The American education system is a joke and sports is more important than grades, getting bullied? Well unless your on a spot team too bad. (Not kidding I actually had someone spray chemicals in my face.) I went to one of those schools where sports control everything, we had broken locker, water fountains, and textbooks that fell apart if you looked at them wrong, yet every year they redid the gym floor and a few years before I left that school they got a new scoreboard. I eventually left after the administration left people get away with death threats and also my heath wasn’t the best (turns out I have a few chronic illnesses) and the school got fed up with me miss days for my illnesses and doctors appointments

Brightstar of FernClan I know a lot of schools NOW barely have sports and you need good grades in order to actually play sports. Like my highschool has no sports and to be in sports you’ll need to do it at your home school.

@@kalebsok2947 My high school had a decent amount of sports and athletics. Football, soccer, rugby, swimming, various forms of track, even a girls' golf team. Football was the big thing though, with soccer coming in at a close second. My school prioritized sports in all announcements and assemblies, plus some people just didn't need to try in classes or would be excused from them because they had practice or a game. I'm not really sure what constitutes "good grades" from your school, but for ours it was "they'll graduate and aren't failing core classes" so there were a lot of literal jock archetypes

I hate schools that are only into their sports and nothing else. My school is sorta in the middle they adore their arts but also care about their sports. There’s murals on my schools walls in the art wing and there’s some art paintings in other halls(they also love promoting the plays that are put on and they have a bunch of other type of art classes, photography, theater etc.). We also of course have a great looking football field and two gyms. Your school sounded like hell and I wish they cared more about creativity and art instead of just sports. Some people aren’t into art and others aren’t into sports, there has to be a middle ground for all those people

My art program is insane compared to other schools, and it isn't even that amazing. We have one teacher for the actual art classes but she is the most wonderful lady I've ever met. She supports "all students' interests" and we can turn in any style we want as long as we follow the techniques in the assignment. There's art survey for the freshmen where we try every medium, and then grades up can take ceramics and painting. It's really a great environment in the art room, every one is super welcoming and she says she wants to treat our art hours as a break. Besides that, my school has band, orchestra, jazz, rovasi, chamber, symphony, and a huge marching band (which I'm a part of, go marching chiefs!). And our metalshop classes are pretty big. Botany, coding, theatre, all those kind of classes are focused on just as much as academics.

So I’m a freshmen this year and I was so excited to take an art class. I’d never done one because I felt that I HAD to do band instead, but going to high school I didn’t have that baggage to carry anymore cause it was a new school. But when I got my schedule, they gave me a random class, as too many people had signed up for art. And I thought,”ok you know what it happens” But what really pissed me off was when I found out that some freshmen had gotten two fine arts classes. Like, if you have an overcrowded class, why wouldn’t you just put the people who have two arts classes into the one that’s not crowded. I mean, you only need 1 art credit where I am. I want to take it next year, but they’re probably not gonna let me because they’re gonna say “you need to do your other credits” Even though they let people do multiple classes that won’t even count towards them graduating. So my goals of getting to AP studio art are never gonna happen.

God this sounds like my school and it pisses me off. Like other things exist except sports! I was a theatre kid and they cut the budget so much for theatre and gave it to sports that one year for a production all the people in it had to use our own money to get props, things for makeup and things for the set. It sucked, but we all loved theatre so we did it.

Honestly can relate with this.... And it's sad. I went to highschool in a small town that had two major schools for secondary level. The one I went to cut funding for so many other departments just so their sports teams and sports trips could take priority. Needless to say, Arts and Media classes I selected as a means to get ready for college didn't have as much attention as they should have. It hurt us for supplies and upkeep. So much so students were paying supply fees for things we really shouldn't have through the semester. So I relate to that struggle and just disconnect of a school not caring about the right things when it comes to their students and faculty.

