of oppressive, demanding tyrants like the Greek and Egyptian gods were (Especially Zeus, hooooo boy). Thor the Thunderer, in particular, was quite fond of mortals, and also very fond of picking fights with giants. His hammer, Mjolnir, was forged by the dwarves Eitri and Brokkr, but a flaw in it's design cut the handle off too short. They also forged for him his belt of strength Megingjord, which doubled his already prodigious might, and the invulnerable gauntlets Jarngreipr, which were necessary for him to be able to catch Mjolnir as he threw it. Loki is actually Thor's uncle in the myths, and is known as the god of Mischief, a powerful sorcerer and illusionist. Loki has had multiple children. Sleipnir, Odin's 8 legged horse, when Loki took on the form of a great mare to distract the great stallion Svadilfari, so that his jotun master would not build Asgard's walls before the deadline (as they had promised him Freyja if he could). The other 3 were borne of Angrboda, a giantess that Loki loved. They were the Fenris wolf, a gigantic dire wolf fated to swallow the sun and moon, and Odin, at Ragnarok; Jormungandr, the world serpent, who was only contained by forcing it to bite its own tail, and who is destined to be the end of Thor in the Last Battle; and Hel, a girl who is half alive and half dead, set to rule over the dark realm of Niflhel, where the dishonored dead are cast when they die. Odin's wife is Frigga, goddess of marriage, prophecy, and motherhood. One of their children is Baldr, the Shining God, most beautiful of all, whom Frigga protected by requiring an oath never to harm him from ALL objects on earth, as his death was a harbinger of Ragnarok. If nothing could harm him, then he would never die, and Ragnarok would not happen, was the reasoning. The only thing not asked to swear an oath was mistletoe, which was considered so unthreatening that it wasn't necessary. Loki learned of this and made a spear out of mistletoe, and gave it to Baldr's brother, the blind god Hodr, who wanted to partake in the gods' new pastime of hurling things at Baldr without hurting him. He cast the spear, and it pierced Baldr in the heart, instantly killing him. Norse mythology is awesome and everyone should read the eddas :D

The Norse gods were actually 2 different races united by marriage. Odin was Aesir, interested in conflict, and the Vanir which were into agrculture etc. His wife Frigga was Vanir. Loki was actually the blood brother of Odin and was half god and half giant. His mother was Laufey (changed to male in the MCU)

Norse gods... most of our days are named after them. Tuesday named after the Norse god Tyr, Wednesday named after the main Norse god Odin (old spelling Woden morphed to Wednesday), Thursday named after Thor, Friday named after the Norse goddes Frig. Most people say the names of the main Norse deities every week without knowing it.

This was done so well. Kenneth Branagh took such a great approach with the source material making Asgard and its lore appropriately grandiose and operatic. That's the only way Thor would have worked. This is why I always felt that he and Captain America were going to be the biggest challenges for Marvel Studios to get right at the time. Speaking of which, yes Captain America is up next and you will be seeing that interesting cosmic cube again. Loki does possess the ability to enchant people and subtly influence minds. Imagine for a moment if he wielded a conduit similar to Thor's hammer that could enhance and amplify that power. : )

If only Loki had schemed a little less, he might have come out of all this well. If when he visited Thor on Earth he had told him the truth things would have gone very differently when Thor's friends visited him. And if he had done his best to be a good king while he was standing in for Odin, who knows how things would have gone? But his jealousy drove him to such great lengths that it all came crashing down.

"I like Thor's idea", that's the thing, war is generally rash, without thought to the lives that it would ruin. Odin sees beyond impulsion in this movie at the start. War with the Frost Giants could mean certain death, not only to Asgardians but others across the Nine Realms if the fight spills over to other realms. The path of peace should always be the one that's most desired, war should be a last resort...real life should have taught us all that by now. Has a single war in real life ever ended without tragedy of some sort? Not that I can think of. Men, women, children lost to time by violence. Weapons of mass destruction created to kill. So yeah, I agree with Odin and his lessons about peace and being smart about when war is NECESSARY, and not seeking it out

Loved your reaction. The heart of this movie is a father trying to teach his son valuable lessons on what it means to be not only a leader but a man. Father's discipline differently than mom's it does seem harsh but it about allowing your son to make mistakes but giving them way to see the importance of their wisdom. Thor was vain and greedy; he was wanted to prove himself through combat. But his father's wisdom that is not what makes a man or leader. It is about caring about those men and women around and you being a good man not about strength and fighting. "A wise king never seeks war but must always be prepared for it." Very key. God lesson for men. This reminds me of my father so much on how he tried to show me the wisdom of his experiences. Every day I realize more and more how much of my dad's discipline was done with love.

