I'm glad you have a lot of fun being in Artist alley. I know one person who their whole job is in artists alley. I have her invest in button marker, stickers machine, she even makes her own bags and small pillow. I remember one time, she selling 6 Hobbits theme mugs and all of them sold out. She was surprised because it was out of the Norm.

OMG, YOU WERE IN SAN JAPAN! That's the convention I regularly attend! XD I hope to see you here this year! If you're ever in San Japan again, look for the table with the shirtless-Sephiroth business card holder. XD One thing I wanted to note as I'm listening to your talking points: be aware that not all cons are the same. I've been on the con-circuit for roughly 10 years. Some conventions I do really well at (San Japan being the best) while others I simply break even with. I bring this up because it's important artists not get disappointed if they did bad at one event. Sometimes, it's got nothing to do with the art or 'hot ticket items', but the audience itself. I do well at San Japan because the audience is very chilled and eager to buy anything unique and anime. Because San Antonio doesn't get too many big events like this, the audience doesn't hold back. Contrast this to Anime Expo, which has a large crowd. But because that crowd is USED to major events, they aren't in a hurry to buy stuff since they can always wait for the next con.

Totally agree with the thing about prints - yeah, they're cheap to produce, but so are books and we pay a fair amount for those. It's exactly the same reason that we pay a fair price for an artist's prints - we like the art they produce and are willing to pay a premium to own a physical version of it. I've never liked any incarnation of the argument that art should only cost as much as it took to produce it. I've had a number of people say things like "well I'm sure the materials only cost a few dollars, so why do I have to pay twenty??" The answer to that question is that my time, effort, and expertise are ALSO materials in that artwork, not just the paper and paint, and I reserve the right as the artist to price THOSE materials at a price I think is fair. /rantover

It’s so funny I feel like most people watch this while drawing but I recently starting watching these when I do makeup because I used to do my truecrime when I would get ready but I would wind up just staring and wasting time. With this I can glance over at the art, but not worry about what’s going on on the screen.

I’m in a printmaking class, the prints we do take three weeks to do but it’s ink and thick paper it takes a hell of a long time to just make 5 cause you do 100 test prints to make sure it is clear. It’s fun but it is hard

It's really nice to hear about stories like these because my first con was last year too and I want to do more despite there not being many in my area. We actually have very similar reasons for not doing and Artist Alley sooner, so that was nice to hear. Oh, I can't believe that people would put signs up asking people not to interact with them because of anxiety. I'm still recovering from really bad social anxiety but thought I was in a good enough position to try tableling with a friend just in case I had a panic attack or something. Turned out that I did all right because she was with me and because it was an extremely tame con. I just barely made back my table ($160) for that con because it was so weird. Everyone I spoke to, the artists, the voice actors, all agreed and assured me that cons aren't usually like that and they thought it was advertised as a much larger con. Lots of people packed up and left on the second and third day before it ended because they were so fed up. I won't be returning to that con. It was nice to hear the other artists and the voice actors compliment my art and buy stuff, but I'm still disappointed with that con. I'm glad that your first Artist Alley experience was better than mine.

My family will always pay for a piece of artwork that the price is set as, because if it looks nice we will absolutely buy it. Even if the printing costs like $2 per sheet, a printing company near my home is quite cheap with great quality.

I do fairs and cons sometimes (I make jewelry) and what I do is I take out $20 ahead of time and covert them to smaller bills. Sometimes I’ll do a $10 $5 and five $1s. Others times I’ll do a two $5s and ten $1s. I also have square but some people don’t have a card or they don’t want to use it.

would it be a good idea to run a food running service at conventions? like, at lunch time, just go around and offer to get people food if they pay back with a tip?

i definitely think - as someone who experiences such severe anxiety that i literally *can't* talk to random people sometimes - it's kinda silly when people put up signs like "i have anxiety, don't talk to me!1" in their own booth. like, what's the point of having a booth then? expensive exposure? i'd understand if it was a personal badge for walking the con or something but... a booth??? i get people experience different levels of severity/tolerance for social interaction, but i don't get WHY get a booth at a con while knowing about your issues if you're not going to try to use the experience to help yourself. hell, even if you're not looking to make a con into a potentially beneficial experience, you can rope in a more extroverted partner/friend/parent to help with talking to customers if need-be. it's a situation with workarounds, yknow?

I dont really think for me that the price of the thing being made is important. It's the artwork itself and the time put in that I'm buying. Especially if it's something that I'm a fan of before (i.e. Predator or the specific artist) I'm more willing to pay a little more than the average

I have to completely disagree with you with the anxiety part. You may have anxiety but not everyone's anxiety is the same. Those people may have an anxiety where talking to people is a struggle but they still want to go. If you want more people to come to a convention, it's better to be more inclusive to make things easier for others. As someone who ALSO has anxiety and depression, PLEASE do NOT use your anxiety and depression to compare to someone else's.

I personally would love to have a booth to sell art at a con, but I'm realistic enough to say my anxiety is way to bad to be able to have a booth. At least if I'm an attendee, I will have a friend who I can use as a human shield if I start having an anxiety attack.

Okay, that thing about being having a sign up about anxiety is stupid. Are you actually saying just because they have severe anxiety and have trouble talking to lots of people, that they therefore shouldn't bother going at all?? Because "someone else could have used the spot"? Not everyone handles anxiety the same way, just because you have anxiety and can talk to people but be nervous, doesn't mean that's how everyone is. I would probably be that person that would carry that sign and put it up sometimes when I need a break and can't take all the people talking to me. That being said, that doesn't mean I would deserve to be there any less than you. And I shouldn't let my anxiety get in the way of what I get to do in my art career, just because someone who is more outgoing can take my place.
@KaizenKitty5 жыл бұрын
isn't it kind of ridiculous that a printing company would get more from a print than the artist who created the art they printed? XD I mean a printing company is just the middle man. without the artist creating the image, the print would never exist. all a printing company does is turn on a machine (that does the printing) lol XD there is no machine that can create art! even if people know how much it costs to print stuff, they aren't buying a mass produced product created by the printing company. they're purchasing art from an artist. the artist still has to create the image XD (and that is the work they are paying for LOL)