Ah, My most disappointing and disheartening art class had to have been Art 1. (Buckle up, this is a long one...) At this point, I had taken art all through middle school, so I felt like I had a decent base to work with, and when I learned I had gotten into to Art 1, I was positively thrilled. Now, I had heard from some upperclassmen that this year was a new teacher- should have been a red flag tbh, because I seem to recall hearing they couldn't keep an art teacher for more than a year or 2. But, I was optimistic still, because a new teacher can mean a new way of thinking, and sometimes thats all you need, right? Well, day 1 was nice and easy, She seemed like she had a decent energy level to her and it felt like I might accomplish something. After the first week though, we still hadn't started drawing. We had to do "Art history" first. If I had a dollar for every time I saw "Christina's world" or "The kiss", I'd be able to afford a new Desktop. And the class only got more boring from there. She'd have us take tests on the art history in between the obnoxious and monotone bullshit still life settings she'd make. I know most artists in our style of art don't like still lives to begin with, but by the gods did this woman make me hate them with a passion that burns hotter than hell. I mean great god of thunder there's only so many ways to draw a glass bottle without losing one's mind. And yet it got worse. We had to draw fruit next. But not just forms, oh no. We had to realistically color them, too. With a mish-mosh of pencils that in no way, shape, or form matched her perfect set of prismacolors. So hear she is, coloring in lime greens and yellows and oranges finally down to some reds and light browns to create this immaculate apple-- And here I am, struggling to even find the right colors, let alone remember what order she put them in. By the time mine was done, it looked like a rotted and quite sickly apple you'd never want to touch in real life. Not only was she wanting us to churn out perfect images, she kept the better supplies to herself and let us keep boppin along on the struggle bus trying to make do with broken, cheap pencils that didn't come close to matching. But wait, there's more! What better way to switch from the mundane than to move directly, swiftly, /sharply/, into the Abstract? I found an old art project from this time period and the only thing I can tell you about it was that I had been reading the Fruits basket Manga at the time because of all the tiny references to the characters I found in it. Other than that, I have no fucking clue what the project even was, let alone what it was supposed to be. Oh, and at some point, we played with chalk pastels, because I pulled a piece of paper out of an old binder and it was 18 shades of 'wtf' and horribly dusty. tl;dr-- She was a traditialist artist who was boring and crushed my expectations for the next 3 years of highschool.

Ah yes, the "my way is the Only Right Way" teacher. I feel like everyone who did arts in school got one. Had a teacher whap my hand with a ruler for blending with my fingers to get an effect because it's "not proper". To this day I still finger blend just out of spite. Will say though, at least in my class the teacher wasn't hoarding the good supplies. Mostly because there wasn't enough budget for even the cheap supplies. Most of the kids who were really interested in art ended up bringing in their own just so they could make something that didn't look like a waxy pile of vomit.

Strange hearing what other schools require for graduation, aside from passing your standard classes ours didn't have much in other activities needed beyond 2 years of gym. But if you wanted the advanced diploma, and me being the stupid over achiever/point hoarder I am of course wanted those credits, you had to have 3 years of one language or 2 years of 2 languages.

Not fully related, but I'm having the same issues with my choir class. Majority of people are taking choir because it is required to have at least one year in either a CTAE or Fine Arts class, they are trying to get a chord/pathway, or they don't have any other space in other classes for these seniors who have all their credits. These people mainly didnt want to take the course because they weren't interested and just want to graduate, but its disheartening for me and a few other people in my class that actually want to learn and do the class. None of the students know how to sing other than me and... it's the 3rd month of course and I'm just so ready to drop out. I understand your situation so much so I hope now you are a better person and in a better place without that barrier!

Man that sucks and I hardcore feel for the sports school thing. In my school there's only two art teachers (one for photography and the other for traditional art). They cut fundamentals of art (the intro class that I HAD to take freshmen year if I wanted to do more art classes) and they only have drawing and painting 1 and 2 along with ceramics 1-3 and AP studio art. It's really sucky since the main art teacher really isn't that great for so many reasons; one of which is that she broke this one kid's ceramics pieces at a district art show on accident, but she 1. DIDN'T TELL HIM and 2. THREW IT OUT. I am entirely bitter about her and I refuse to take any more of her classes. Thank christ the new photography teacher is amazing and I have a renewed love for photography.