15:34 In the comics, Odin wanted Thor to learn humility and erased his Asgardian memories and put Mjolnir in a cave. Thor was transformed into a human doctor with a lame leg, named Dr. Donald Blake. The Nurse that he hired for his office was Jane Foster. When Odin put hm to the test, he gave Dr. Blake the urge to travel to Norway. He encountered a scouting force of Aliens and was chased into a seaside cave and lost his cane. Exhausted and frustrated, he found a piece of driftwood that he tried to use as a cane but found no other exit. He got angry and smacked the driftwood against the rocks. The stick revealed to be Mjolnir and the human doctor revealed as Thor, God of Thunder.

Hey, Colette! Thor was probably the trickiest character to translate but a critical character to make credible as Loki figures prominently in the Avengers' future. The approach to Thor early in the saga is a pseudo-Shakespearean representation as opposed to the more comedic interpretation of the later films. I much prefer serious Thor as he is much more comic book-authentic. I think "Thor" succeeds on every level and it is my favorite Phase 1 film! In the comics, Thor is the actual Norse God of Thunder but, in the MCU, he is a long-lived alien from planet Asgard whose people have been to Midgard (Earth) and thought of as gods. Marvel's Thor was created in 1962 by writer Stan Lee and penciler Jack Kirby and was the lead feature in the anthology title "Journey into Mystery" until getting his own title. Lee needed someone who could hold his own against the Hulk. Since Hulk is the strongest there is, only a god would do. Comic readers were already familiar with the Greco-Roman pantheon which is practically the basis for the Justice League at DC so Lee decided to go Norse. Lee and Kirby were both familiar with Norse mythology and liked the Viking aesthetic so they ran with it. The sword and sorcery element was new to Marvel with Lee's plots and Kirby's drawings sweeping readers into cosmic high adventure balanced by Earthly concerns when Thor assumed his mortal guise of the crippled Dr. Donald Blake whose walking stick would transform into the hammer Mjolnir when struck hard against the ground. It was hotly debated for 76 issues whether Blake was a human who found the magic walking stick that filled him with Thor's spirit or if Thor was pretending to be a man when the matter was finally put to rest in issue 159 which is the basis for this film. To teach his arrogant son humility, Odin cast Thor out of Asgard to live as an infirm human with no memory of godhood but he unknowingly passes his father's test by becoming a compassionate doctor. His memory restored, Thor casts off the Blake identity and becomes Thor again full-time. The plot element of Loki being a Frost-Giant foundling adopted by Odin is from the gorgeous third volume of Thor written by J. Michael Straczynski, illustrated by Olivier Coipel and published in the 2000s. It is widely agreed that the 45-issues written and drawn by Walt Simonson in the '80's is gold standard "Thor" and essential reading since Simonson mined proper Norse mythology to plot his run on the book. All three key creators appear in cameos in the film. There is an element pulled from another version of Thor that plays a role in this movie. Marvel created a secondary universe in 2000 called the Ultimate Universe in order to boost readership by providing access to familiar characters without having to learn 40 years of back story. The MCU draws upon many Ultimate Universe details such as having an African-American rather than an Italian-American Nick Fury. Ultimate Thor is never believed to be a god and is thought of as insane which is how he is first received by everyone in the movie. Kenneth Branagh was an inspired choice of director as he is known for his many Shakespeare productions and passion for the Bard. He infused the proceedings with gravitas that elevated the material and the characters echo of Prince Hal, Falstaff, Iago and Lear. The production design beautifully blends the divine, the medieval and the futuristic with Asgard's golden spires evoking heavenly Valhalla, the world's disc-like shape evoking a flat Earth of the Middle Ages and Heimdall's observatory evoking alien supertech that stabilizes wormholes accurately referred to as Einstein-Rosen bridges. The Bifrost itself isn't a rainbow but a crystal construct that shimmers prismatically. The Worlds Tree Yggdrasil is just a graphical representation of the nine planets accessible through the Asgardian wormhole. Although classified as planets in the film, they remain the Nine Realms of Norse myth which include Asgard, realm of the gods, Vanaheim, a fantasy realm of demi-gods, Midgard, home of humankind, Alfheim, home of the Elves, Svartalfheim, home of the Dark Elves, Jotunheim, home of the Frost-Giants, Nidavellir, home of the Dwarves, Muspelheim, the fiery realm of the demon Surtur and Niflheim, the icy realm of the Dead. The cast is phenomenal! Chris Hemsworth was in contention with his brother Liam for the part and won it. He carries the character easily in both dramatic and comedic situations and it has become his signature role. Tom Hiddleston's casting as Loki was equally important because his role going forward in the saga would be crucial and his villainy would be layered. Branagh had worked with him before on the "Wallander" TV series and recommended him. Hiddleston owns the part and is a sheer delight; a relatable villain you simultaneously root for and hate! Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as Odin and he radiates majesty. The scene where he strips Thor of his power was completely ad-libbed and left the other actors shaken! Natalie Portman as Jane Foster was changed from a physician in the comics to an astrophysicist in the film but she always exudes intelligence and was credible. She and Hemsworth have great chemistry and their lust is palpable! Fine support is lent by Colm Feore as the sinister Laufey, Rene Russo as the nurturing Frigga, Idris Elba as the wise Heimdall, Stellan Skarsgard as the awestruck Dr. Erik Selvig, Kat Dennings as the snarky Darcy Lewis and Clark Gregg as the unflappable Son of Coul, Agent Phil Coulson. The comic-accurate Warriors Three are on hand as well with Ray Stevenson as burly Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as grim Hogun, Josh Dallas as dashing Fandral and Jaimie Alexander as bold Lady Sif. Jeremy Renner makes his first appearance as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, Maximiliano Hernandez makes his first movie appearance as Agent Jasper Sitwell and Samuel L. Jackson's Col. Nick Fury pops in with the Tesseract. TRIVIA: 1. Mjolnir, the name of Thor's hammer which Darcy finds unpronounceable, translates as "Grinder" in English. In the comics, it is made from uru metal or the super-dense solidified molten core of a neutron star. As stars collapse upon themselves prior to going supernova, the cores become super-dense which accounts for Mjolnir's great weight. Only Odin's enchantment makes it portable by a pure soul. 2. The New Mexico town is a set that was modernized after its previous use as a Western town in Lawrence Kasdan's "Silverado" in 1985! 3. The events of "Iron Man 2", "The Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" all occur during one week in MCU-time called Fury's Big Week! EASTER EGGS: 1. Odin's pet ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory) alight on his throne during the coronation. The ravens are Odin's eyes and ears in his kingdom. 2. Odin arrives on Jotunheim to rescue Thor and company astride his eight-legged horse Sleipnir! 3. Odin's treasure room contains the Tuning Fork, the Tablet of Life and Time, the Warlock's Eye, the Eternal Flame, the Casket of Ancient Winters and a mock Infinity Gauntlet! 4. The name tag and false ID given to Thor bear the name of his comic book alter-ego Donald Blake! 5. A sign advertising New Mexico tourism says 'Journey into Mystery' which was the title of the comic in which Thor debuted! 6. The 10th-century Norwegian village assaulted by the Frost-Giants in flashback is Tonsberg which is featured in the World War II setting of "The First Avenger". 7. The colleague Selvig refers to who was studying gamma radiation can only be Bruce Banner! CAMEOS: The three seminal writers of Thor appear in cameo! 1. Stan Lee is the pick-up driver who tries to wrench the hammer free with his truck only to lose the flatbed. 2. Walter Simonson is seen in Asgard at the closing celebratory banquet between Sif and Volstagg. 3. J. Michael Straczynski is the first local seen in close-up trying to pull the hammer out of the crater. END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. Nick Fury presents the Tesseract to Dr. Selvig for study at Project Pegasus. If you see the movies chronologically, this is the third time it appears. If you see the movies in release order, this is your first glimpse of this artifact. The next chronological stop in the MCU are the framing scenes of "Captain America: The First Avenger" which take place in 2011.

Thor is a god of german religions not greek. German and greek religions are different but related indirectly; you can look up Indo-European religion if it interests you. The german gods collectively are called Aesir (and Vanir another family of gods). Loki is frost giant who became part of the Aesir though the explanation has been lost. His characteristics are bit muddled, but in the stories he is generally a trickster god who gets the Aesir in trouble as much as he gets them out of trouble. There's one story of Thor sent as a bride of a Frost Giant. Thor is frequently the butt of jokes as a god who rushes in blindly. In the religion the Aesir are not invulnerable. There is a prophecy in which they are all killed. In the religion they are not immortal but must periodically eat magic apples to rejuvenate. In the movie also they are not immortal and Odhin is in process of dying. He goes in a coma to get stronger, but he is still nearing his end. His wife is Frigg is also capable of illusions with the suggestion that she taught Loki. Yes, the end of Ironman is finding the hammer in New Mexico where Odhin threw it in the beginning of this movie. It becomes a device in later movies that only the worthy can lift Mjolnir. Many try and fail. Loki is written poorly with his motivations changing every few scenes.

