Good luck Shaun. I’ve been following your journey for the past several years. I’m an anesthesiologist, with retirement in my view for next year. I vividly remember my first day of residency at LA County - USC in July 1988. I was scared AF, and to top it off I was on call that first day. I can look,back now and wonder how I got through those first few weeks. But miraculously, after a few weeks I was juggling a full service of patients and getting the work done. Hang in there. You’ll be fine. And you’ve picked the best specialty.

I'm an MS4 starting the application process and watching your videos are really motivating! Shaun, now your real world education starts. Let me offer this. 80 hour weeks can quickly become 100 hours per week. You must take care of yourself. I would encourage you to start to see a counselor regularly - just for personal growth. What you see and do every day can cause PTSD… docs/nurses, much like cops, they just learn to live and tolerate it. That doesn’t work… set a routine of personal growth… it will make you a better doc, and prevent burnout. Thanks for answering the call…

Crazy how time flies!! :) Chewy is Yorkie/Poodle and Chip is Yorkie/Cocker Spaniel! I highly recommend getting your dashund a friend. I think all dogs should have a buddy!

It’s normal since we need to go see our patients before the attending. Plus surgeries start early so you need to round on all your current patients beforehand