7:42 yeah I had to do the same thing for my fine arts GCSE class and we called it the grid method. We practically used it for any drawing we did and the class didn’t even teach any proper anatomy as well as perspective or colour theory , so even when I passed with decent grade , my college teachers are having to teach these things to our class when they found out that not even half of the students where taught about these things (tho some didn’t even do a art related class and couldn’t even draw at all but even students with art education or experience didn’t properly know or weren’t taught these things) btw nice vid 😘

That really sucks. At my highschool only 5 students including me took French and no one cared and it was fine but I live in Australia and it's different here I guess. We don't have AP classes or anything like that and our only art classes were visual arts or photography. There is this state wide competition for year 12 (seniors) where your work gets into a gallery if you are chosen and that was cool I guess.

I'm slightly older than you, but I had to deal with the same bullshit when it came to how socal viewed the arts. I wanted to take art and the first art teacher I had I did not like at all. He was an older man, about to retire. He would often just have the assignment written on the board and just work on something personal. Which was fine and all, but when you needed help or he would suggest something he would take what I was working on and draw on it himself. I did not like that. I ended up kind of cruising the class because the assignments didn't really get me to think outside the box. The next year he retired and we got a younger teacher. Just got her degree and eager to teach. I loved her. She was fun, engaging, and was able to get away with showing us movies on fridays because she was able to spin all of them into showing a different aspect of art (Which is true so the school couldn't argue it). However during my senior year I walked into her room during lunch and found her crying. They were letting her go at the end of the year because of budget cuts. Everyone loved her and she had fought to get us more supplies so we could try painting and other medias. Yet they let her go. The only art teacher. And kept the pottery teacher because he had tenure. The school was getting massive renovations at the time too. It's not fair they keep cutting art for the favor of sports, when art and engineering jobs are more in demand in California. Architects, designers, rendering, illustrators, and graphic design is in high demand, but it's super freaking hard to actually get going in the art world. I still haven't been able to get a degree, which most obs require, because I couldn't get the classes that I needed and ended up having to work basic jobs than focus on school. Very few people make it to professional sports, but a lot of people can get into the arts. On a side note one time I was wearing a hoodie and had a bunch of stuff crammed into the pocket at the front and my art teacher (The old man) asked if I was pregnant in front of like 5 other people. I was so embarrassed, afterwards I wondered if he needed new glasses because it was a square pencil case in my pocket along with a couple other things including a sharpener that was shaped like a pokemon.

A similar experience happened to me! My art teacher was the only art teacher in the entire school!! He was also the football coach?? And he had an Art 2 class that needed approval by the teacher to get in. There were people that really wanted to take the class, but he would deny some of them to get in because they weren't "skilled" or "serious" enough about art. The stupid thing is that he would also let his football team attend art 2?? Even though they did not give a shit about doing art, threw art supplies around, and the teacher DREW their assignments for them!! Also budget cuts got rid of Art 3, so I had to take Art 2 again just to fill my future plans in taking Art 3... So I'm also on the same level of a school district favoring sports more than the arts and cutting those classes when budget cuts happen.

Oh god, I'm in high school right now in Drawing 1 and in the first few weeks we were drawing still life, draw random pots from your head, things like that. But after about the second week of school she started making us do that grid drawing of a Picasso painting. Ever since then, we had had to do another grid drawing and are now on our 3rd strip drawing. Which is where you print out a picture and tape it on the top to your paper. Then you cute the picture into thin strips, then you copy the exact picture onto your paper one strip at a time. I hate it. I realize it's to understand values, but I want to get to creating, not copying.

I had something similar with my music class, there was 3 of us who chose to be in that class. The other 10-15 kids were thrown into that class because they didn’t show up on the day we got to pick our classes. My god it was so annoying because me and the other 2 kids who picked the class wanted to actually learn about music and how to read the sheets and stuff. But the other kids were always like ‘No we only want to fuck around and play the instruments and not do anything all class’ it got so bad that my music teacher broke down in class and those kids started laughing at her. My god I left that class the moment I could because it was just impossible to learn in it.