Interesting point. Loki (or Loge) seems to have a defined role to play, that of the source of ideas toward action, and also to be the one who causes trouble and is then punished for it, then escape. We might recognise The Joker in this. In the MCU films and TV series, he seems to be trying to break out of that role and into a more free role of adventurer / troublemaker.

@@stevetheduck1425 Aesir!Loki is sometimes hypothesized to have started as a fire god. Given that fire is both essential to survival and technology as well as deadly and painful if loosed from its controls, that could explain Aesir!Loki's behavior. MCU!Loki started with the trickster role and has developed as Huddleston proves able.

Also ..... if Odin had sat Loki down as a child and told him his true parentage, Loki probably would've grown up a very different person, and he might not have resented his family as much. Odin's not exactly father of the millenium.

A lot of things about the MCU that people gloss over? The acting. And sometimes the dialogue scenes. The Banishment scene with Anthony Hopkins and Chris Hemsworth is pretty much a master class. Hopkins voice is actually breaking with sadness over what he decides to do with Thor after his son nearly started a war with the Jotuns, but it kinda hearkens back to any father/son relationship of "I dont take any pleasure in this punishment, son ....BUT YOU GONNA LEARN TODAY!" He starts out softly then it elevates into frustration and then shouting as Thor gets dressed down (quite literally) then has all his power taken away. He had to humbled before he could truly be worthy of his responsibilities.

Tom Hiddleston originally signed on to be Thor. Got the part. But to Tom really loved the character. To the point he said "you know. I don't think I can't do this part justice. But I know someone would" and that's how Chris Hemsworth the part. And Riddles on thought he'd play a better Loki then Thor. Just like how Christopher Lee got the part to play gandalf, his favorite lord of the rings character. And gave it up because he felt he was too old to play a vibrate gandalf to do it justice. So he played suruman instead recommended his friend Sir Ian McKellan.

Christopher Lee _wanted_ to play Gandalf, but Ian McKellan had already been cast. It was kind of awkward because he didn't know this when auditioning. You have to wonder how that would have worked out, as Christopher Lee _had_ actually been picked to play Gandalf _by Tolkien himself_ when he was still alive. He was the only one involved with the films who had _actually met him._

Blame the fans, they tried to keep him serious with The Dark World but people said it was too dark and ambitious so they did Ragnorok more lighthearted and was the bigger hit so they kept on that path, tbh I think the Dark World is a good movie and opened the door for a lot of plots still being explored

Hey, Colette! You've skipped "The Incredible Hulk"! The events of "The Incredible Hulk" occur during the same week in-universe as the events of "Iron Man 2" and "Thor"! See it next before you watch "Captain America: The First Avenger". "Incredible Hulk", like the Spider-Man movies, are owned by another studio even though they are MCU characters which is why the films are not on DPlus. DO NOT SKIP "THE INCREDIBLE HULK"! SEE IT NEXT.

The Incredible Hulk was distributed by Universal Studios but owned by Marvel. The characters related to the Hulk [family, friends, allies, enemies] could not be used in solo movies without first run distribution profits going to Universal. However, team movies or television shows keep the money in Marvel [and Disney's] pockets.

The Greek gods and the Norse gods (which Thor is one of) are arguably related, as the Indo-European people that migrated across Europe in waves, had a shared base culture and beliefs. Of course, the stories and names changed over time and place, but the pantheons have similarities. Thor (thunder god) is like Zeus/Jupiter, Sif/Frigg (goddess of love) are like Aphrodite/Venus, Tyr/Tiu (god of war) is like Ares/Mars, etc. The culture of English speaking people have deep Germanic/Norse roots, so these Norse gods were deeply part of the culture. Most of the days of the week are based on the Norse/Germanic gods: Sunday and Monday are named after the sun and moon gods, Tuesday is named after Tiu/Tyr, Wednesday is named after Woden/Odin, Thursday is named after Thor, and Friday is named after Frigg/Freya. The Marvel comics version of Thor changes around much of the mythology… for example, it has Loki as Thor’s brother, but he is actually his uncle. And Thor is supposed to be married to Sif, the goddess of love and beauty. I look forward to your other MCU reactions… is Avengers next?
