A German friend told me they simply use transmission fluid mixed with tectyl , His explanation was that the trans fluid climbs into all the nooks and carries the tectyl with it and over time the trans fluid dries out leaving the tectyl forming a fatty layer sealing and protecting the hidden unpainted metal in the seams.

suggestion future flat bed build/fix: Make the plate steel removable from the bed frame. That way you have access to all edges. You could weld eyelets to the plate steel similar to a shock hoop/eyelet, then bolt it to the frame.

Austin, Thanks for your honesty! love that you showed your slight mistake so if we decided to build something similar maybe we wont make the same mistake!!! Even more respect for you and your channel! In the drain holes you might want to do that spray oil stuff for the inside to prevent rusting from the inside out.

The O2 in water, H20, is a source of all the 02 rust needs. So metal and moisture is all that is needed (there is more oxygen in water than in the air) for rust to go merrily on its voracious way. Designing spacers between your framing members and the skin so that it can be rinsed (dirt holds moisture) as well as painted initially is a good remedy. Remember OEM cars with seam sealer rust in those joints. In humid weather rust converters tend to stay damp for many days and then eat their way out from under your new paint. Some sort of artificial heat is needed to dry it thoroughly. There are paint systems like inorganic zinc (the key is the word systems-you have to use compatible components from whichever manufacturer you choose) that will form an ionic bond which actually travels to protect adjacent metal. Drawback is you need a type III sandblasted finish before commencing the painting. And you need to paint it right after it is sandblasted (leaving it even overnight will degrade the system. You do not want even flash rusting which happens immediately on bare metal.). So the application is expensive but it can work wonders as I have seen on large ships and it lasts for ten years or more in a highly corrosive environment. Semis with chains on them tear up a car deck and their is standing salt water on that bare metal which rusts immediately of course but by the next day it is completely 'healed' over. The process is called ionic transfer and can protect metal several inches away as long as the main coating has maintained is mill thickness. A less intensive method is to use Coal Tar Epoxy but it is nowhere near as effective and lacks the ionic bond as it is only a mechanical one. Washing the underside frequently to remove salt and dirt that holds moisture is helpful as well.

Have the flatbed hot dip galvanized. They’ll acid dip it to remove any corrosion and the galvanizing will seal it all up. If they do a good job you could drag it down the road all the way home and it would be fine.

First, i would like to thank you for sharing your project with KZbin, your videos very informational and actually fun to watch. You have an awesome project going on there. I am actually about too embark on my first vehicular fabrication project myself. I'm putting a custom fabricated flatbed on a 1992 ford ranger 4 wheel drive. I am an iron worker by day, so structural steel but i started welding misc. metals like handrails, stairs, trellis's ECT...j I agree with you the weld through primer is a joke, But what you can do is use cold galvanizing compound (Post Weld) before you use your paint, it comes in a rattle can just like spray-paint and honestly Rustoleum is the best brand to use for this. However it is specifically designed for preventing rust by sealing metals that are for exterior use. It is an ugly gray color so you definitely want to paint it after but it bonds great to metal and it will last a life time. Also if you use 2k glamor clear coat after your paint, (using an acrylic automotive paint for best results) it has a hardener that you release into the can before spraying. it will leave a glossed hardened coat over the top. this stuff is meant to be put on fabrication machines, a mill bandsaw iron worker large press brakes ECT... it can really take a beating!!!! Either way it would be more for your next project, it appears you already did a great job with this one. Best regards,

When I put my cab together first thin I did was wash the the entire cab top and bottom. I did this with it on the ground on 4x4’s with the nose of the cab pointing to the sky. Once it was dry I just hit the bottom of the cab (still on the4x4’s) with vehicle undercoating. Every surface, nook and crannies got sprayed with two thick coats. Finishing the job of with a coat of paint. Did this same process with the bed and the finished frame. I used an oil spray for inside of the frame, Toyota’s seem to need extra care in this particular area. Almost six years down the line and not one spot of rust, and after every trail ride mud just falls off with ease using a garden hose. Cool part is most of it falls off on the ride home, and yes my rig is a daily driver.

As someone who grew up living in Minnesota and dealing with rust from mile 0, I have learned to make my projects out of open channel or materials that are not enclosed. Instead of that square tubing I would have used medium duty angle iron, light C-channel, or fully enclose the tube with no open holes. Drainage and water runoff is key to anti-rust.

Probably too late by the time of this filming, but fluidfilm will penetrate the cracks and do what you want. Boeshield is good too, penetrates then forms a wax layer. The rest of the bed should hold up fine since it was properly done with POR. I sprayed my truck with the turtlewax hybrid ceramic spray all over the body, and water/dirt just sheds right off. You might consider doing that too, so you can just spray off contaminants throughout the season. Let the paint cure and then put some sort of hydrophobic treatment on there and you’re golden.

best way to prevent the rust: have the weldment hod-dip galvanized after welding it and checking the fit. Leave holes in any tubes/closed geometry for the galvanizing dip to get in/out. Paint afterwards. Hands-down the best way for preventing rust on mild steel. Just don't weld on it again afterwards... Will be relatively expensive but it looks like you're used to spending some coin on building superior gear...

after 30 years of fighting this ..the only thing I found that works is plane old grease.. after your dried finish coat. Apply with a paint brush on the whole underside, and all the cracks/spaces fill with your grease gun. Kinda like applying caulk in the bathroom. Any places your not sure fill it with fluid film. You'll have to touch up over the wheels a few times, After a couple years I power wash it off and redo it but a little lights coat. You won't believe how well the steel beads off the water. It doesn't look real good, But it works and works well.......

I see this is a year old. I understand that. On the steel ships we use OSPHO. Phosphoric acid that treats rust (oxide) and forms it into a treated metal (can't remember what) but alters the steel. It might not stop rust forever but would slow it to 7-10 year rust issues. Also built a flat bed with the same issues. And just OSPHO everything to slow/stop the process. Air and oxygen always win long term.