I wish I could have art classes at school. We do have an art subject, three trimesters of it, but it only happens if there's a teacher available. We had a visual arts teacher, a music teacher, and a theater teacher. The visual arts teacher left the school after our very first class with her so we never took it. We had music instead. Then the next year we had theater and then music again because they were the two art teacher available.

My worst art class experience was also AP. All of the traditional AP art classes were in the same class room as well as with beginner art. Guess who got more attention? We basically only did a couple of things and then the rest of the class for THE WHOLE YEAR was just "work on your portfolio for AP" which was 24 peices of art in 2 categories. It was terrible, couldn't get help from teacher much because of beginner art class, AP was quiet but BG was so loud etc. etc. Also the original teacher left because of a different art teacher that I didn't like and majority of us signed up because of the original teacher. So yeah new teacher from different district who knows nothing about ANY of us or how our district worked, teaching two classes at once. I went into AP art expecting to learn something at least but nah I learned nothing and it literally made me hate art lol. I'm still an artist but I don't think the inner hate from that has gone away. There were 17 AP and 20+ BG. Our district said that AP couldn't have a class if there weren't 30 people in the class minimum (yeah my district was literally garbage, 3 kids killed themselves that year). This was the year they built the new school and instead of building a big enough school they built 2 soccer fields, 2 smaller than b4 basketball courts/gyms, a football field THAT THEY DON'T EVEN USE THEY GO TO THE OLD SCHOOL BECAUSE IT'S TOO FUCKING TINY, tennis courts just basically there was so many fields outside that it took up as much space as the school and caused there to not be enougg space for student parking and they gave plant science a green house with no storage and 2x less the size and animal science got nothing. They also cut out all of the cooking classes too. But yeah we had to do 24 art pieces for COLLEGE BOARD THE WORST PROGRAM EVER (aka the SAT test people) and how does collegeboard grade? ON A BELL CURVE BASED ON WHO THEY THINK HAD THE BEST ART WHICH THERE WERE PEOPLE WITH RENAISSANCE FUCKING PAINTINGS. So yeah even though I tried my hardest I got my whole portfolio graded at 2 out of 5 which means if I wanted to get into an art school I'd be denied. They basically said that to them my art was below average since I can't do renaissance paintings. OH and my angriest moment, ohhhh boy, I was in AP drawing and I showed the teacher my focus idea (12 were called your focus or whatever, based on one theme) and she said it was TOO DESIGNY AND DIDN'T TELL ME TO SWITCH TO AP DESIGN WHICH WAS IN THE SAME CLASS AND SHE TOLD OTHER PEOPLE TO DO. She clearly saw that I COULDN'T DO REALISM which is ALL COLLEGEBOARD FUCKING CARES ABOUT if you're in AP drawing but NEVER EVER told me hey you should be in design. Guess what? That also caused me to get a 2 because my shit was too designy and NOT REALISTIC ENOUGH. Just ugh, ugh, that teacher had a weird ass focus on me but never guided me in the direction I should have been in. I realized past the point of when I could that I should have been in design. Just ugh, also I had to trash my whole entire concept that I worked on all summer and pull something out of my ass which also didn't help. Jesus, I'm sorry for ranting but I'm still extremely bitter.

Yeah! I feel really skeptical/jealous hearing about special classes like that too. Or the fact that high schools on tv tend to have pools - that's wild. My highschool had one art teacher and she taught the same exact curriculum every year. I still took it every year, though that is the ONE thing I'd be willing to do over - now that I have money for supplies and a better appreciation for the "boring" sketch activities. We didn't have sketchbooks at all, for example. All loose printer paper and HB pencils. And yeah, it was a stuffed class (30+ kids), almost none of which wanted to be there. There are obvious problems with that: 1) the teacher is always stressed, preachy and overbearing 2) it incorrectly makes you think you have some kind of skill, comparatively, which makes transitioning to an actual school really demoralizing. On the other hand, there were sports teams of some kind, but I went completely unaware of them. So there wasn't any of that cliquey worthiness issues which is nice. TBH the feeling at that school was more along the lines of "You students are distracted by hormones & child poverty - the best you can do is aim for a C grade and take a mechanics course so you don't graduate homeless or in a gang" kind of mentality. I liked how everyone just kept to themselves and slept through it.

My highschool had one art class with one teacher (shout out to him he was fucking bomb and let me sleep in his classroom or hang out when I was having mad anxiety episodes) but a part of even being in art class was an honour system that each student who could would bring in $20 to fund your class for the semester since all of our schools money went to the band and sports. This man then with the money donated by students payed out of pocket to get us supplies and things needed for the class. But aside from shitty budget stuff I feel like I was lucky to have a super cool highschool art class experience. A lot of our assignments were free for all or being challanged to work with new mediums. Teacher was cool with me submitting digital works in some cases as well.

Neither of my high schools were uber sport oriented, the first had a brand new principle who was somewhat full of herself from the newfound power and the other one only had one sport, ultimate frisbee. I'm gonna try to eventually be able to attend a local college that is entirely video game oriented and run by people still in the industry so I can learn animation or 3D modeling and follow that dream, and I'll be so damn thankful that I learned of their tiny existence and get to go!

My school was sorta similar too, all the art classrooms connected, only 3 teachers (technically only 2 of them since the 3rd was actually a normal teacher and had no idea how to make art, but she taught the bullshitters/1st years and didn't have straight up porn in her reference pics like per predecessor did, so it's okay) and my 4th year ceramics class was smushed together with the 3rd year ceramics class. The 2 main art teachers did offer AP art classes, and we were told to specifically tell our councilors that we wanted to take that class instead of/along with the normal ceramics 4 class since all of the councilors had been emailed about it. My councilor however, told me that there was never an email about it and wouldn't let me take it. I told my ceramics teacher about this, she called up my councilor, who straight up lied about me wanting to take AP ceramics 4... even though I was the first student excited to take it and told my teacher about the issue in the first place. I'm not even surprised, my councilor is that person that "pretends" to care when during my entire four years of working my ass off, she was screaming in my face that I'd never graduate or get into college because my grades always sucked ass. Should mention that even though I practically had straight 50s in some classes, and that I know for a fact that absolutely NOBODY passed the required Government class (aka fake news the class, thanks to one the one guy who taught it changed his information CONSTANTLY) I graduated. Everyone graduated. Why? Because my school thinks it's better to have a 100% graduation rate, instead of getting teachers that actually know how to teach if the class isn't IB or AP. Seriously, out of all my teachers I think only 4 of them knew how to teach, were qualified, and cared. One of them a math teacher I had two years in a row (who possibly had the hardest job in the school), then the other 2 were art teachers, one replaced the other after she went on maternity leave, then the concert band teacher who I only had for the concert seasons. (the marching season teacher is a piece of shit who got me kicked out from the class completely my senior year, before the school year even started)

This reminds me of my school. The art teachers were buying supplies out of pocket because "there was no budget", but *some fucking how* the upper year sports teams got brand new custom jerseys every fuckin' year. There was never enough budget to make sure I had the resources and aide I was meant to have either. I was meant to get one for two periods a day. I got maybe an hour, if you include my study hall where an aide was present to help all 25 of us. Mum kicked up a fuss when she found out, and the prinipal, fuckin bitch she was, threatened to take away my IEP funding entirely. Then tried to act all friendly to my face and pretend nothing was wrong. The real kicker? The aide I had, the one who was there from day one of high school, helping me? The one that became like family? They canned her while I was away for surgery, and wouldn't even let her stay long enough to say goodbye when I got back. The resource teacher had to tell me, and ended up spending the period holding me while I bawled my eyes out. No budget for her, but they bought all new athletic supplies right after my year graduated, then hired more people. No fucking budget my ass. God, it makes me want to go into education just so I can be the kind of educator that I wished there was back then.

I would've separated the class since they didn't want to be there anyway. Like give the kids different assignments and spots on the wall. My AP class was like that, we were lumped in with non-AP kids and we just did our own thing while the other students worked on something else. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, that sounds frustrating.

I remember when I was in high school we only had one art class and one art teacher. The art teacher didn’t really give a shit about what you drew and a lot of people who were taking the class didn’t give a shit about art. It wasn’t until I won the digital art competition in our county that we finally got a digital art class. But even then they gave it to a teacher that didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about. Everything I know and the techniques I do with art is because I taught it to myself in my free time. My school didn’t give a shit about art. It took a them THREE YEARS just to consider giving me the art class I had been begging to take. They didn’t think I could have a serious career in art and would consistently put me in agriculture science classes because of their way of thinking. Now I’m in college and I’m so fucking happy because they actually support me and don’t act like I’m an insane person because I want to draw cartoons for a living. It just pisses me off so much that this is the mentality of so many schools and so many people.

I go to a concurrent enrollment high school but the K-12 school district my high school is under requires 2 years of a foreign language (my high school requires 3) and 2 years of fine arts (which we cover with 2 semesters of acting, theater history, or stage work classes. Art classes are considered electives.) So yeah not much has really changed except there is no “one or the other” in terms of languages and arts.

This story pisses me off to no end. I'm in highschool right now, and the art department is so poorly funded. Like you I believe we only have like 3 art teachers, maybe 2. Meanwhile the sports kids slam lunches out of hungry kids hands like a highschool drama movie by Stephen king and are rewarded with a scoreboard so big and so techy we held ssb tournaments on it. And you could see who's winning from a block away. Its absolutely bonkers. And because art is an easy A I cant even get into it unless I reserve a spot for myself in advance. I'm just really pissed lmao

yo man, i getchya. Im from a small town of maybe 3,000 on a good day in one of the poorest counties in america. theres one high school here and i took a business 2 math class my senior year but the thing is, the teacher that does the busmat2 class does also all the yearbook classes, graphics design classes and art classes. because the art teacher quit the year before. so instead of doing business math that year i ended up in the class that had all four classes combined and got conned into doing yearbook shit. worst of all, my grade doesn't have a yearbook because no one else in the class contributed and i was fucked over with the rest of what they didnt do. all i wanted to do was business math. rip.

Oh wow- for it must be a foreign language, it cannot be theater, 2 years. And you only needed half a year of the fine arts and half a year of technical skills or something along those lines. Oh yeah, regarding your AP specific story. That sorta happened with both my AP Music Theory class and my Drawing II class. It sorta sucked but at least they didn’t say “all students have to pass or we cut your class” and it was less worse since they combined classes that were advanced and pre-req. the only thing that sorta sucked was the teacher couldn’t give us the time we needed to help us prepare for the AP exam for AP music theory.

My school wasn't as bad I don't think, although they did still have a heavy focus on sports (we'd always, ALWAYS hear about the next football game and have annoying pep rallies on the shiny gym floor and all that garbage). I took Stagecraft as my elective alongside Art, since it was the only other elective that interested me. We were shoved in a separate building from the school that served as the auditorium, Stagecraft class, and Choir class. We'd have no choice but to listen to the choir kids practicing every day, we repainted old flats white to reuse them (who knows how many coats those things have been through honestly), and we got all our props from Goodwill. I wanna say the teacher (who was a phenomenal teacher and the only one that I miss from any school ever tbh) paid for practically everything out of pocket, potentially including the (expensive) royalties for plays.

In my previous school (our equivalent of middle school), teachers pulled us out of the classes after every dumb sports event. We just had to stand there, cluterred as they announced that somebody won something somewhere. Who gives a shit? We also had about 3-5 hours of PE class a week and only 1 hour of IT (2 in the first year). WE WERE IN THE FUCKING IT CLASS. I absolutely hate the fact that every fucking school focuses on sports. The worst part is that I always get extremely tired and barely breathe. People say that I need to train more, but that never worked. Even worse, my genetics are absolute garbage so I have constant anemia ans running around, swinging my arms like a complete idiot is worse than getting beaten with a modarely thick stick. I managed to get myself out of that hell at least for this year (I lied to my psychologist) and I should be fine now. Maybe I'd be fine with it if it was fun. I'm in the school, not the military. They need to recognize that playing different games, jumping on a trampoline or even running around on playground is healthy too. It would also be cool if I could choose whatI want to do. I'm pretty pathetic and feel like I need some muscle mass, but can't do anything because i have no money for the gym and the schools have dumbells and most of the stuff I'd need, but somehow, we're only allowed to touch it like once a year for 15 minutes.

Now I love sports and art equally. They’re two of my core 4 favorite things in my life. But it’s very disappointing how the American education system values arts so little. I’m very lucky that my school sorta values art. They’re willing to build a new dark room for Film Photography. But it’s still such a sports heavy school, and the sports community is very toxic too. I’ll put it this way, my friend is very good at basket ball, enough where he should make the team; but his name isn’t “known” by people in the community, and the coach brought on people who were worse than him just because of that. As a result our JV basketball team sucks, there are no morals. He is damn well good enough to be on the team, but it’s not his choice, so he was cut and it really disappointed him. It’s no different in every other aspect of my school, even arts; if your last name is “known” all of a sudden people like you more. This is kinda going on a tangent but, the things schools, especially highschools, values are usually so exclusive and unfair it just isn’t right. Whether it’s sports or your fricken last name, it seems there’s always something that’s ruling the school. I forgot to add: funding for certain sports are cut in favor for others. Art wise; many of the supplies come out of the teachers own pocket. As far as I know my photo teacher is buying all the film and develop herself. I never once heard her say “they supplied us”, it’s always “I got” or “I bought this new develop (or something) so let’s see if it works”. The arts program I’m pretty sure is filled with half of it being school supplies. They never suffice. I honestly think the only reason they fund an arts program at all is because it’s one of the requirements to get the basic diploma. As you only need one credit, none of your other art credits are technically counted. And unless you go to art school those credits basically go down the drain because most other schools don’t give a damn. That’s a shame.

We don't even have any language options for classes, it's just French and English. It really sucks for everyone who's fluent in both because you're forced to take English regardless of being bilingual instead of learning a new language in A PLACE MADE FOR LEARNING. :/ We also only have a very basic Art class, no option for different types or anything. At least the teacher makes us do different formats of art so there's always that. P.S. I'd like to add our system is literal bullshit. You get detentions for the smallest of shit, but a kid is getting bullied? Not their problem! A locker wasn't locked because every lockpad is cheap and broken so we literally cannot lock them? Nah-ah, can't have that. Schools nowadays are so badly handled, it's fucking insane. It's all about a shitty number on a paper for your entire future, you don't even have to remember anything they "taught" you after the exam because then you just have to remember more bullshit for the next test. At this point, we might as well get rid of Middle and High School seeing how they deal more harm than good to kids.

Music, visual arts, sculpture, culinary, aaanny art class had either A) a shit teacher that didn't care bout teaching and were just bad and lazy or B) they were a teacher that didn't teach arts and knew more about the periodic table than to tell apart a clarinet reed to a sax reed. Im so glad my school step its game up just a bit and got slightly better teachers than last year but god damn. My school would still rather paint the walls a different shade of green than- yah know ACTUALLY USE THEIR BUDGET WITH LOGIC (and they actually did that...they spent all their money painted walls. I agree that the situation was really fucked up. I'm a student artist and have experienced losing classes to "budget cuts" But the things you were complaining about (lack of effort among some kids) is literally a problem in every class. At least you didnt have to do group projects with them. Like, try going to a public school in a city where 90% of the kids dont care about school work and youre expected to do group projects on a regular basis with them. I'm sure that part of why the kids who were forced into the class didn't try was because they didnt want to feel inferior to all of the good art students. It's just as hard to have to be the blue square painting as it is to be the flower painting (emotionally, not effort-wise). And to say that someone's work looks like something a kindergartner painted is kinda rude.
